Transparent WINS hostname resolution?
Hi, all. I've always assumed that there's a way to do transparent
WINS-based hostname resolution, but I'm durned if I can figure out how.
In other words, I imagine that you could just add another entry to
/etc/resolv.conf (eg., "hosts: files dns wins") that would allow me to
ping foo
and have it attempt to resolve through each in turn. Does this exist, and

I've fallen and I can't... re-join?
Hi, all. I've got a few PCs that, for various reasons, "fell out" as
members of my domain. The problem here is that they didn't know it, and,
using cached information, have been chugging along fine for their end
users. This means that their locally cached profiles are w-a-y out of
synch with the stuff on the server.
So, my question: is there any way to "re-add" the

Why does fstab fail when command line mount works?
Okay; I'm stumped. My old boss just asked me a question, and I thought I had
an easy answer, but nooooooooo. I also apologize if this has been hashed
out, but I'm unable to find the answers after several pages of Google hits.
Anyway, if I try to do this:
mount -t smbfs -o username=kend,password=blah,workgroup=xanoptix
//freedom/kend /mnt/smb/
from the command line, it works fine.

Filename for printing?
Hi, all. I'm trying to create a PDF queue... or, rather, I already have a
homebrew solution I hacked together with an lprng filter, and it doesn't
work too well. The solution at www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/bright.html,
which uses the smb.conf and "print command" paramaters, appears to be much
more elegant, but has one major shortfall: I don't see any way to get the

Uniden UIP200 -- configured, but not working?
Hi, all. I've got my Uniden UIP200 configured via TFTP (had to get DHCP
3.0.1 -- Debian's latest is 2.0.x!), and all seems well... except for the
minor detail that it doesn't work. It registers fine with Asterisk, but
when I copied my Grandstream's sip.conf info and plugged in the Uniden
stuff, no dice. Any ideas?
Thanks...

winpopup system check script
I don't pretend to be the first, but we have a FreeBSD server for
mail and samba here and the other sysadmin types (not me. :-) )
use win95. I thought of this as a quick solution to letting them
know when there's a problem.

Installing manpages?
Hiya! How do I, from a source install, make the manpages install? I've
got 2.2.5, and have hand-compiled for ages, but have no idea how to, as
part of the build process, install the manpages.
Thanks,

"Re-constituting" smbpasswd machine entry?
Hey, all. Somehow, a couple of lines with machine entries got deleted
out of my smbpasswd file. Is there any way to "re-constitute" these
entries, or do I have to remove and restore the machines from/to the
domain? I'd vastly prefer to just pull the relevant info from the
clients, if there's any way to do so...
Thanks,

Winpopup to Every PC
Hello All,
Does anyone know how one could send the same Winpopup message to all
Win-clients on a network?
I need it for building a fail-over system, in case our primary server
goes down, I need a way to automate the process of informing all clients
that they need to log-off the network, wait a few minutes and then log
back on, while the back-up server switches a few configuration files and

ACLs on client Samba machines with Samba PDC.
I've got a Samba box (2.2.5a) as a member of a Samba domain. Both the PDC
and client are running 2.4.18 with XFS and ACLs compiled in. Problem: on
the client, I can -NOT- modify the ACLs for files from Windows. (Note
that I can modify the stock Unix permissions, but not the extended
users/permissions that ACL support offers.) If I try, they just vanish
when I click "OK".

Three (quick?) questions...
[Please excuse if this is a repeat; I initially tried to send it from a
different account, and it's been held up for a couple of days awaiting
moderation.]
1) What's the absolute minimum required (hardware-wise) in order to get one
in-bound POTS line into Asterisk, and then have IP phones "inside?"

winpopup
Hi,
I have a linux (redhat 6.0) print server and I am running samba 2.0.3-8
serving win95 machines. I would like the print server to send a message to
the win95 when a print job is completed. To do that, I run winpopup on
win95. However, if win95 users close winpopup, they do not receive any
message. Is there any more realiable method to communicate with win95
machines?
I would appreciate any

sending "WinPopup" message to a user
Just wondering if there is a way to send a WinPopup message to a user

allow sending messages to a computer name.
Thanks in advance,

Winpopup help - will pay
Before I start I should say that I will pay $2000US to
get the information or code I seek.
I need code or protocol specs to be able to send
winpopup messages. It cannot be done via mail slots
because it has to work over the internet at large. If
you type in "net send x.x.x.x hello" on any windows nt
or xp machines it will send a winpopup using UDP ports

Sending / Receiving WinPopup on Ubuntu Linux Workstation
Greetings-
Perhaps slightly OT, but still involving the SMB/CIFS protocol:
I am searching for an application which would allow a Linux client (Ubuntu) to send/receive WinPopup messages.
The only one I have located thus far is LinPopup. However, it depends on the Samba (server) package. I do not want to deploy a bazillion Samba servers!
TIA!

Wanted: Unix Winpopup receiver program.
I want to use smbclient -M to send new mail notification to unix users.
I have some of our workstations running smbd from inetd and am using the
"message command" option quite successfully.
What I was wondering is, has someone implemented the winpopup reception
end in a form that would be more efficient than using full blown smbd?
Am I making myself clear?
Perhaps if someone could
