SIDs and UIDs and RIDs - Oh My!
I'm trying to grasp pg. 154 of the "Official SAMBA-3" book by Terpstra and
Vernooij and I'm just missing a critical networking concept.
I understand that SIDs are the numerical identification of a user for the
Windows world.
I understand that UIDs are the equivalent for the *nix world.
But what the @$@! is a Relative IDentifier (RID)?!?
On page 153 the command to map a

clarify issues on joining Samba PDC, machines, RIDs,
I'm running into issues trying to configure a server to be a Samba PDC in
a small network that contains only Win2k/XP workstations. This will be
going into an environment where there are no Windows server. There is a
pre-existing Samba server that will be replaced, but it'll be easier to
recreate user accounts than attempt migration (there were no machine
accounts).

zfs reports small st_size for directories?
Why does ZFS report such small directory sizes? For example, take a maildir directory with ten entries:

drwx--x--x 14 root root 14 May 12 2006 ..

spelling mistake in utils/net_groupmap.c but isnt really a bug
Hi developers
i have noticed a spelling mistake when you execute a net groupmap add
command.
For example
bash# net groupmap add unixgroup=uni-staff-planningfinance
ntgroup=uni-staff-planningfinance type=domain comment='All Planning and
Finance Staff'
No rid or sid specified, choosing algorithmic mapping
Successully added group uni-staff-planningfinance to the mapping db

Domain Admins
Hi,
I'm trying to set up one of my users to be a domain admin. I have
unix/ldap group called "domainadm" with "user1" a member of the group.
When I run "net groupmap list" I get the following:
Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-186220259-3826000728-3192352269-7033) -> domainadm
But when I go to log in to the domain with "user1" on a winxp machine,

Samba 3.0alpha24 / OpenLDAP / support for groups broken?
Hello!
we are trying to get Samba 3.0a24 to work with OpenLDAP. After creating
the guest - user manually in the LDAP directory, everything seemed to
work fine. However we cannot create any group. The "net group map"
command runs without any error message, and states:
blue# ./net groupmap add rid=999 unixgroup=syadm
Successully added group syadm to the mapping db

"Well-known Windows RIDs" vs. UIDs/GIDs
Hey all,
I'm looking to merge multiple NT4 domains into a single infrastructure
based on Samba3 and OpenLDAP on Linux of the Debian Sarge flavour (and,
Bob willing, Samba4 before long).
In order to allow some resources to be shared from a single Linux
instance, I'm rather hoping that I can put every domain's information
into a single LDAP DIT. The Samba PDCs will use only portions of

Winbind, rids, gids, uids
Is there any SIMPLE way to maintain consistent mappings between windows
RIDs and UNIX/LINUX UIDs/GIDs among multiple samba servers servers
running winbindd? Will that problem be addressed in future samba
releases? I've read about the "idmap backend" possible solution but is
that the only current one? Help!!!

HELP !!! migrating from win2000 pdc to linux pdc
Hello,
Second post: first had logs attached but was too big.
I have a test environment with 1 windows 2000 AD domain pdc ( mixed mode
install ), 1 linux server ( to become pdc ) and a win xp box to test logon
when the migration was completed. The problem is no matter what I try
after the migration the win xp's logonserver = windows server not linux
server. I have no idea what is going

Domain Admin with tdbsam on 3.0.2a
Firstly I apologise for the length of this query but I am hoping that if I
document everything I did someone might respond / be able to help.
My Configuration is Samba 3.0.2a as a PDC on Redhat 8. I cannot for the
life of me get the "Domain Admins" functionality to work
I am hoping that another set of eyes can shed some light on this problem
as I have now spent 41 hrs googling /

Groups and LDAP
I'm a little weak on how the groups assignments work with Samba and
LDAP. The Samba HOWTO collection says to map each Domain Group to a
UNIX system group, but if all authentication is done via LDAP (Unix and
Windows) then do the groups still have to exist on the Samba Unix
machine? Where do the RIDs fit into all this? I don't see a schema in
LDAP for sambaGroup. Do I create the

adding machines to the domain with Samba 3.0.0
Is there something special I need to do to let root add computers to the domain in 3.0?
When I try to add the workstation I get an error about 'user not found' even though I can
logon to a workstation joined to the domain as 'root'. I was able to add computers to the
domain with 2.2.8 with an 'add user command' entry and 'domain admin group = root' in my

Relevant part of "net3 groupmap list" is
System Operators (S-1-5-21-1617713866-2789119093-1479812082-1007) -> sys
In howto there is the following example
net groupmap modify ntgroup="System Operators" unixgroup=sys
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Power Users" unixgroup=sys
You can add System Operators but trying to add Power Users fails. If you do it in reverse

Problem with duplicated groups?
Hello, i have some problems migrating a Windows 2000 PDC to a Debian
GNU/Linux Samba Server, i want to migrate it to a LDAP backend.. but as
i'm kind of newbie with ldap and samba migration stuff, i preffered to
migrate it to tdbsam first and try it for a while, if everything works
fine, then switch to a ldap backend.
The problem is that Essential Windows Groups are automatically created,

Migrate to Debian Etch - nogo
Hi Everyone,
I have a small project going on. I'm about to migrate Redhat 7.3 to
Debian Etch (smbd version 3.0.23d-2+b1).
I've already managed to migrate Redhat 7.3 to Debian Sarge (smbd version
3.0.14a-) without any bigger problems.
However, when I migrate to Etch I face a small problem. The last thing I
want to do before I start samba is to grant my linux/samba admin,
