can't create user entries in smbpasswd
Hi all,
after installing samba 2.2.5 (on Solaris8 running NIS+) it is not
possible to create user entries in smbpasswd.
I generated the smbpasswd file by
# cat /dev/null | /samba/samba-2.2.5/source/script/mksmbpasswd.sh >
/usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd
-----
then tried to create user entry "dummy" in smbpasswd by
(user "dummy" exists under NIS+)
# smbpasswd -a dummy

I tried using samba's internal dns server just to see if this made a
difference, but it did not.

Samba license info link yields 404 error.
Hi Samba team,
I'm one of the webmasters for oreilly.com, O'Reilly & Associates' Web site.
A customer sent us email stating that they got the following broken URL
from samba.org: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/licenseinfo.html.
Would you please update the URL? It should point people to
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/licenseinfo.html . This is

It is. I am using bind and include the .../samba/private/named.conf in my
primary bind file and changed the group of .../samba/private to named so
named could read the files.

I removed apparmer and I had to use bindflatfile as dlz was not working for

[Re: [Re: Won't Start Automatically]]]
My other source of info is the O'Reilly book _Using Samba_ by Ts, Eckstein,
and Collier-Brown. In Chapter 2, they say that the kills--the Kxxservices--
are always run first, then the Startups--the Sxxservice--are run. They're not
explicit on the numbering, but they imply that lower numbers are always run
before higher numbers. Finally, their example explicitly has the reader

confusing name mangling results
Dear sambaphiles,
I hope someone can help me understand why I see inconsistent name
mangling between Samba and Windows 2000.
I am running:

MAC: Mac OS 9.1; DAVE version 2.5.2
WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSION (ServicePack 2)

Can't add new users/passwords in 2.0.3v Samba on Solaris 2.7
I downloaded and installed the binary 2.03 Solaris 2.7 version
of Samba three days ago from the Samba web page. I installed as
root on my SUN Ultra5 unix system.
I have accessed your configuration tool via http://<my unix ip>:901.
I logged in as root, and have been able to set up global items and
shares.
I cannot setup new users under the 'passwords' tab. I enter
my user name,

Mapping / UNC question
Hiya!
I have a developer that would like to be able to have access to a share on a
UNIX server running Samba where he can use UNCs embedded in VB code on a
win2k client to access files on the share. No problem, easily done.
He also wants users to _NOT_ be able to use the Windows Explorer to map the
drive and gain access that way. He wants only for his embedded UNCs to
access the share.

Samba 2.2.5 update process
I recently downloaded the samba 2.2.5 update.
I ran GZIP and tar.
next i did the configuration according to Using Samba by Robert
Eckstein, David Collier-Brown, Peter Kelly 1st edition Nov. 1999.
Steps were as follows:
./configure
make
make install
added swat to /etc/services
swat 901/tcp
after all of this it does not appear that samba was actually updated.
I looked in samba.org for

winbindd: wins, bcast and subnets and ways to get across those
I run two samba servers in a pure windows 2000 environment. I
have two subnets: A server subnet and a client subnet, and one
samba server stands in each one of them.
My windows admins tell me that they do not run a wins server or a
pdc-emulator on their machines. I run winbind successfully in the
server subnet but fail to do so in the client subnet.
the server subnet samba server finds the

Feature request: copy attributes in gzcon
The `gzcon` function both modifies and copies a connection object:

con2 <- gzcon(con1)
# almost indistinguishable
con1==con2

Samba:connection only works one time
Hi all,
using samba 2.2.5; security=server
connecting as user1 (user logged in on PC) works (12:28:55),
disconnecting and connecting as another user2 (not the user logged in on
PC) works too (12:30:22), but disconnecting and connecting again as
user1 (user logged in on PC) fails (12:34:29) as well as user2
(12:38:19).
It seems it works only once and never again after one time logged in as
user2 ?
