Samba3 - small lan [2] - fstab & smbfstab
Hi,
This is the second of 2 emails
I have two essentially identical linux computers [east and west] both
running Samba 3.0.9-2.6-suse with Suse linux pro 9.1 on a two machine
lan - [east & west] connected by a hub.
I am using `The Official Samba-3 HowTo & ref guide by Terpstra et al' as
my samba reference.
I am not clear which fstab to use.

cifs mounts in smbfstab
Hello,
I have the following in /etc/samba/smbfstab;
//msserver/share /mnt/smb-share cifs
file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,credentials=/etc/cifsusers/admin,rw
However, when using 'mount /mnt/smb_dir' I get;
mount: can't find /mnt/smb_dir in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
Using 'mount -a' doesn't mount either.
If I use "smbmount /mnt/smb_dir" I get;

users can't write to a subset of mounted directories
Hello
I am connecting to an NT server via a Linux client. I am mounting the drive on
the client via the following in smbfstab:

It works fine except the local user uid=1000 cannot write to certain
directories. The initial directory (//server/Users) is writable by

update rysnc 3.0 on ubuntu 7
I am runninng rsync on Ubuntu. It was installed using apt-get install rysnc.
I note that the package has not yet been updated to rysnc 3.0.
I would like to update using the tar but I am confused how to update the
existing installation.
On this machine, I am mainly using rsync to send to a cwrsync server (which
I have updated already). Can I just overwrite the rsync executable?
Any help

The users come via winbind. In the smb.conf the entry for the

For this machine we have a backup server rsyncing everything over. Now

3.0.2a: SID, User Enumeration
I'm runninng samba 3.0.2a on a few machines, ADS security mode, domain
member roles. I throw nessus at it, and it can fetch the SID and then

weird samba bug? some files from shares sometimes missing..
Hello, well, i have a weird problem:
i mounted a share, shared on winxp, on my gentoo linux box via mount -t
smbfs.. everything seems to work - seems. When i started to backup files
with rdiff-backup, i noticed that it reported about new and deleted
files, yet those were never deleted and are still present on the source
share on the windows machine. I thought it might be a bug in

Trouble mounting a windows share from Linux

NT domain. Everything is going well except that I cannot seem to figure out
how to connect to a windows home directory on a Win2000 server. Here is the
scenario:

Each user has modify permissions to their share

Mounting Samba shares under KDE 3.x
Hi,
I'm trying to mount the samba shares into my SuSE 9.2 workstation, with
no luck. Our server is in production, so there's nothing wrong in our
samba server. But I can't mount my shares under KDE.
Doing it with mount -t smbfs gives me a lot of Time Out errors, and the
mount is unable to show any files. Seems that the smbfs module is broken
in the 2.6.8 kernel. I don't know

small lan - novice
Hi,
John, thanks for replying.
I am fully aware that this is a volunteer effort and do appreciate it
very much. I really didn't expect an automatic answer - I was suggesting
an automatic response which could indicate the objection[s]?
I have downloaded the S3be `book' and ordered it from amazon.
I was puzzled by your comment:
`Please do not refer to smbfs's friends as Samba. The

problems with auto mounted share from Macintosh server on SuSE Linux
I recently switched from using Redhat Linux 9 to SuSE 9.2 Pro and am
having problems with an auto mounted share served from a Macintosh
running Mac OS 10.3.6. I can read from the share without problems.
However, writing to it is a different story.
All the files/folders on the share are owned by janee in the group
janee and have rw owner and group permissions. I've tried playing with

Authentication Problem on Sun Solaris 8 and SSHd2
I am running SSH on a number of servers but none use SSH for anything
but admin login. I am thinking of switching all users to it (for obvious
security reasons) but I have had a rash of problems lately. The first
was the 'Bad Packet' error which no one seems to care about or know the
answer to why it suddenly appears on 2 servers while other servers

smbfs: directory listing with duplicate entries
Hello,
smbmount from smbfsx-2.04b-1
kernel 2.2.7
I got a little problem with smbfs. Everything works fine, but sometimes
i get doubled directory entries (not all of them). I turned debug on in smbfs
and it looks that the doubled items come from NT server (4.0 server SP5 (PDC)).
Listing from smbclient is fine.
Here is an example from ls -l on smb share:

I have so many problems with samba on one PC with SuSE 9.1 on.
This PC is on a local area network with another PC with SuSE 9.0 on it

My 9.1 PC has an ASUS P4S800 motherboard and I use the integrated
Asustek sis900 ethernet lan configured as eth0 with the sis900 module.

novice - samba3+; suse linuxpro9.1
hi,
I thought it would be easy and over quickly - it has been anything
but...
I decided to test and use Samba 3.+ on my Suse linux pro 9.1 lan but
cannot get it to work and need some help/guidance.
I have two essentially identical linux computers [east and west] and I
have both of them as both server AND client. At a later date, after
this `simple' lan works, I plan to add a ms portable
