RE : Samba as a PDC / Windows NT 4 SP6a as a BDC
Are you sure of that ? I thought it was possible...
If it is not, I've got another slightly off topic question : how to I demote my former Windows NT PDC (that is now a BDC) to a normal Windows NT server, so that I have no problem with it ?
Thanks in advance.

Migrating from NT4 to Samba/LDAP - Demoting PDC to domain member
Hello All,
I'm looking for some advice \ shared past experiences of users on the list.
I am in the process of planning a migration from an existing NT Domain to
a Samba 3 / LDAP based domain. However, the existing NT4 PDC is also home
to our Exchange 5.5 email server which we would like to keep in service.
I imagine what i need to do is add the old NT4 PDC server to the new Samba
Domain once i

Demote old NT4 PDC to member of Samba domain?
Hi,
When installing Samba, I made it a PDC in a new domain. Now I would like
the old NT4 PDC in the old domain to become a plain host in my Samba
domain. Is this possible? I need to keep the old NT4 machine because
it's running the Symantec Corporate Edition NAV.
In other words, I have
NEWDOMAIN with Samba PDC and all clients
OLDDOMAIN with NT4 PDC alone, no client
Can my NT4 PDC become

Thanks
But this is for demoting a PDC to a BDC. I've done that already. What I want to demote my BDCs to standalone server. I'll give a try to upromote.
Kind regards

VMware Printing Problem - Access Denied, Unable To Connect
Running Samba 2.28 on a SuSE Linux Pro 9.0 system, equipped with VMware
Workstation 4. A Windows 2000 Pro guest OS is installed in VMware.
Printing from the W2K OS doesn't work. I was able to add the printer as
a network printer OK (it appears as a network printer when using My
Network Places to browse to the Linux Samba server), but the printer
status reads Access Denied, Unable to Attach

Printing Problem With USB Epson C84
OK, I've solved all of my previous permissions issues, now I just need
to get the output out.
Setup:
SuSE 9.0 Pro running Samba 2.2.8a. VMware installed with Windows 2000
Pro guest OS. Epson C84 attached via USB prints fine from Linux with
CUPS and also via the commandline using smbclient > print. With data
shares, I have no problems.

Decommissioning old PDC
I'm trying to decommission our PDC which is running on some older
hardware and migrate it's functionality to one of our two currently
operating BDCs for the domain. The three servers have nearly identical
configurations with only differences in file and printer shares and a
couple attributes like "wins support" and "domain master". They all have
identical netlogon

NT Domain to Samba-LDAP just disabling netlogon on NT PDC?
Hi group
Quick question before I switch my domain from NT4 PDC to Samba-LDAP:
Can I leave the old NT-PDC in my subnet, if I just disable it's netlogon
service?
Reason: This old NT-Server has a database running which is still needed
after the migration to samba, but it doesn't need to have any
NETBIOS-NTDomain functionality after the switch, just TCP-IP.
I know of third-party tools

Strange Samba Problem
Running SuSE 9.2. This problem happens with both the SuSE-supplied Samba on
the DVD, as well as the SuSE update rpms to 3.0.9. We even removed all the
*.tdb files and recreated the installation from scratch, as always carefully
following the steps in S3BE. FWIW, this same config worked previously on this
and earlier systems; we did not change anything on this system (other than

Samba 3.0.7, SuSE 8.2 and Heimdal Compile Problem
Trying to follow Chapter 9.3.3 of S3BE to create a SuSE 8.2 Active Directory
domain member server.
9.3.3 says heimdal >= .6 is required. I installed the Sernet packages and saw
0.6.2 source is included. Running ./configure after unpacking the heimdal
source completes OK, but running make results in the following errors:

Old question - NT4 BDC in Samba domain?
Hi!
I have to migrate a samba domain to an Active Directory and
therefore I need as first step to have a NT4.0 BDC in my network.
As I don't find an useful answer via google I want to ask you if a
NT4 BDC will work in a Samba PDC enviroment?
regards

Similar situation - though we've been able to replicate it fairly easily in
google apps.

Can't get 3.0.23d from SuSE RPM to be a member in an NT4 domain
Been working with Samba back to 1.9 or so, but this is the first time
I've tried to set it up as a domain member server.
I followed (I think) the instructions on how to do this in TOSHARG
(which are about as disjointed as the book, which I took back), but I
continue to be unable to get the box, running winbind, to reliably
authenticate users off the PDC, which is running NT4 (and I'm not

Replace NT4 PDC
I have an NT4 PDC that I would like to replace with a Samba server. My
network also has a box running MS Exchange and Backoffice (not the same
box as the PDC).
What's the general roadmap for doing this?
Could I install Samba as a BDC and then promote it.
Should I create a new domain on Samba and do a big cutover?
Or is there a way to just get the necessary info off the PDC and

NT4 to Samba 3 Migration
I've done the net rpc vampire and gotten all the user and machine
accounts from the NT server, I've test logged in, checked permissions,
set groups, tested some of our odd apps and it all looks good. The
problem I'm having is switching the desktops, and keeping the
(non-roaming) profiles.
I'd like to have it so everyone reboots their computer after the Samba
switch over, and then

strange Samba - NT4 domain connectivity problem.
Hi all.
I'm having a strange intermittent problem with Samba 2.2.8a losing
connectivity with our PDC and BDC. We are currently having a problem
with our PDC restarting due to a bug check about 2-3 times a month.
When this happens and the PDC is restarted or anytime it is restarted,
we are not able to map shares on any of our 5 servers using samba 2.2.8a
- the fix is to kill smbd and nmbd

LDAP: PDC to BDC replication issues
Harry,
Thank you.
Unfortunately we don't have the choice of upgrading LDAP due to distro not supporting the newer version. However we have managed to get it to work. A lot of fiddling around.
I do have another question though ;). Now that we have LDAP replicating, how do I transfer the "samba classic " PDC role to our BDC. I have read that using the domain master=yes in smb.conf

samba security updates broke NT4 DC setup
I've been running a NT4-style domain with a samba 3.x PDC using a
LDAP back end and it's mostly worked very will for a long time.
However since yesterday, clients are having problems with the domain. I
saw that updates came out on all my systems - my PDC and BDC are ubuntu
12.04 LTS. The samba version there still seems to be 3.6x. A client with
a problem that was working is Ubuntu

Help With Winbind Please
Setting up a temporary Samba Member Server as part of a domain with real
NT4 PDC and BDC machines. In two months the NT domain will go away to
be replaced by Samba/LDAP PDC and BDCs, but for now I'm stuck using
Winbind.
Actually, I'm just stuck!
The Samba box is running SuSE 9.0 and Samba 3.0.4-5 installed from the
SerNet rpms (ftp.sernet.de).
I followed chapter 9.3.2 in Samba-3 By
