Does smbmount support timeout equivalent to nfs "soft" mount ?
Dear all,
I'm having a problem with smbmount and could you please kindly help ?
I'm desperately searching a smbmount config equivalent to NFS "soft" mount option, but I cannot find any.
I'll smbmount a Windows share as smbfs on a Linux box. I hope remote file access requests sent from smb client can timeout if CIFS server is down. i.e. I don't want the r/w file

Trouble with smbmount [Linux 2.0.33/Redhat 5.0]
Hello fellow Samba users,
I have a problem setting permissions using smbmount on my Linux /GNU computer
I have read/write access rights on NT Server computers, and on a Solaris
2.5
machine, running Samba. My Linux computer has Redhat 5.0, and runs kernel
revision 2.0.33. SMBFS support is installed as a loadable kernel module.
The smbfs client software is version 2.0.1, and was installed with

smbmount hangs Linux if Windows server goes down
Hello.
My linux box mounts a Windows filesystem as an smbfs entry in /etc/fstab. I
found that, if the hosting Windows box goes down for some reason (Imagine
that!), any process on the Linux box that was accessing it hangs forever in
state D and cannot be killed.
How can I configure smbmount so that it will timeout and return errors rather
than hang forever? I have scoured the web for

Setting the timeout of smbmount
Hi!
How do i set how long smbmount should attempt to connect a share before
timing out?
I have a couple of shares set for automatic mounting (in fstab). Problem
is: if i move my computer to another network, were these shares aren't
available, my init scripts are delayed for several minuits while
smbmount (ordered by the "mount -a" command in the init scripts)
attempts to connect

Large Directories Timeout smbfs & Windows
All,
This is my first posting to any of the Samba mailing lists.
I've been a lurker for a year or so as I've been working on
a VFS for the company I'm working for.
We're currently using Samba 3.0.10-4 on RedHat AS 3 Update 4
and we are observing the following problem both with our VFS
and with shares residing in a Linux directory on the Samba
server.
If a directory has lots of

smbfs patch for 2.6 [PATCH]
First I will apologize for posting my patch here if this is not the correct
place to post a patch.
I know that smbfs is being removed, but we still use it and need it to work.
We have a patch to contribute back to the smbfs in the 2.6 kernel. I have
noticed multiply posts on this issue and we have basically patch the smbiod.c
to fix the reconnect bug in 2.6
Something we did for our patch is

Q. Minimal smbfs installation
Hi
I am trying to create a boot diskette(s) that is able to mount a remote
drive (on an NT server) using smbfs.
I have tried doing this, but I can't fit smbd, nmbd, smbmount and smbumount
all onto my root disk.
What is the minimum set of files required for smbfs to work?
What docs should I read to help me?
I am running RedHat 6.2 (with a custom kernel v 2.2.14, ntfs and network

smbmount/mount interaction
Hello,
I'm looking for some (user & technical) feedback on a change I'm
considering on how mount and smbmount works together.
The current way mounts are done are:
mount -t smbfs ... => smbmount ... => smbmnt
Possibly without the mount step. smbmount stays as a daemon and reconnects
when asked (unless it crashes).
Problems:
- Some mount options should affect if the mount

Reliable Samba just stopped mounting Windows machine
I have been mounting a Windows machine with no problems whatsoever for
the year. Suddenly this afternoon it won't mount any more. No recent
changes have been made on the machine. The only thing I've done
recently is load and get Thunderbird working. Most things are done as
user not root in KDE xterms.
My Linux machine is Slackware Linux 10.0.
There is an iptables firewall that

[patch] smbmount fixes for samba-2.0.7, testers wanted!
Hello all
This patch tries to remove a few bugs from smbmount. It would be nice to
get some testing+feedback on this from others using smbmount and possibly
get these things fixed for the next release of samba.
It does the following:
* Change lib/debug.c to allow changing your mind on being interactive.
A second call to setup_logging should now replace the effects of a
previous call. (hmm,

smbmount on redhat 9
I use samba in a very limited application to mount smb shares using smbmount. I have a simple script I use that mounts several shares to a variety of mount points as a specific user on my system. The script passes username, password, share, mount point, domain information to each call to smbmount. This script worked perfectly under redhat 8.0 but since upgrading to redhat 9 I have had some

smbmount/smbumount getting rid of dead connections
I've got a win98 laptop and a linux box. On my linux box, I smbmount
a directory from the laptop. Alas, win98 boxes
crash a lot, and I move the laptop a lot... to and from work.
If the laptop crashes or if I move it with a shared directory mounted
on my linux box, that mount gets "Stuck".... it's
present in /etc/mtab but when I cd to it and do an ls it says:

FW: smbmount problem
Hi
Sorry about the misplaced Q
I tried to use a script that when user will logon to the machine he will
mount to smb mount (instead of fstab if it's problem)
I sow on several places the option to use on /etc/fstab this line
//server/share /mnt/home smbfs noauto,user 0 0
and I tried to put on script smbmount //server/share /mnt/home -o
username=$USER and get

a bug in smbmount
Hello All!
There was a problem: then the samba server goes down, the smbfs
tries to reconnect only once. Then the server returns online
the smbfs dont restore connection and say "I/O error"
without keeping trying to reconnect.
I found that there is no problem in smbfs kernel module.
Each time it got CONN_INVALID, it send SIGUSR1 to smbmount daemon,
which has to restore connection.

I've been working with smbfs/smbmount the last few weeks to allow my
linux log processing server access to the logs on our NT servers. The
problem is that after a period of time all the smbfs mounts become
invalid with either one of two errors. When you do a 'df -k' to view
the mounts you see the following:
