Is windbindd necessary?
Is it necessary? I am also confused as to what it does. If I disable it in the smb.conf file, I can not say I see any difference. I am running 6 XP pro clients, MDK 9.2 as the file server. Windows XP Pro and Samba (file saving)
Sometimes when I save a file to a samba-shared drive the application is unable to save there and asks if the file is write protected or if the disk is full. If I then save it to a local drive and copy it there using Windows Explorer, it can overwrite the file fine. Do I need to make that myriad of changes to my XP Pro registry? Most of the time it works fine, just from time to time it will give

XP needs to rejoin after ldap problem
Hi Everybody, Here in my company we have migrated from nt4 to Debian Sarge with Samba 3.0.14a + OpenLdap 2.2.23 + db4. Well, it's working fine except for one problem. When I have to get back to a backup copy on my ldap slaves on my BDCs some, or sometimes all, Windows XP machines need to be rejoined to the domain. I manage a workaround stopping Samba every time I need to reset the ldap

MAJOR XP profile issue - mandrake rpms - 2.2.7a
problem: migrating from one server to another . . .physical and software migration. copied all profiles and am in the process of adding a new automated system for domain management (mysql backend, blah balh) so the uid's changed for each user. this is what how i THOUGHT things would work: 1. everyone logs out 2. shutdown samba on old server 3. add new users to new server 4. transfer ALL

Xp PCs intermittently requiring rejoin to domain
Hi guys and girls, I'm running Samba-3.0.4 as a PDC for about 40 workstations. It's been running perfectly for about 6 months. Suddenly in the last week two PCs have required that they be 'rejoined' to the domain. This seems to be happening every couple days or so. I've looked through the logs but can't find any clues about missing computer accounts etc. Any ideas why ?

Remove machine account
Hallo! How please to remove a win2k machine account. I tried smbpasswd -x machine$ without succes. The thing is that I changed the machine domaine to workgroup. And now I'm trying to put again the machine in the domaine but that can't be done. I'm getting an error message that the logon informations are in conflict with existing logon informations. Thank a lot for helping

New samba server
I did not get this finished last summer, so decided to just wait and do it this summer. I have setup my new samba server and was trying to get some things tweaked to the way that I want them. I thought that I had asked this before and that I could do it, but it seems that it does not work. My new server is running as a domain server just like the old. It has the same domain name and I change

server change
Hi, Recently we changed our samba server to a bigger and more powerful system ( centos 5.2 ) The config file and smbpasswd and other passwd and group files were copied to the new server and it then assumed the same identity as the old one in the dns and ip address. It seems to have gone very well except we now seem to have a problem. There are windows XP workstations that were domain joined to the

Unable to browse workgroup, shares otherwise accessible
Hi, After upgrading from Mandrake Linux 9.2 to Mandrake Linux 10 I can no longer browse my workgroup domain in "My Network Places" from my XP Pro clients. However, I can still access the shares on my Samba server without problem using either "Add Network Place" or by entering the path directly in Explorer. Another symptom is found in my Samba log where a lot of the

net rpc vampire - cannot login to migrated computer accounts
Hello experts, I've migrated our NT4 domain to sambe 3.0.20b/ldap backend with "net rpc vampire", and nearly everything works as expected. But one big problem remains: it's not possible to login to the domains member maschines now, because "the domain is not available at the moment" (translated from german). After the maschine rejoined the samba domain, login

Where do SIDs come from?
Hello, I've got a potentially major problem: I've recently changed from samba-TNG (vintage last February) which was working tolerably well in our environment barring a few locking problems and the ever increasing tdb files and memory footprint. As our number of clients has passed 150, the amount of memory used on our Solaris server became unsustainable and I took the decision to migrate

change local & domain sids and implications
hi everybody I'm thinking I'll grab whole lot of my ldap backend and change SID - what will this cause to workstation/machine members? I'm guessing users account should be fine and people would be able to log in but machine would probably have to rejoin (if I can call it that, because domain name is different). You probably already see what I'm hoping I can do - I hope I can

Windows clients losing connection to Samba 3.0.27 PDC on FC7 i386
Hello all... I have a site of about 50 pcs connected to a Samba domain controller. The domain has been running flawlessly for several years through several upgrades, and the last one (From Fedora Core 4/ Samba 3.0.23a to FC7/ Samba 3.0.27) seems to have caused something to come unglued. The Workstations are periodically booting up in the morning and being unable to contact the domain controller.

Profiles XP and Service Pack 1
Hi List, we have a 130+ PC network running windows XP on the clients, with win2000 and samba servers (SuSE 7.3 distribution rpm for samba 2.2.3 and SuSE 8.0 selfcompiled samba 2.2.5). The windows servers just authenticate the users, and provide some additional services (Terminal Server and some special software packages). Print- and File- services are provided by the samba servers. We

Rejoining an XP workstation to a domain
Hello, I have been trying to rejoin a computer to a newly remade PDC on the same domain name using Samba 2.2.7 on RedHat 9. I get this error message everytime I try: Title: "Computer Name Changes" "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "Quasar": Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are

Joining domain XP
Have set up machine accounts as recommended in your docs, using root as authority to change to domain but half of the XP clients complain 'specified user does not exist'. This problem is not consistent and has occurred seemingly at random with a test XP pro workstation on continually attempting to leave & then rejoin the domain - any ideas out there? Please reply to

XP woes
Working with Windows XP and debian Samba 2.2.3a on a box as my PDC. Sign or seal patch was applied. The past few days when we have been adding new computers running windows XP to the domain we have had machines tell us they have joined the domain, but when we try to log onto them using a "domain" account we get the following error on the PC: "The system could not log you on to

recreating domain with existing gid and uid
Okay, I gave up fixing that raspberry and going to use some conventional legacy PC instead and reinstall it all. Is there a way I can use the group, user and domain controller IDs from the backups I created to reinstall a new Samba4 DC without the clients noticing? I don't like to rejoin everything yet another time. - Axel
