What's Happening
Found these messages in /var/log/dmesg on a Redhat 7.1 machine running
Samba 2.2.2 accessing a Win 2000 share. Actually, there are a bunch of
tasks accessing the same share, complete with file locking, etc.
Any docs on what that error code means?

win 2k3 / XP Pro to Samba 3.0.1 open failed, result=-512
I'm having some confusing problems transferring approximately 16GB, in
about 541,000 individual files.
What is happening is that I am starting with a blank destination
directory on a gentoo system running samba 3.0.1, and pulling from one
of two windows systems. The problems come in that each time I use rsync
(version 2.5.7) over samba to keep the data on the gentoo system's side
in sync

error -13 with smbopen
Using linux on both server and client.
I can run smbmount and all seems ok. But, when I try to use kfm to browse a
share, I get the following messages thousands of times in /var/log/messages
and things more or less hang up. I have to telinit 1 to get control of my
client machine.

Filesystem Locking or lack of locking issues
Good Day,
I'm running into some issues and wondered if there are a few of you that can
assist. Or please let me know if this is better off in a Java forum (but
figure the Samba crew knows a bit more about filesystems then the java team
:)

smbfs failure mounting DAVE Macintosh share
Hi,
I tried to make my Linux box smbmount a remote share originating from a
Macintosh running the commercial package DAVE 2.5. The Linux box is a RedHat 6.0
with a 2.2.14 kernel (with smbfs inserted as a module) and samba-2.0.3; the iMac
ran MacOS9.
The directory to be shared, \\akemi\archivio, contained two files, aaa and bbb.
Here's what happened:

Character translation problem
Hi all,
I have a file that samba does not know how to access. The file is located on
a w2k server. The samba box is a member of the w2k domain (ADS). When I try
to access the file via nfs I get "no such file or directory". In the logs
I get the following error:

Samba 2.2.4 - files have disappeared!
Hello all. I have two linux machines, Red Hat 7.1 with kernel 2.4.9-34
(Red Hat stock), with Samba 2.2.4 installed. Both of these machines usa
Samba to mount several shares from a common Windows 2000 server.
These machines also run Courier IMAP. For those not familiar with email
systems, Courier uses the "Maildir" method of email storage and
retrieval; each message is stored as a

Samba as a client to Windows2000 + special characters on filenames
Greetings!
I have been troubleshooting this for over a week, and what follows is a rather
long, detailed description. The short description to the problem I have been
dealing with is: I can't access files on a windows2000 server from a Linux
client when their filenames have some specific special characters such as "?" I
can list them, but not copy.
The setup:

2.4.24 I/O error breakage
Twice in the past week (when things have previously been fine for a
year), a server has locked up spewing forth a continuous stream of
ext3 write errors. This is to a bog-standard IDE disk, only thing
on the controller, etc.
Nothing EVER hits the logs. Not a single error. Every process that
accesses the disk seems to fail. It looks like ext3 is failing every
I/O request.
If the machine is

Is there another way of doing the bindings so that the Windows share doesn't run on TCP/IP but will still work with SAMBA? If so, where in the docs should I be looking, and if not - maybe this should be something discussed by the SAMBA dev people..
Regards,
Marc.

Linux SMB Mount utils patch
Hi,
I'm sure that you are all aware that the mount utilities that ship
with samba are designed to compile and run only with Linux 2.1 series
development kernels.
I'll _try_ keep this short and sweet while doing my best to
explain what I have done, since I have a tendancy to ramble on. I
have two boxes, one Linux with libc5, and another with Linux and Glibc2
(aka libc6). The Samba

Implementation of W2K Group Policies from a Linux Server
I am an evil M$ MCSE :), who of late is planning on opening his
own business... Due to the large cost involved with setting up
Win2K server, both Hardware and OS, we are considering a Linux
server setup. We have SOME experience with Linux, but were after
information specifically on the possible implementation of Win2K

Changes to user passwords are captured by a special DLL, which traps and
then stores the password changes in encrypted form in a private area.
On each synchronization schedule, the synchronization service first examines
the SAM file for changes, and then checks this private area for passwords
