Samba running as PDC and BDC
I am in the process of investigating whether it's viable to replace our NT server domain with a linux server domain using SAMBA. The key is if Samba can act as a PDC, with other Samba BDCs in remote locations. Is this possible? ---------------------------------------------- Gabriel Matthews gabriel@cinergycom.com Network Support Cinergy Communications When life hands you

Question about new Samba 3 rc4 and BDC
I have looked a bit through some of the archives for this list, and I have caught different ideas on this matter.. I've also read through the HOWTOs on how to do this stuff, but I haven't received the same results that I was expecting, so I need someone to help me out a bit, give me a definite YES or NO and if YES, how? I have the latest release candidate of samba 3 installed on redhat-9.

Idmap + LDAP + winbind: our first BDC - doubts about idmap ranges and winbbindd + Idmap dn
Hi, My doubt is about Idmap + LDAP + winbind, related do BDC + PDC. We are using Samba 3.0.33 (Slackware 12.0.0). Our layout is almost like this one http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/images/chap6-net.png, but we have more BLDGn than this example. Actually, we are taking ideas from http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/happy.html and from

PDC and BDC load-balancing
Hi there, I would like to know how Samba / Windows determines which domain controller should handle a logon request, and whether there is a way I can affect the process. Here's the situation: I have a school installation running a Samba domain, with a PDC (1.1GHz Celeron, 256 MB RAM) and one BDC (much smaller, 366 with 64 MB RAM), both with RedHat 7.1 and Samba 2.2.5. There are about 80

Decommissioning old PDC
I'm trying to decommission our PDC which is running on some older hardware and migrate it's functionality to one of our two currently operating BDCs for the domain. The three servers have nearly identical configurations with only differences in file and printer shares and a couple attributes like "wins support" and "domain master". They all have identical netlogon

Unable to change Windows password on Samba BDC
Dear Help, We are currently running Samba 3.0.22 on a distributed network/domain as a PDC (primary domain controller) and several as BDCs (Backup domain controllers) in our branch offices located around the country. At this point, the PDC is set up in our corporate office (where I'm located) and users have no trouble authenticating (via logging into windows and accessing shares) and also

some question about BDCs
Hi, I want to set up SaMBa PDC and BDC with LDAP. I read the TOSHARG2, but don't understand something: >Samba-3 cannot participate in true SAM replication and is therefore not able to employ >precisely the same protocols used by MS Windows NT4. A Samba-3 BDC will not create >SAM update delta files. Ok, I understand until that, but: >It will not interoperate with a PDC (NT4 or

PDC/BDC && "domain logons = yes"
Hello, I ran into a problem the other day where our NT PDC and BDCs starting flaking out. They all thought that there was another PDC on the network and so would not promote. After several hours of fighting with the NT servers, we checked a change that had been made to our smb.conf on our fileserver. Namely, the addition of "domain logons = yes". My understanding was that this

PDC/BDC Domain Logins Samba 2.2.7
We're about to start migrating from Windows NT 4.0 to a Samba controlled setup. I've got a question about the functionality of the Samba PDCs and BDCs. In my Windows setup I have three domains that are defined by geographic locations. Each of these domains "trusts" the other. In Samba 2.2.7, I can't have the trusts, so I'm looking at creating one giant domain that

Winbind not quite working yet
Hello, I'm trying to get Winbind to authenticate users that don't have local accounts on a SAMBA BDC. I have (3) BDCs (1) PDC running OpenLDAP 2.1.23 pass backend and Samba 3.0. These are on RedHat 8.0 systems. 3 BDC are also slave LDAP and 1 master directory server on the PDC. I went through the Samba documentation CH21 and made modifications to the BDCs and PDC as follows:

Basic questions regarding Samba capabilities
Hi people: I've been using Samba for a long time with some "basic" features like Samba working as a PDC, integrated with OpenLDAP, being a print server, among others, for a small number of "almost controlled" users (no more than 30 or 50 users). But now I'm interested to implement a Windows domain using Samba for a University with 6000-8000 users distributed through

Understanding Documentation about BDC in HowTo Collection
hi list&john, i read in the documention about BDCs: The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file |private/MACHINE.SID|. For all versions of Samba released since 2.2.5 the domain SID is stored in the file |private/secrets.tdb|. This file is unique to each server and cannot be copied from a PDC to a BDC; the BDC

RE : RE : Samba as a PDC / Windows NT 4 SP6a as a BDC
Thanks But this is for demoting a PDC to a BDC. I've done that already. What I want to demote my BDCs to standalone server. I'll give a try to upromote. Windows PDC vs BDC placement; who takes care of the bulk of domain logons?
Hey all, might be a tad bit off topic to samba, but not entirely unlrelated. Anyhow, as I understand it, the task of a BDC is to process most if not all of the domain logons before a PDC does so is it not? It has been my understanding that the BDC generally accepts and processes domain logons before the PDC does on a network to keep the load down on the PDC until such time as the BDC cannot

PDC & file server on same machine?
How much of a resource hog is a PDC? My understanding is that authentication is done vs a BDC if available. I configured my new file server as the domain PDC because I figured it would already have to run samba. I have two other machines configured as BDCs to serve as logon servers. I'm looking for opinions on whether I'm asking for performance problems by making my file server the

PDC and BDC: how to sync profiles
I was wondering how people sync the roaming profiles in an environment with a PDC and multiple BDCs. Are profiles better stored in another server (a member server) instead of the xDC? I could use rsync from the PDC to the BDC, but that doesn't work the other way around, i.e., when a user logs in via a BDC whatever changes they make won't go back to the PDC. Unless the profile is: - always
