Poor performance getting lots of small files with WinXP/Win2k vs OS2
Hi, We're doing some of performance tests with Linux Samba v3. We're comparing WinXP/Win2k clients vs OS2 clients accessing a samba server. For one test, we're coping 10.000 small files. Let's say, we run the command copy \\sambaserver\10000files\*.* c:\data\10000files With an OS2 client it takes 23 seconds to complete. With an Windows client it takes 460 seconds to complete.

share write access
Hi, I am testing share parameters, and have the following share definition: ## Section - [shareA] [shareA] path = /tmp/shareA writelist = user1 and do not understand why user1 cannot write files in the share when connected as user1. Unix permissions for the share files are rw for everyone, and the share directory has wide-open permissions. Samba version is 3.0.20b-3.4-SUSE.

Long Delays Displaying Small Folders in Windows Explorer (samba-3.0.10-1 FC2)
Hi, I'm trying to replace a windows fileserver server with a Fedora Core 2 samba server in our Windows 2000 ADS domain. A performance problem occurs when accessing certain samba shares from Windows Explorer on either an Windows XP or a W2K client machine. It can take up to a minute for explorer to list files in a share folder containing only a few files! It eventually does, but but reports

smb service response times + OpenVPN
Recently I had the chance to look at smb service response times over OpenVPN using Wireshark/TShark. Here are 2 samples. In both samples a Win XP Pro machine is connecting to a server running samba-3.3.7 and openvpn-2.0.6_9 on FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE. 3.0.7 - NT Create AndX Response, Error:, QUERY_PATH_INFO, Error:
<earlier, David Rankin wrote to no avail:> Mates, I have been watching a developing problem over the past few weeks. Most likely a M$ patch to XP that has caused problems. What happens is that XP clients try to open the standard "File" -> "Open" dialog (like in word, or whatever) and the file open dialog hangs and stops responding for 15 seconds or so. I have

Poor performance when accessing Linux from Windows XP because of too many QUERY_FILE_INFO requests
Dear all, My question is described as follows. Server: Linux Samba-3.3.1 Client: Windows XP with SP3 Step1: connect to the samba server. Step2: select a directory name ?test?. (The directory is created before testing.) The client will send a lot of QUERY_FILE_INFO requests. According to data captured by Wireshark, I find the following phenomenon: The client repeats exactly the same

samba 4.7.7 shares on FreeBSD 11.1-p11 started to ignore ACL
Hi, This morning three of our FreeBSD-11.1-p11 servers with Samba 4.7.7 installations started to ignore ACL settings and reject user access to shares.  All three servers are members of DC running on Windows Server 2008R2.  Everything has been running ok for last few year.  I have been upgrading Samba and FreeBSD installations and on last Friday upgraded to the latest packages from

When opening a file it takes up to half a minute!
Greetings, in our small network with about 10 Clients I got a problem when opening files or directories. If there were no actions between server and client for about 2 minutes or more, the very first action (open file, change path, etc) needs a long long time. The problem occurs on some clients (win 2k/xp), but not on every client. I tried a working smb configuration from home, but still no

Saving files with MS Word to samba3 server is very slow!
Hi! I'm currently hunting a strange problem and looking for help! I have a samba3 fileserver (currently samba-3.0.20b, but problem can be reproduced with samba-3.0.7, but _not_ with samba2 like 2.2.8a), and I see performance problems when writing files with MS word 2002 SP3 from a NT4.0 (SP6a) workstation. Saving even the smallest file takes more than 10 seconds! Copying files with Windows

samba errors: (87) The parameter is incorrect. (1326) Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I get these repeated errors from my windows server but cannot understand why. I am running samba on fedora 4 boxes and my servers run on windows 2000. Whenever someone attempts to manually access a shared volume on a linux box and use the right credentials we never experience the 1326 error. I included the samba config file below and more details of both errors from event viewer. Does anyone have

Launching workstation local applications creates SMB traffic and STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE errors
Launching workstation local applications creates SMB traffic and STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE errors I am using Samba 2.2.12 as a domain controller without any use of roaming profiles. Everything is working fine, but I have noticed some strange behavior. I've been working on a problem for quite some time. No matter what local application I launch on a workstation, I will see the following server

Unable to follow dfs referral - still a problem for smbclient & also freebsd smbfs
Hi, Does anyone know if there has been any more progress on the problem of browsing 'complex dfs roots' see http://lists.samba.org/archive/smb-clients/2006-February/000622.html Basically it occurs whenever you have a Microsoft Distributed File System Tree where the links are to subfolders of the destination share. Microsoft clients have no trouble browsing such trees. The Samba HOWTO
