password synchronization - smbpasswd for ordinary users
I have Samba 2.2.3a running on Tru64 Unix v4.0f (?)
I have Win NT4.0 (sp6a) as our local PC OS.
I have created a Samba password file for users.
I've tried several permutations, but currently I have
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
unix password sync = yes
username map = /../../../usermap.txt
I also have standard password encryption on the NT side, i.e. not plaintext.
If I sync

non-root users cannot use smbpasswd...
...we are running a samba-2.0.6 server on a Sun
E3000, to provide file and print service (but not
logon service) to users on PCs. It works fine
except for an enormously annoying problem:
ordinary (nonroot) users are not able to change
their own samba passwd. When a user invokes
smbpasswd he or she gets the following response:
euler$ /usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd

Changing passwd as ordinary user
Dear all,
when I try to change my password as ordinary user using "smbpasswd", I get
the following error message:
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The
specified password is invalid.
I'm sure my old password is correct and the new password also.
If I change the ordinary user password as root, everything works fine...
I would appreciate your help,

Non-root users cannot use smbpasswd
I've searched the archives for an answer to this
problem, and yet nothing that works seems to have
been posted. I've seen it posted many times
In my particular case, I'm running
Samba 2.0.6 on Solaris 2.5.1, configured with the

--with-syslog options. I also have samba set up
as a PDC, and that seems to be working fine. A

smbpasswd backend, group-per-user, and primary gid not a domain group
After changing from 2.x to 3.0 I get these messages:

get_domain_user_groups: primary gid of user [fred] is not a Domain group !
get_domain_user_groups: You should fix it, NT doesn't like that
I understand why this is: fred's group needs to be mapped like so
net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=<fred's

build_sam_account: smbpasswd database is corrupt! affecting samba group mapping?
Hi,
when using
pdbedit -L <user>
we get an error
> build_sam_account: smbpasswd database is corrupt! username <user> with
uid <uid> is not in unix passwd database!
> Username not found!
This is because a user is not - as it says - in e.g. /etc/passwd.
Does this affect the functionality of group mappings in the way that this
doesn't work with the mapped unixgroup

Removing the user account from the smbpasswd file
Hi
I am Jasmine CHYE from Singapore. I had been working and using on the
SAMBA since OCT '99.
Right now I was writing an application to create SAMBA user account. My
application goes like this:
First I create a UNIX user account using the "useradd ...".
Then I create the SAMBA account using the "smbpasswd -ae userid".
I understand that when creating the SAMBA account,

DOMAIN level security with smbpasswd???
I'm a bit confused on several points of the security infrastructure of
Samba. First, and simplest, why (and is it necessary) do we need to
keep a smbpasswd file when the Linux/Unix passwd file could be suffice?
I like the idea of mapping particular users to a given UNIX account via
the username map option, but I see no reason in specifying a separate
password file for these same UNIX users.

Announce: KDE User Manager does smbpasswd.
Hi,
I'd like to announce a beta patch to the KDE user manager (kuser)
that integrates the management of the smbpasswd encrypted password
file with the existing password file.
The eventual target audience is administrators installing Samba
based PDC's, or other applications where an encrypted smbpasswd file
needs to be managed using graphical tools not too dissimilar

distinguishing mapped urls from ordinary action urls
I want to present different view depending on the url.
example below:
http://myapp/start/show?url=xZq
http://myapp/xZq
both addresses are controlled by a single controller and the same action.
the second url is only mapped in routes.rb
how can I distinguished the mapped url and present a slightly different view
in it?

unix password sync doesn't update smbpasswd file!
Hi all,
I'm using 2.2.3 on FreeBSD 4.5 RELEASE and trying to get
'smbpasswd' to change the encrypted password and the UNIX password
(/etc/passwd).
I'm getting strange behaviour.
Having worked through debugging my 'chat script', I now have
the following situation:-
When unix password sync = yes
smbpasswd works, but only the UNIX password is changed

Password Syncronization with Mapped users
I'm not sure if this is supported or not, but I can't get it to work.
I'm trying to get the smb password and the unix password to sync for
mapped users. I have have 'unix password sync' turned on and I have the
username mapping file set up. When I change a users password in windows
(where the username is the same in windows and linux) the password
changes just fine. When I

create a new user in smbpasswd, I'm not asked:

GPO administration right on the station for ordinary user
Hai Marc,
But thats missing info.. :-(
Maybe its also a good thing to add just after the first picture on the wiki.
That the security filter on the GPO MUST have "authenticated users" or Domain computer group.
You decide.

GPO administration right on the station for ordinary user
Hai Marc,
Well first, no you did nothing wrong here.
This was fine when you wrote it, but after the BadLock Bug,
Microsoft change the way some policies are applied.
A good explaination here.
