Terminal emulation and serial ports
I have to reinit a firewall that can only be done from its console port,
and I do not have an XP system with Hyperterminal on it.
So I went through the archive and learned that minicom could do the job
for me. I installed it and went to configure it (minicom -s). I can
set the speeds, but the challenge is selecting the serial device. I
have a Serial-to-USB dongle, and when I connect it,

Transition from Courier-IMAP
Hello all,
Currently we are looking at the possibility of moving from Courier-IMAP
to Dovecot (the one that comes with Debian Lenny: version 1.0.15). I'm
currently testing it on a non-production server and have a few questions:
1) Currently all our clients use Thunderbird as their mail client to
read mail from our IMAP server. Thunderbird is configured with "INBOX."

calculation of inertial difference with huygens theorem in ward clustering ?
Hello to the R people,
within ward clustering the distance calculated to decide the clustering
of 2 subsets (h1 and h2) is the variation of inertia :
d(h1,h2)=I(h1Uh2)-I(h1)-I(h2);
i've been said that a way to calculate faster this d(h1,h2) is using the
huygens theorem decomposing the inertia into "the inertia to the
centroid + the distance to an axe" (that's my version ...). My

Problem with shared xls file. Could it be blamed on rsync?
Hi all!
I recently had a problem with a shared excel file which was rsynced from the
file- to the backupserver. The backups of this file went wrong and I can't
figure out why. The whole rsync and dump to tapes works like charm for a few
month now.
The situation was as followed. That xls lived (and was backuped) happily for
5 days. Then the users startet to share this file among 4 or 5 people.

Re: Bug#181699: #181699 Re: #181699 wine: vague error message: "dramatically effect" in what way?
What really matters is not whether Wine has a Windows drive and
filesystem to sit on top of, but whether or not Wine can use native
Windows DLLs instead of its builtin ones. Some DLLs in Wine are so
perfect that they can be used in Windows - no benefit will be gained
from running an app that uses these natively. Some of Wine's DLLs are
buggy or incomplete - using stock native Windows ones

lenny + xen reboots sometime
Hello,
I have a problem with debian lenny, xen-hypervisor-3.2-1-i386, 32bit Dom0
und 32bit Domu debian lenny on a IBM BladeCenter.
All is working fine and then sometimes the Blade reboots. When I add
noreboot in the menue.lst in Dom0 grub then the Server stops working and I
have to reboot manually. There are no error messages in the logs. The period
the server reboots is variable. Sometime it

privsep lost sometime between 3.5p1 and 3.7.1p1?
I haven't recompiled since 3.5p1.
I compile --with-privsep-user=nobody
* I observe that none of my processes is uid "nobody".
In addition, previously I had to disable privsep on either AIX or OSF1
(I forget which), this time it just worked. I was thinking it was
because Progress Had Been Made. Now, observing so many root processes,
I think it's because privsep is not actually

Samba seems to forget ACLs sometime
Hello,
I have a strange problem here, we have 4 samba servers plus a PDC with samba and openldap as backend.
Users are organized in groups and we give group ACLs to directories to grant access. This worked until
a few weeks ago, when we upgraded from Debian Sarge to Etch.
Since then samba seems to forget ACLs sometimes. This is almost not reproducible. Users who have normally access

Sometime cannot connect to samba server, Why
Hi,
I believe it's mentioned in one of the docs with the samba distro,
that this problem can happen, when you have File and print services
enabled on the PC's using a protocol _other_ than tcp/ip like NETBUI or
IPX. Samba use's TCP/IP only.

samba producing errors sometime after install
We've been experiencing some problems with Samba that I can't trace. We
installed a new Linux file server, running Samba to connect to the NT
workstations dotted around the place. All ran well for 10 days, maybe 2
weeks until we started finding that the NT machines would suddenly be unable
to connect to the fileserver. I restart the samba server and it all works
fine for maybe a day and

Wine sometime really surprise me
Software as Application, can always find a replacement. (Well most of the time) But Software as Games, there is good chance that you will never find a replacement. They are their own unique Art. (Classical games is another story, such as chess, and those "public domain") In order words, doesn't matter how old a game might be. it will not get obsolesce.

Sometime cannot connect to samba server, Why ?
I have posted this question 3-4 weeks ago, but still get no response.
In my environment, I have one Linux box running Samba 1.8.18p5, and
there are about 20 Win95 clients which is in the same network.
The porblem I usually encountered is when I click on the samba server
icon in the NN icon, sometime I can get thru without any problem.
However, there are also many times that I got error message

HP Toolbox kills Samba
Hi,
I've encountered the following problem at a client. The problem results
in one or more of the smbd processing continuously grabbing more and more
memory until the system runs out of memory or just becomes unusable due to a
low memory condition. This error is extremely serious as the entire server
is eventually brought down by one error.
After debugging this error at the

belongs_to :through ?
Suppose I have a belongs_to relationship and the thing it belongs to,
belongs in turn to something else.
For example, I would like to do:
belongs_to :city
belongs_to: :county, :through => :city
While it is not too much trouble to do obj.city.county, there are times
when I need to iterate through the attributes and include this
second-order attribute. Special code to handle this messes up

acts as ferret, make index in /tmp then copy back to avoid NFS slowness?
Hi,
We''re happily using Ferret through acts_as_ferret on a Rails website,
but we have an issue with rebuilding indexes.
The Rails project directories are on an NFS mounted volume and
running Model.rebuld_index there seems to take 60-100 times longer
than it does on a local filesystem (e.g. /tmp).
What we''d like to do is rebuild our indexes in say /tmp, then copy
them back when
