PDC - initial profile creation
I can now login to my domain from an XP Pro client, as a normal user. Only problem is, I get this: Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem

Win XP Pro / Linux PDC
Hi all, I'm trying to configure Samba as a PDC. I'm running Debian Woody, hence Samba version 3.0.0final-1. We have no Windows servers anywhere on the network (yay!). I have done an smbpasswd for root, and add machine script is setup (see attached smb.conf). From the XP Pro workstation, when I fill in the domain name, log in as root, and click ok, I eventually get: "The following

smb-ldap or not to smb-ldap
Hi all, We are deploying a Linux server and desktops for a customer. We will have the users and groups in LDAP on the server, and files shared via NFS. However, one never knows if Windows desktops will be needed in the future. Is it a good idea to add users with smb-ldap even if samba is not initially used, as adding the samba attributes to an existing LDAP database is painful, and the

Problem over VPN
Hi all, Samba 3.0.14, Debian Sarge. I've asked on IRC but didn't get a response. I am having problems dragging files to my Samba share in Windows XP, over an IPSEC VPN. The file in question is a simple small text file. I have no problem directly creating and editing a file on the share. Here's the log: [2005/09/18 21:51:05, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_with_timeout(321)

domain admin issue
I have a new Debian testing machine running the Debian Samba 3.0.5. Everything seems OK except that I cannot get users to have domain admin rights. I have Windows XP workstations. The workstations join and log onto the domain fine. A "net groupmap list" yields: server:/home/tnolen# net groupmap list System Operators (S-1-5-32-549) -> -1 Replicators (S-1-5-32-552) -> -1 Guests

Problem with groupmap
Hi, I recently changed the domain name of a Samba 3.0 PDC. the groupmap list has duplicate entry. Output of "net groupmap list" System Operators (S-1-5-32-549) -> -1 Replicators (S-1-5-32-552) -> -1 Guests (S-1-5-32-546) -> -1 Domain Guests (S-1-5-21-710777483-87660309-4190662462-514) -> nobody Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-2549707708-1625086035-54168507-512) -> -1 Domain

LDAP integration
We're into our new server build. We have built Samba / LDAP servers before, but never a PDC. I'm not sure that this question is PDC-specific though. What is the difference between smbldap-useradd, and adding a user to the LDAP database normally e.g. with cpu useradd? Are smbldap-tools needed for new installs, or only where an existing Samba database is being migrated to LDAP? What is

LDAP user
This follows on from the previous questions. I noticed that smbldap-tools With lines like ldap user suffix = ou=Users in smb.conf, should we change Users to People if that's how our LDAP database was set up, or do Users and People generally mean different things in LDAP?

Migrating same domain
This weekend, we're replacing a customer's Windows 2003 server with a Samba box. They lost their Windows media and we can't reset the administrator password, so we can't even login to the server to examine it. The best we can do is to boot Knoppix and copy the filesystem onto an external USB drive, to recover their files. We're not sure how we will recover their Exchange mail

Domain admins not getting local admin rights
Hi there, I switched servers yesterday. The old server was running 2.2.7a-1 on RedHat 8.0. The new server is 3.0.8-0.pre1.3 on Fedora Core 3. I did the migration by copying the following: /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/shadow /etc/samba/* I then copied /home and fixed all the permissions on stuff. I then started up samba on the new server, and unplugged the old one. Most everything went

Upgrading from 3.0.23 but group_mapping.tdb is empty on current config
Hi all, I've done a serious amount of reading around this but I still can't figure out the implications of what I'm seeing. I have inherited a CentOS 4 Samba 3.0.23 PDC & file server for 40 hosts that has been through the wars. It is standalone and stable and uses the smbpasswd file authentication backend, however I need to upgrade for Windows 7 support. I intend to build a

The user I'm trying to add is already in the unixgroup that's mapped to the NTgroup. Does any one know

Samba cannot find group in ADS
Hello everybody, I have a Samba 3.0.7-Debian setup and joined a W2k ADS-domain. A User is put in "SambaUsers" as his primary primary group. I can create files from XP client that belong to user in "SambaUsers" The user is successfully authenticated by samba and can access his profile. I want him to be able to access the share "p" on samba. Without "valid

matching UIDs to RIDs when converting from Windows to Samba
I have a bunch of Windows users using a Win2k server as a PDC. I want to move all the server functions to a Samba server without disturbing the users in any way. The client machines are all Win2k, using local profiles. Samba insists on algorithmicly generating the RID from the UID, so the Windows user, after migration, gets a new SID and loses contact with their local profile. In fact, they

Domain Admin with tdbsam on 3.0.2a
Firstly I apologise for the length of this query but I am hoping that if I document everything I did someone might respond / be able to help. My Configuration is Samba 3.0.2a as a PDC on Redhat 8. I cannot for the life of me get the "Domain Admins" functionality to work I am hoping that another set of eyes can shed some light on this problem as I have now spent 41 hrs googling /

extended error
Hi all, This is happening on a Samba 3.0.1 PDC-controlled domain, so I'm not sure if the issue is Samba-related. If not, perhaps somebody can point me in the right direction. One of my users has a printer connected to his Win2k PC (name UPSTAIRS-SMALL). Printing to it from another (WinXP) workstation fails miserably. I tried to go back to first principles and go Start->Run

Problems with GID Samba 3.0.0 Beta2 Debian Testing
Hello, I've got a somehow weird problem with the primary GID of samba users. passdb backend is tdbsam. when I connect to the samba server my gid is set to 2147483404 instead of 1002 (domainusers). The GID 1002 ist configured as my primary group in /etc/passwd. This also happens with other usernames. After deleting group_mapping.tdb this worked for some hours but the error came back.
