Sharing in another network
Hi,
I'm trying to share a machine that's on the other side of a gateway.
The machine being shared is a Linux (kernel 2.2.1 (RedHat 5.2) and samba
2.0.3), and the box trying to access it is NT4.0 with SP5.
It looks something like this

|Linux|-----------|Gateway|----------| NT |

Machine account found and not found in 3.0.2
Brad,
I found your posting of 2/20/2004 with the subject line of
"upgraded to 3.0.2 -> funkyness in machine accounts" while investigating a
similar problem.
I upgraded to 3.0.2 last week from 3.0.0.
I have a system which I just added to the domain successfully. However, when I
attempt to log a domain user onto that machine, I get this error:
The system cannot log you on to

server not visible anymore
Hello everyone,
I used samba 1.9.x before and everything was fine. The samba
server lived in some local network and I could see it from my NTbox
as well as from Win95/98 clients.
I upgraded to version 2.0.3 and now my server is gone though I use
the same smb.conf file which is pretty basic. I can connect to it
using the "\\server\share" convention and can also see it when I do

problem with smbclient access to NT4.0 WS share
Thanks to all for a wonderful package. It's sharing fine from my
Debian box but smbclient isn't working the other way round. Here's
the detail:
I have three machines together: an NT4 Workstation (sp3), a
Win95 machine and a Debian (Hamm = latest stable release). The
NT 4 machine has a shared drive I want to access from my Debian
machine. I can access that share from the win95

nmbd dying
nmbd has been dying on me occasionally. I'm running mandrake 9.2 with
samba3-server-3.0.0-2mdk. We've got our users in ldap but I'd seen this
symptom previously when I was using an earlier version of samba that didn't
support ldap. There is nothing useful in the logs and a PS shows a nmb
process still running.
This last time around, I had a ptrace running on both nmbd

badly mangled names from certain old apps
I just took on a new client who is having a curious problem with mangled
names. Here's the history as I understand it:
Originally they were on an NT server and there was no issue.
My predecessor moved them to a samba server running on gentwo. I do not know
what version of samba or how he moved the data, but when he did so, any files
and folders with more than 8 characters started

problem: HP-UX 10.20 + encrypted passwords
Hi!I've been using samba on my DEC boxes for years, and the last year
(NT4)
with encryption (libdes-3.14). This has worked fine. So I compiled it up
on my
HP box (10.20), no sweat, everything works cool. But then a few users
start
using ataman rsh daemons on their NT boxes. This works fine when using
the
NT boxes with the DEC servers but the HP boxes fail after 2-3 accesses.

get_domain_user_groups: You should fix it, NT doesn't like that
Running Samba 3.0 on Linux 2.4.21 with acl patch. The NT box is an NT 4
SP 6 Server. The Samba is set up as a PDC.
I have a file F:\c.txt, which is owned by user usera with Special Access
(of Take Ownership, only) given to user userb. If I log in as userb and
try to do take ownership on that file we get the error "Access Denied"
from the GUI and immediately in the log, I see:

Halfway there...
WinNT & Samba/Linux (on RedHat 5.2) are now quite happy to chat provided
that the Samba Server isn't expected to allow the NTBox to write anything.
That is: r works, rw doesn't.
I followed the DIAGNOSIS txt file for SAMBA, and everything is fine except
for TEST 10. I tried setting the security level to SERVER and pointing it
at the NT box with no joy. The thing is, I can't even

Migrating an existing NT domain to samba
What is the best path to follow to migrate an existing NT domain to a Samba
server.
I've got several other Samba domains elsewhere, but none of them started as NT
domains so I didn't have to do a migration.
The existing network has several servers, all of which I intend to retire
from fileservice once this migration is finished. At the moment I have my samba
server on the network in

slow setup time
I'm seeing some very slow setup times.
Here's what I did. I started ethereal while things were running fine and then
I waited until my windows box didn't show up in findsmb (I have keepalive
set to "yes", so I don't see why it times out at all). I then went
into "My computer" which was very slow. When I look in ethereal, I see some
interesting nubmers in

Bug#23903: samba: samba maps username before authenicating with NT password server
Hi,
I am the Debian GNU/Linux of the Samba package in this distribution.
Today I received this bug report but since I don't use the
authentication method this user mentions, I can't reproduce the
problem. I heard Jeremy Allison said something about a bug in 1.9.18p8
regarding user mappings and posted a patch but since the patch is
applied to the version of Samba this user is using, I am

Windows client doesn't show up in findsmb
What does it mean if a windows XP consistently doesn't show up in findsmb
even when it does show up in smbstatus?
Also, I don't know if this is related or not, but the same machine sometimes
shows up in smbstatus with two different PIDs. We've seen this with two
different machines, both running XP.
Here's smbstatus output (the machine in question is accountingiii):

File already in use?
Hi,
I'm running 3.0.4 and have had several reports from users both using Office
and Lotus where the application tells them that the file is already in use
when we know it isn't.
(BTW, there's a typo on the man page under "lock spin count". "acquired", not
"aquired".)

Sluggish server response
A user who had not been using the server for about half an hour
had to wait for over a minute before the samba server would respond.
This is using samba3-server-3.0.2a-2mdk. I hope to upgrade to 3.0.4 as soon
as Buchan has the RPM ready.
In the below log, the user tried to log in at about 10:27 or so. I think
I'm not learning anything from this log, so I've also attached part of

tdbsam backend
I just compiled some RPMS for Mandrake 9.0. I would like to try the TDB
bAckend before I do the LDAP stuff. (It took me awhile to get that set
up in 2.2)
Everything installed ok but it seems that the pbedit3 tool can't find a
library. The error message I get is:
[root@luna root]# pdbedit3
