ANN: treeconv-0.1 -- in-place charset conversion of filenames
I am proud to announce the availability of treeconv, a program designed
to do in-place charset conversion of filenames.
It was programmed in order to convert the files stored at a customer's
system from "cp850"( Samba 2.x ) to "utf8"( Samba 3.x ) charsets
when upgrading Samba at the fileservers.
Dependencies: g++ ( both 2.95 and GCC 3.3.x are proved to work )

Character Set Conversion Problem in 3.0.1?
Environment: Red Hat 9.0 x86 Samba 3.0.1
Compiled with: --prefix=/usr/samba
--with-lockdir=/usr/samba/var/locks --with-automount --with-pam
--with-quotas --with-acl-support --with-smbwrapper
I have been using Samba 2.2.x, and have files and dirs with umlauts
(specifically, o's with two dots over them, as in Bj?rk) which display
fine in Windows mounted shares. These same files/dirs show up

Codepage conversion between 2.2.8 and 3.0.14 - what's 2.2.8 default charset on disk?
I have to upgrade a 2.2.8a (Debian) installation to 3.0.14a (Debian
too). I have quite everything clear but I am afraid I will get into
trouble with the filename encoding on disk.
The current samba installation has no explicit codepage declared for the
file system, and running "testparm" gives only these settings (which are
default) for codepages and charsets:

[PATCH] test-charset-fidelity: allow to skip testing specific FSes
Allow to skip testing the filesystem "foo" if the environment variable
SKIP_TEST_CHARSET_FIDELITY_foo=1 is set. This way it possible to not
test one or more filesystems without disabling the test altogether.

Help request from non-expert: mounting a samba drive with the right charset for accented filenames
Hi all,
I hope someone might be able to offer me some advice. I have a NAS
box, a QNAP TS-109 which runs a version of Debian Linux. It has a
local ext3 drive, and I also smbmount a network drive on it (a Lacie
ED mini which I have tried formatted as both ext3 and FAT32 without
solving my problems).
My problem is that I am unable to correctly rsync files with accented
characters in the names

Charset conversion problem on OS X (Fwd: Ogg and FLAC meta-data on OS X)
Greetings,
There is currently an open bug report for vorbis-tools, but also
affecting the Flac tools supplied by Xiph on the OS X platform (which
I suspect uses the same code): accented characters are corrupted
during read/write, to the effect that manipulation of track metadata
that includes accented characters result in the corruption of the
involved fields.
I contacted the Xiph developer

scandinavian letters or charset problem?
Hi!
This teamware mailclient (teamware.com) that we use at the office has
problems adding files as attachments from our Samba 3.0.2a share. The
attachment file browser sees the files but fails to add them as
attachments (with an error message: "valid.stf - file not found"
regardless of the file name in question). I tracked this thing down to
scandinavian letters (if your mail

redirect_to is changing my webpage charset
Gents,
I just figured out that redirect_to do something with the HTTP headers.
Specially the Content-type and charset.
I mean:
I got diferent encodings (charsets) if I use
http://myapp.com/welcome/index or http://myapp.com/welcome/
Can anyone tell me how can I solve that?

Font / charset encoding problem?
I have successfully installed and launched Sibelius (music typesetting
software) on linux (with codeweavers preview 4, w/ a fake_windows install).
It works fairly well, and would probably deserve a 4 on the app database.
Except for the fonts, which kind of defies the purpose of a typesetting
software! Here are the symptoms and some log activities :

don't need any more fonts.

mac osx charset on linux
Hey there,
After searching for quite some time I'm finally just going to ask the people
who know :)
I'm having trouble when listing the files on a samba share that's hosted on
a Mac OS X 10.4 server. The client is an Kubuntu Dapper Linux machine.
This happens only when using smbmount (smbfs) and not when I use Konqueror
with smb:// . The problem is that files with certain characters

Long filenames and 8.3 conversion
Hello List,
Can anyone please help explain how Samba handles long
filename conversion to DOS 8.3 tilde format?
I have a client with a Windows app that works great when using
8.3 type filenames. When an attempt to use long filenames is
made, the files are created great and the data is there. But
when the app builds the index and attempt to retrieve the data
file is made, the wrong file is

is support for non-ASCII filenames in rsync complete?
Hi there
Over the years there's been many people saying how files with non-ASCII
charsets got their filenames "corrupted" moving between different
systems. So I'm wondering what the current state is with rsync-3.06+?
ie I want to use rsync-3.06+ to backup WinXP+ (and MacOS?) filesystems
by using native versions of rsync clients to a remote Linux-based rsyncd
process. If I do

dbi, rodbc, rmysql, charset problem
Dear List
In my short life as a beginning R-user i've encountered a following
problem that i'm unable to solve myself:
I have a database in MySQL containing table and field names as well as
some data containing Polish accentuated characters (like ????),
utf8-encoded. It works just fine with just any external query browser i
can find, jdbc, odbc, native, whatever. Also mysql is happy

Conversion error: Illegal multibyte sequence
Hello list,
I've noticed this problem for a few years now, I think. I see it popped
out now and then in discussions. But they always end before a solution
is given.
So let's try one more time :-)
I have plenty of UTF-8 named files and directories. It's UTF-8 all
round, I don't use anything else, so I have no doubt the byte sequences
are correct in the filesystem (I happen to
