Samba 3.0.1 from samba.org shows "bgmilne" as username
When I attempted to "rpm -i samba3-3.0.0-1.1mdk.src.rpm" this morning on
my Mandrake 9.2 box, I got an unusual message that doesn't make sense.
It said, over and over (thirteen times total):
WARNING: user bgmilne does not exist - using root
When it went back to root prompt, I did an "updatedb", but nothing for
"samba-3" is found when I did the urpmi request.

Is Samba 3 stable for Mandrake 9.2?
Not to be the annoying child, but I have found myself uniquely annoyed
that I can't update RPMs that include Samba 3, and I'm not certain if
that's because it's even ready for Mandrake 9.2. Does anyone have a
bead on this? Should I just go back to 2.2.8 and wait for the stable,
or can someone point out a URL that has a stable 3.0 on it?
Thanks

Samba 2.2.8 doesn't allow to write to group share
Two issues, and I'll discuss them both:
I created on my NT4 domain a group called "branch99". They're a "local
group" as far as NT is concerned, and it has two members; myself, and
another fellow down the hall. My end quest is to create a share on a
Mandrake 9.2 box running Samba 2.2.8, and have it permit or deny file
access based on NT's typical discretions.

"Printer settings couldn't be saved. Access is denied" problem on Samba 2.2.6
Hi Samba gurus,
I need your help for the problem of denying the change of the print
driver settings on samba. I have no any clue of this problem. Thanks for
any comments and tips.
Our institution has a windows 2000 active directory domain; I joined my
test samba 2.2.6 on a Linux box into domain as the file/print member
server. All the file sharing worked fine, but when I tried to upload

2k and 9x connect and print, XP won't
Good day!
I am running Samba3 on a Mandrake 9.1 box. Right now, I have "security
= user", but am not using any password authentication yet. I have 95
and 98 computers that can reach the shares available and print to the
installed printer, and even a Windows 2000 user can do all of this.
However, an XP computer I have can't go there. I double-click

strange locks
Hi,
I added these lines to smb.conf:
kernel op locks = false
op locks = false
strict locking = true
so I could see some locks from the unix level.
It worked sorta, I see the locks for big files
(but not the locks I was expecting), but for little
files it shows nothing:
# ./lock_list /opt/testsambashare/mattest.doc
# ./lock_list /opt/testsambashare/contents.doc

Users can create, but not delete files.
I have an ubuntu 8.10 server that is authenticating against active
directory (Win2k3) and acting as a fileserver. I used likewise open
to setup the AD authentication. If a user creates a file in a
directory that he doesn't own, he can modify the contents of the file,
but not delete or rename it. The group permissions should allow the
user to do this. If the user owns the directory,

Messages in Logwatch / Long usernames
Every day I get emailed Logwatch reports with several entries of the
following type. I've tried googling for these entries and found nothing
that indicats if these represent any particular problem. We did not have
these messages before and nothing really changed other than some RedHat
updates. The system generally runs fine (~170 users) with only the
occasional authentication glitch.

Cannot change File Attributes
Hi list,
i've upgraded Samba 3.0.14a to 3.0.20b (debian package) and ran into
following problem:
I cannot change the file-attribute (read-only, hidden, archive) from a
file via the windows explorer as an ordinary user. The error "access
denied" occurs.
The file has following permissions on Unix:
-rwxrw---- 1 root Massen 0 2005-10-28 08:17 Neu Textdatei.txt

Saving MS Word Documents
Okay,
I know this has come up before and before being chastised I spent a couple
hours reviewing the archives and could find the messages on it.
I have a user who when he attempts to save a MS Word Document (test
file.doc) to a samba share gets the following error:
Word cannot complete the save due to file permission error.

DST is coming nigh - HELP!
Tomorrow morning my Central Europe will try to steal an hour of daylight
by adding an extra hour at 2 am. This event will reintroduce an old but
trivial show-stopper for the broader use of Samba. Microsoft has, perhaps
intentionally, redefined the summer/winter time reckoning and just
acknowledged in a KB article that, yes, MS Windows don't show the correct
time, but they show the wrong

rsync is concatenating the files together
I am seeing a really odd problem with Rsync 2.6.2 and 2.6.3. I am trying to
rsync a directory containing some 2gb files from a Solaris 9 NFS server to
a Solaris 10b69 NFS client. Rsync is running on the Solaris 10 client.
Here is the source directory as seen from the client:
Source directory:

rsync fails to sync files
Hi,
I'm seeing a weird problem with rsync 2.6.9 protocol version 29 on
Debian Sarge. When copying a file from one location to another between
two Debian boxes, if destination includes a file with same size and
name, rsync fails to see that they are not exactly the same file.
The situation originates from copying a file to a place which is
periodically rsynced onwards, and the rsync

File creation permission issue
When users create a file on this share, the files are created with
permission's equal to 764 (rwxrw-r--). I want the permission's to be 760
(rwxrw----). How can I accomplish this for this share? Here is my .conf
for the global and this share. My version of SAMBA is 3.0.20b-3 on
openSUSE 10:
Thanks in advance,

MS Word 97 and Samba 1.9.18p10
Hello all,
We're having some odd issues with samba and MS Word (And presumable the
rest of the office suite, but I haven't checked) running on NT 4.0 sp3.
MS Word doesn't seem to obey the umask settings:
create mask = 0775
directory mask = 0775
When a new word document is created, it is given -rwxrw-r-instead of the
-rwxrwxr-x I'm expecting. I'm not sure whats happening

Samba 4.6.2 does not inherit setgid bit (anymore)
Hi Vincent,
have you found a solution that makes "force directory mode = 2770" able
to apply to new created folders ?
I have a similar problem:
if I set by hand (eg. chmod 2770) the folder A and then I try to create
an X element into that folder through samba I get the result needed (
group of X become overriden from parent folder A ) but the problem is
that the new element X not
