puppet and domainnames
Hello all,
when I do a signature request to puppetmaster, if no domainname is
configured then puppet gets it from /etc/resolv.conf. Even if the
"search" line is commented. I had to delete the search line in
resolv.conf to obtain a signature request with hostname only, and then
it appears with a final dot (hostname.). Is it that puppet does not like
being domainless ?

Breaking Windows XP user password?
Granted this is not a UNIX system, but in case there is a UNIX tool to
accomplish the goal...
I am looking for a bootable CD/DVD (or application to be placed on a CD/DVD to
be made bootable) that can let me mount a Windows XP drive/partition (SP1 or
SP2), and force-crack the admin password (even if admin account name has been
changed, but I know what it has been changed to). The application

Mounting an ntfs disk
I would like to mount an ntfs disk on my
Linux Redhat 9.0 system, so that I can
access windows dlls. It is on another partition
on my disk. When I try to mount it, for example,
mount -t auto /dev/hda1 /winroot
I get the error message:
mount: fs type ntfs not supported by kernel
Do I need to do something special to build in kernel
support for ntfs? I get the impression it is supported

Migrating same domain
This weekend, we're replacing a customer's Windows 2003 server with a Samba box. They lost their Windows media and we can't reset the administrator password, so we can't even login to the server to examine it. The best we can do is to boot Knoppix and copy the filesystem onto an external USB drive, to recover their files. We're not sure how we will recover their Exchange mail

samba with daemontools
Hi all,
I am trying to use samba with daemontools. (and it's brother runit:
http://smarden.org/runit/).
I do not want to talk much about runit itself. The main point is that
samba *must* run in foreground mode (no fork, no detach from terminal).
It is fine up to this point. I found an option '-F' and if I start with
smbd -F It will run in foreground so it's OK.
But I want to

Debugging Privilege and Samba 3.0.11
Hello,
I am striving to give out globally to our developers a way to debug
their C++ applications, but I do not want to give them Admin rights on
the individual workstations.
I thought I found the light when reading on MSDN that to debug users
need to be members of the "Debugger Users" group (according to VS.Net).
This group seems to be created with a random SID when installing

query: bad tsig signature for key
hi,
At least with a recent version if it is a time sync issue nsd will do a specific log msg that.
Laura,
can you send over the actual configuration?
(maybe replacing the key with a placeholder or rotating the keys afterwards)
It sounds strange if nsd checks tsig on the notify, but allow xfr without it.

Tam?s

CentOS bootstrapper for chroot(2) environment
Hi,
just some script built along: Unattended install & run CentOS-4.1 just using
chroot(1). Mostly a surprise for me it was so easy to reach that goal.
It requires rpm(1) based host OS and it was tested only on Fedora Core 4.
I needed it to do only a bit customized CentOS kernel package rebuild.

Lace

[PATCH 1/9] Convert config file to XML, and translate networks/bridge for all connections
Previously, only the LibVirtXML connection translated network and bridge names
in imported metadata. This change moves this functionality in Converter, making
it available to LibVirt connections as well.
At the same time, the format of the config file is switched to XML. The primary
driver for this is that the allowable syntax of a foreign network/bridge name is
not known. Rather than create a

Upgrade from 4.1.9 to 4.1.17
Dear Members,
I would like to share my success story with a scheduled samba4 upgrade.
Our faculty domain contains one dc and two fileserver, plus the pc labor
windows machines(7 room * 25 machines). We use debian on the servers and
installed samba4 from stable backports.
Experiences:
* i could successfully apply the samdb.py and user.py pathces from

winbindd and pam error
Dear Members,
Today i upgraded my small domain which ran on debian 7 to debian 8. The
samba version does not change, it stays at 4.1.17
After the upgrade i noticed, that the ssh password auth does not work on
the member servers. Excerpt from the log:
