dead samba process
Hi!
I am having trouble with a samba server version 2.2.5 on SuSe 8.1.
Very often my samba processes get to state D and can't be killed
anymore.
The clients seem to continue to connect and so I get even more dead
samba
processes.
These processes can't be killed, all I can do is reboot the machine.
I have looked on the internet, quite a few posts regarding that problem,

Group "Unknown" on first connect
Hi!
I have the following problem when connecting to samba servers from XP
and Win2000 clients:
On the first connect to the linux box within the Windows Explorer with
e.g. \\mycomputer
it is listed in the group "Unknown". If I close the Explorer and open up
again it is listed in the correct group with all the other windows- and
linux-pcs.
I am using samba version 2.2.5

netbios-ssn/tcp: unknown service
Sorry if this is such a basic question but I couldn't find anything about this in the FAQs/HowTos/Digest.
I've compiled samba-1.9.18p3 on SunOS4.1.3_U1.
When I tried to run smbd via inetd.conf (SIGHUP), I always get the following on the console.
inetd[590]: netbios-ssn/tcp: unknown service
I've edited the /etc/services to add:
netbios-ssn 139/tcp
And the /etc/inetd/conf with

Greetings all,
See below for postinstall and remove scripts for the above release for

Can't run SAMBA from inetd
I'm trying to start SAMBA from the inetd. I have added the port numbers
to /etc/services:
netbios-ns 137/udp
netbios-ssn 139/tcp
To my inetd.conf I have added:
netbios-ssn stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd
netbios-ns dgram udp wait root /usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd
After this I killed any samba-prosecces, and refreshed the inetd with:

INETD Question.
I'm currently running version 2.0.7 of samba(CIFS9000). I have HPUX 11.x
installed on the samba server. When I try to run this from inetd it doesn't
work. I can run a startup script that runs the smbd as a daemon and it works
fine. But if I try to run it from inetd it won't start. The previous version
of Samba 1.9.18p10 that I had on this server worked fine. Is this a bug in

Access denied from NT
Hi,
I have a problem in accessing samba server from NT
network neighbourhood. I can see the samba server icon
on neighbourhood. But while trying to access then it's
asking for user name & passowrd.
I am not using local user & password from unix box
rather it should be authenticated from NT PDC and
accordingly I have modified the smb.conf file. Here is
the sample of that.

Re; Samba 2.2.2
Hello Guys,
First off let me say thanks for your efforts on Samba.
Next I have a problem, I dled the samba 2.2.2 tarball and installed it
and now I am at the configuration stage. It says I have to add two lines
netbios-ssn lines to the inetd.conf file. Well, unfortunately there is
no inetd.conf. However there is an xinetd.conf file is that the same
thing and if so, what and where do I

Hi,
I tried to map solaris to PC running 3.1 or 3.11 or so. That PC
sees another solaris as it is mapped to it. No problem there.

I did "ps -aef|grep smbd" and see it not running. nmbd is running.

problems running samba on Caldera 2.3?
I have the default installation of samba (2.0.5) that came with Caldera OL

When I run the script 'samba start', I get the message "Starting samba:

Running smbstatus gives me the message "Couldn't open status file

Samba 3 startup
Hello,
I'd like to see if I can get some clarification on what is the preferred
method of starting the Samba daemons (note that we are using Solaris, not
Linux). This is something that I'm not able to find any explanation of in
any of the Samba 3 documentation that I've looked at so far. In Samba 2 I
would have the Samba daemons started up by the following in my /etc/inetd.conf:
