read_data: read failure for 4
Thse kinds of error messages show up all the time in my logs...is this bad? I've had no complaints about lost data or anything. I'm running samba 2.2.4 on FreeBSD 4.6 (previously 4.5), on an IDE RAID. I upgraded our file server from an older linux box about 4 weeks ago, and have been getting this error in the smbd logs ever since (ie, the entire times it's been running samba).

The Infamous "read_data: read failure for 4 bytes"
Hello all, I'm far from being a samba expert and truth be told I could use some education on networking in general but here it is... I have a stand alone samba server that I use a stunnel to connect to. Reads take place fine from the server but writes *always* fail exactly one time per open session, but if you immediately try to copy the file again it will work (without closing the window),

Xend, File Descriptors, and Children
I was having trouble restarting xend; oftentimes, after I stopped it, it wouldn''t start again. The problem was that xend was unable to open /dev/xen/evtchn because the device was already open. When xend brought up a network interface, I had it set to call a network script that configured DHCP for the new interface. Since dhcpd doesn''t support reloading its configuration, I

Connection by peers
Our Samba work very bad! My some users can't save changers in Exel and Word files. We have file-server ( Linux RH7.3, kernel 2.4.18, Samba-2.2.7a-1) We local network consists of 500 computers with NT Domain Controller (Win98,Win2000,WinXP,Microsoft Office 2000). The user opens a file, he changes it and sometimes can save a file, and sometimes no. Why? My smb.conf [Global] workgroup

question about Samba share in HTTP root dir [repost]
Hiya, i have had a HTTP directory tree shared out via SMB on my HTTP development server for a few years with no trouble. recently however various files have started becoming read-only as far as my Win2k machine is concerned. upon ssh-ing into the tree in question i find all the permissions are fairly open and i cannot see why i should have any problem at all. i was wondering if this might have

CD sharing via iso9660, mounted, and samba
I have installed a small Limux box in my local primary school, in order to sahre CD iso images. The system works fine, untill several w/s's concurrently access the same program , whereupon, we get spurious crashes. I have tried disableing op-locks, which seemed to help, but only slightly. Any suggestions gratefully received. Shane oplock_break: no break received from client within 30

Disconnected...:( It MUST be a kernel problem OR a Samba problem.
Here's what you asked for - along with some tcpdump data that shows what I'm thinking the problem is...If anyone knows what this is - I'd LOVE to hear it - I've seen lots of posts about this type of error from others, and none of those folks have posted their problem being fixed (they probably gave up on it like I did for awhile...) PXEboot: can't find configfile on tftpd server
Hello, I've got several machines which I'm trying to netboot, the setup is a bootserver using dhcpd3 and tftpd-hpa. When a machine boots up, it gets an ip address and downloads pxelinux.0 from the server, then it starts searching for pxelinux.cfg/[MACADDRESS] pxelinux.cfg/0A0000F0 and so on. On the server side I see in the syslog the client's DHCP-request and the client downloading

Read failure for 4. Error = connection reset by peer.
I am having a SERIOUS problem with our new 2.2.5 server. In fact I will probably be forced to move to a Windows 2000 Server platform, as the samba server is practically useless. Work on any files on the share cannot be done without major risk of losing data. I get these two errors all day: [2002/09/19 21:04:21, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_data(436) read_data: read failure for 4. Samba 2.2.7 as PDC causing BSOD on 2K domain logon
Hello, Have wrestled this one for about a week, now, getting frustrated ;-) Running samba as PDC for my domain (cf. smb.conf further down) When logging in on my 2K Pro machine, I first get a "can't find roaming profile, attempting local profile"-error, but logon using my user's smb account accepts only the correct password and so the identification part works well.
