The Ultimate Migration
Dear Fellow Samba Users:
I have mandrake 9.1 with Samba 2.2.8 running a domain with 500 users. It
has worked flawlessly for a long time. However, it is time to set up a new
server. I have a new server with Mandrake 10 OE and Samba 3.0.2 running.
Please explain to this newbie and very satisfied samba user how to migrate
all my users, groups, sid, domain, etc to the new machine. My goal is

Ghost Image + Winbind = Panic
I had a test machine up and running Samba, joining an AD domain, and set
up with winbind... when I ran "getent passwd" it would list all the
local users, and all the domain users. I could also log in as a domain
user without any problem. So, I made an image of the hard drive, and
copied it to 7 other machines. Now, those 7 are having a strange
problem. I changed the names and IP's of

Windows 2003 Active Directory and Group Access
Hi together,
we have a Windows 2003 Active Directory Server, working together with Samba Version 3.0.2a-Debian. It seems
everything (Kerberos authentication and so on) works fine. All the authentication is done by the windows 2003
server. My problem is, that I can't connect to a share via a windows xp client, when the share has an option
"valid user" which defines a group of the

Samba CANNOT work with DNS round-robin (?)
This is posed as a question more that a statement, so if you can show
that I'm wrong, please feel free to correct / flame me.
A couple of years ago, I identified a file corruption issue caused by
two people attempting to edit the same file via two different Samba
servers. The file was in a shared file space, mounted on both Samba
servers via NFS.
The problem, I believe, lies in the fact

Winbind: SID-gid mappings lost after server crash
Hello again,
my server crashed today. It crashed because it ran out of file handles,
which is not Samba's fault but mine. The server runs Suse 7.2 and Samba
2.5.5 with WInbind installed. The sever crash didn't effect any file
systems, because I managed to properly shut the server down.
The problem is that after I rebooted, some or all of the SID - uid/gid
mappings got mixed up; e.g. gid

A samba locking question
Hi,
Maybe this is a stupid question, but any way
Will samba use fcntl locking if level 1 and 2 oplocks is

Memory in R.
Hi,
I am pretty new in R.
In fact, I started using R last month.
So, be indulgent if my questions seem
too boring or obvious.
I have 2 basic questions:
1 - I want to increase memory, but I can't find
the right way. E.g: in stata, you just type "set memory 1g".
When I try to load huge datasets, R crashes.
2 - I want to clear the memory (no object or data), such as the

No, where lies madness is in the self-centred way in which some
people make demands of others to alter innocuous behaviour so that

Upgrading Samba Print Server
This weekend I'm planning on replacing my exisiting Print Server with shiny
new hardware. (YEA!!!)
But I'm concerned about the 50+ users that I have connected to the 10
printers this machine shares. Is there anything I need to do to make this a
quick/easy/painless process? I know I'll have to re-create the printer
definitions in the CUPS manager, which should be no problem. But

samba PDC and BDC with ldap master and slave backend
Hi all !
In the samba-Howto, i was looking on informations on how to set up
both a samba PDC and a samba BDC controller with ldap backend.
I can read:
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Do not install a Samba PDC on a OpenLDAP slave server...
Possible PDC/BDC plus LDAP configurations include:
. PDC -> LDAP master server, BDC -> LDAP slave server.

TDB functionality document
Hi,
Does someone know a document which explains the TDB structure.
functionalites, and format of the TDB files etc.
I need to understand why some of the TDBs like messages.tdb, unexpected.tdb,
brlock if not read_only, locking.tdb, session.tdb, wins.tdb are called with
TDB_CLEAR_IF_FIRST tdb flags.
Why some TDBs are opend with O_RDWR|O_CREAT flags viz. gencache.tdb,
group_mapping.tdb,

samba in a High Availability Configuration
Hello,
I'm sorry to post High availability oriented questions to this list, but
I was wondering about some samba configuration parameters and what
options are available.
I am using heartbeat, and to make a long story short, i have a floating
IP alias between 2 servers. (192.168.1.1 for example). When one server
is serving the data, it 'has' this ip. if the server fails over, the

tdbbackup with bouncing/shutting down samba possible?
Hi,
We are a small company, which has just started using samba.
Recently we have faced a few issues regarding the TDBs getting corrupted.
I have read that the only way of getting around this issue, is to regularly
take tdbbackups.
But, this process needs a downtime of my samba server, which we would not
want.
Instead, is there a way where I can take the tdbbackup with out shutting
down samba

Problems with TDBs on CTDB-managed Samba instance
Hi Jeremy,
Thanks so much for your reply! As a matter of fact, we did just that around 3:45p yesterday when our CTDB cluster was unable to self-heal from the latest in this series of failover events. Here's how the situation went down:
1) We saw flapping identical to that described in my original post
2) After about 30 minutes of waiting, CTDB was just spinning with `smbd` repeatedly

How to "recover" the printer drivers?
Samba 2.2.8a-1, RH8.
... So, I had to reinstall. Fortunately I had a back-up copy. I've installed
everything and then went to back-up and brought back all the stuff from
/etc/samba and /var/cache/samba and all /etc/cups and /etc/printcap*.
Aparently samba is working corectly: All user/machine accounts are in place
winbind OK... It's just that although I've restored the /home/printers

Linux as an AD Client questions
Hello --
I'm trying to come up with a seamless way for our Red Hat 8 ( and
eventually, Mac OS X ) users to access network resources that are shared
via our Active Directory. I'm having a very rough time figuring out
exactly how to approach this.
Our requirements (ie, pie in the sky wish list) are:
1. when logging on to Gnome/KDE via gdm, users must be able to use their
