WINS Retention
How does one get rid of machines from the WINS database?
They seem to hang around forever....and a restart doesn't solve it because the WINS data just gets passed around...

Is anyone using Ext3 on 2.4.x and software raid 5?
Is anyone using Ext3 on a 2.4.x kernel with software raid5? Does it
work correctly? Last I checked noone had tried it yet, but that was
before I went away on vacation.

Ok, Im an idiot. Can't remount the ext3 filesystem because I deleted the /.jounral file...
Hello everyone,
Ok, I admit it - I'm an idiot. But it seemed the right thing to do at
the time.... I'm running RH 6.2 with a 2.2.19ext3 (ext3 0.0.7).
I wanted to try out the new 2.4 kernel line, so I upgraded modutils, gcc
and few other things.. Compiled the kernel (did NOT patch it to ext3)
and installed it and rebooted. Well, it didn't understand ext3 fs.. Ok...

ext3 0.9.6 vs ext3 0.9.9
Hello,
I have done extensive testing between 2.4.9 and 2.4.9-ac12 with ext3
0.9.6 and 0.9.9. I also tried using both kgcc and gcc-2.96.
I have a problem with logging into xdm or starting the gnome-session
totally locking up the machine while using ext3 0.9.9.
It seems to go away using ext3-0.9.6. During xdm/gnome-session the hard
disk is under heavy activity. I have attached my
kernel config.

EXT3 Worries
Dear Sir or Ma'am:
I am interested to think about implementing EXT3 onto my servers here.
However, I have some concerns and am hoping someone can address them.
1) If I install ext3 what is the likelihood that the extent of damage caused
by its bugs will be limited to just the fact that the journals may not work
properly? Alternatively, do I risk real damage to files and the filesystem

How to concatenate time series?
Hello,
I have just completed first experiments in using R, especially creating and
using ARIMA models, e.g.
# create a model as in example(arima)
fit <- arima(USAccDeaths, order = c(1,1,1),seasonal = list(order=c(1,1,1)))
# use the model to generate a prediction
dp<-predict(fit, n.ahead = 24)
plot(dp$pred) # view the prediction
Now I created a combined chart of the original and

large Xapian index files
Hello Arjen van der Meijden,
on xapian-discuss you mentioned that your Xapian installation has got up to
15 GB database size. Can you tell me about the largest index filesize you got?
According to <http://xapian.org/docs/scalability.html>, it seems that the
quartz database filesize is limited only by the OS and file system. Can you
confirm from your experience that there is no 2GB limit?

Trouble with Windows 2000 sp3
Hello,
I work in a development shop where we write code for both Linux and Windows,
and develop on both OS's on a codebase stored on a Linux drive with Samba
shares. Ever since I 'upgraded' my Windows 2000 system to service pack 3, I
have been having trouble compiling my code with Visual Studio over this Samba
connection.
Basically what happens is that Visual Studio reports

Multithread problem: Writing to a db disables reading from another one
Hi to all,
I have Xapian 0.8.1 installed on a single processor RH9 machine with a custom 2.4.20 kernel.
(I used ./configure without parameters.)
I have followed the recent "threaded test" discussion here, and I have tested the examples:
- Richard Boulton's example with one database, one writer, and three readers (1)
works fine, I only see the expected DatabaseModifiedError.

Searching without flush?
Hi,
I am using the Xapian-0.8.0 snapshot from 15-Apr-2004 02:14, and I am
using the same Xapian::WritableDatabase instance for indexing and searching.
Currently each search causes a database flush, which is slow.
How can I avoid this flush?
It seems that I have to modify Xapian to either
- search only the already flushed data (eventually missing some hits)
or
- search the un-flushed data, too.

QueryParser memory leak?
Hi Olly,
valgrind showed me what seems to be a memory leak:
QueryParser owns the Stopper and Stem instances it points to (since it
deletes them e.g. in set_stemming_options), but it does not delete them
at destruction.
(Btw., I don't test before deleting, but maybe "delete 0;" does not work
on all platforms?)

Delete dead browse lists
I've run into this problem a few times now and still haven't figured out how to fix it without shutting down my entire network.
We get a lot of guest and transient computers belonging to different workgroups.
The gleefully add themselves to the SAMBA domain master and the SAMBA master browse never gets rid of them.
Isn't there some sort of timeout or interface where these can be

Where do I get Alan's 2.4.8-ac-Kernel
Hi,
where do I get Alan's 2.4.8-ac?-Kernels including ext3. I only found
patches.
I could not patch them into my kernel (2.4.4-SuSE, Kernel from SuSE 7.2,
patched by them).
Should I download plain 2.4.8 and path the pathes into it? Which? How?
Or is there a tar.gz / tar.bz2 including these patches?
I would try ext3.

ext3-2.4-0.9.6
Patch against linux-2.4.8 is at
http://www.uow.edu.au/~andrewm/linux/ext3/
The only changes here are merging up to 2.4.8 and the bigendian
fix.
linux-2.4.8-ac1 currently has ext3-0.9.3 which has no known
crash-worthy bugs, but is old. I'm about to send Alan a diff
which takes -ac up to 0.9.6. The changes between 0.9.3 and
0.9.6 may be summarised as:

Perl vs. R
Dear All,
I am being told that R can process text files and strings as well as Perl
(and is certainly more elegant).
Being an R neophyte I need a little boost to get started. I have a little
benchmark program in Perl that reads a delimited file, creates an inverted
table and spits the file out again in key sorted order.
It's just a few lines of Perl (see below). Can someone write the
