winbind problem with mixed case Windows accounts
When we deployed winbind, we converted our mixed case NT accounts to lower case. At that time, smb.conf setting was "password server = PDC" and everything worked great. Subsequently we changed the setting to "password server = *". and discovered that the BDC remembers, somewhere, the old version of these PDC accounts. "User Domains" on the BDC shows the correct

Samba 2.0.x unusable for this environment
I just attempted to upgrade from Samba 1.9.18p10 to Samba 2.0.4b, and I have had to revert to 1.9.18p10 in less than a day. I attempted to upgrade to 2.0.1 back in January, and had to back off as well. I was hoping the problems I saw then would be resolved in 2.0.4b. I sent a message to this list back in January or February as well, but saw no responses. My environment is about 210 Win95 PCs

approximate net rpc vampire HOWTO, as promised
Hi Folks, as promised, here's what I did to get net rpc vampire working. There's a question at the bottom that someone might be able to answer for me. If the detail below is sane, I'll tidy it up some and submit it as a proper HOWTO. If not, please tell me where I'm being insane :) ====================================================================== Using 'net rpc

10 X Linux boxes - join win2k AD (mixed mode)
Hi All, I'd like to know your views on the following: I have around 10 Linux servers, any that run samba or on version 2.2.* they have there own smbpasswd files, but are within the same win2k browse domain. I'd like to upgrade to samba 3.0.* and currently use openldap to authenticate Unix users to any of the Linux boxes. I'd like to get rid of using multiple smbpasswd files, and

Samba Upgrade issues
Over the last three days I've been upgrading my Samba infrastructure. This involved moving from Red Hat Enterprise 3.0 (Samba 3.0.9) to Ubuntu 5.10(Samba 3.0.14) and some new hardware. For the most part things went well. But I do have some unresolved issues that I would like to get some feedback on. Keep in mind that this entire setup has been working properly for more than two years in

samba - ad domain trust windows 2003 native mode
Hello Is it possible to establish an interdomain trust between samba 3.0.25c and Windows 2003 Active Directory in Windows 2003 native mode? According to the howto Chapter 18, last phrase it is not: "It works with Samba-3 and NT4 domains, and also with Samba-3 and Windows 200x ADS in mixed mode ". But Volcker Lendecke replied on a mail in the samba mailing list: List:

%U/%u expansions in Mixed Active Directory (2000/XP/2003 Server) and NT4 environment with samba 3.0.0 and winbind
Hi all, I have had the unfortunate joy of upgrading my PDC to Windows Server 2003 and active directory, I also upgraded to samba 3.0.0 on a debian testing box. Before I was running a happy little environment with Windows NT4 and Samba 2.2.8 with winbind using the "winbind use default domain = yes". Migration went smooth, switch to security = ADS and joined the directory. Everything was

Browsing - NT/Windows 2000
Hi All, I am currently experiencing an unusual symptom some of you might be able to help me with. Currently I have two Windows based servers. The first is a Windows 2000 server upgrade of the original NT PDC. The second is the original NT BDC. The two servers running Samba 2.0.6 are both HP-UX 10.20. Historically, the BDC was always used for authentication Samba-wise as the password server,

Hot-failover between a Samba 3.x.x PDC and BDC with LDAP backend
I would like to know how to achieve a "hot-failover" setup between a Samba 3.x.x primary domain controller and backup domain controller with a LDAP backend. I was under the impression that all I need to specify is something like the following in my smb.conf: passdb backend = ldapsam:"ldap://pdc-srv.domain.org ldap://bdc-srv.domain.org" I have set this passdb backend

Dovecot 2.2.16: disappearing messages, mismatched summaries, duplicated messages, excessive full re-downloads
The update to dovecot2-2.2.18/dovecot-pigeonhole-0.4.8 seems to have made problems worse. Whole directories don't load at all - or they may load a weird segment - like mail from a few months ago back and mail from the last two days, but nothing in between. I did a # find /mail -name "dovecot.index*" -type f -delete and then on the client side (K9) things clear up, on TB a Right

Need help setting up a Samba 3.x Backup Domain Controller with LDAP
I would like to know the options I need in my smb.conf to have for setting up a Samba 3.x Backup Domain Controller when using LDAP. What I am confused about is reference made in the smb.conf man page to "idmap". From the man page and Samba how-to documentation, I understand this "idmap" reference to only be used for member servers and backup domain controllers that

Issue with SambaNTPassword not replicating
Hi, I set up a Samba PDC/BDC configuration some time ago using LDAP as configured here - http://www.atlanticlinux.ie/blog/?p=25 The configuration has been working without problems for a few months now but we have noticed one issue. When users take their laptop from the network the PDC is serving to the networking the BDC is serving - they sometimes have problems logging in. A dig through

Asterisk in a mixed phone environment
Hi, How difficult is to setup and maintain an Asterisk PBX with phones from multiple vendors? Is it even worth considering or is it safer to pick one vendor for phones and stick with them? I am more concerned about proprietary DHCP extensions, firmware upgrades etc..If anyone has any thoughts or experiences they would like to share I would be more than happy to hear from them. Thanks -Ravi

btrfs kernel threads producing high load and slow system down
Hello, I habe the problems described in here https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Gotchas: Files with a lot of random writes can become heavily fragmented (10000+ extents) causing trashing on HDDs and excessive multi-second spikes of CPU load on systems with an SSD or large amount a RAM. On servers and workstations this affects databases and virtual machine images. The nodatacow mount option

snmpwalk Mixed Fail
Hi All, I have a C6 (latest patches) physical machine that I use for network and server monitoring, predominantly over SNMP. It is on VLAN80. My network management interfaces on the switches are on VLAN50 with routing between the VLANs. I recently changed the router to a CISCO ASA 5505 (reasonably recent IOS version, certainly post HeartBleed), with the management interface on a higher

Samba as a PDC in a citrix environment
Hi all, this is a long time since my last post to this list and I have got a small question... (ofcource :) I'm going to introduce citrix into our office (two citrix XPa servers which are load balanced). According to the Citrix XPa docs it is not a good idea to use one of this servers as a PDC/BDC, I can imagine that (we wouldn`t want to give NT to much responsebilities). so my question
