smbmount/kernel 2.4.2/Samba 2.0.7 - Unable to use large files/directories
Hi there. I'm having a very odd problem with samba. I have a Mandrake 7.2 linux distro, though I've compiled a 2.4.2 kernel for it (with samba support compiled in - not a module), and I've also compiled Samba 2.0.7. When I mount shares from my win98 machines, if I try to list a large directory or open a large file, the terminal freezes. I'm able to log in another, but if I

Interesting errors...
Greetings, About 2 months ago, we decided to backup our Oracle test servers via samba rather than nfs -- the backups were just taking too long using nfs. No problem mounting the remote file share to the server and the backup took about one-third of the time. Yep, worked good...and still continues to out perform nfs hands down. Problem is - I'm receiving errors on both of the test servers.

unable to ping windows hosts by hostname
Hello, On RedHat 9 with samba-2.2.7a-7.9.0, I am connecting to a windows network through a cisco VPN connection. When the vpn is established, I can make smb calls (for example, I can browse network objects using gnome-nautilus)... and I can explicitly resolve names; for example: wbinfo -N dheld3 (works) nmblookup dheld3 (works) however, a more general lookup fails ping dheld3

Horrible smbmount problem
Hello, I have a problem with smbmount between two Linux (both: RH 6.0, kernel 2.2.9, samba 2.0.4c) boxes. When I use smbmount, the share loads and I can read files just fine, but when I copy ("cp file") to the share, the first 512 bytes of the file are copied and then the copy just freezes there. Trying several times to kill -9 the process didn't work. I had to reboot the server.

What's Happening
Found these messages in /var/log/dmesg on a Redhat 7.1 machine running Samba 2.2.2 accessing a Win 2000 share. Actually, there are a bunch of tasks accessing the same share, complete with file locking, etc. Any docs on what that error code means? ...Thanks, ...Kenneth smb_get_length: recv error = 113 smb_trans2_request: result=-113, setting invalid smb_file_write: syndex/csafe.log validation

64-bit Windows advanced server 2003 hangs
I just had the unpleasant experience of crashing a production server _twice_ when trying to access a file share. The server is 64-bit Windows 2003 on an itanium3. My box is RedHat Linux 8.0 with Samba 3.0.0-2. Here's some messages from syslog: Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron automount[1037]: attempting to mount entry /dborg/POS Mar 19 09:13:58 hedron mount.smbfs[23153]: [2004/03/19 09:13:58, 0]

Permissions and authorities
Hello, We've just migrated from Netware to Samba and have only 1 problem that's affecting our users. When a user creates a new document in a directory the owner and group or both set to root. The directories are owned by a specific user and there is also a group associated with the directory. I was expecting that any new documents created would have the same user and owner as the

Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
A friend of mine is running Samba (samba-2.0.3-8) on a couple RedHat Linux 6.0 machines. He is sharing files bilaterally at work with a WinNT machine and at home with a Win9x machine. In both places, he is getting a large number of SMB error messages. I'm not sure whether these are from the smbfs (smbmount) or from the Windoze machines accessing the Linux drives, though I suspect the

Occasional problem with hanging SMB mounts.
Hello everyone. I have two linux servers* that each have four directories mounted as SMBFS shares from a Windows 2000 Server. For the most part, this set-up is working great, however, there have been occasional hiccups. Every so often, one of the servers, LINUX-ONE, logs a couple of Samba-related errors. The following is an example: Jun 30 06:30:45 mx-two kernel: smb_trans2_request:

About smbfs: smb_get_length error
Hi All: When I use samfs, sometimes I got the following messages, Mr. Google says this is because the windows client use the share, and the connection is "reconnected"! Does it right? How to ward off the error? Is there any potential problem if I ignore it? My actions are smbmount and smbumount some shares. Sometimes some shares are smbumount before they mounted (thus cause a

I always use this command ( mount -t smbfs //server/shared/ /mnt/temp -o username%password) for re-Mounting. But several days later... my machine keeps on restarting everytime we access the mounted

Save open access databases
Hi all, I don't have any MSAccess on my machines, so I can't test it, and I would like to backup or invalidate that claim: if i have an MS Access database open by several people on a windows share (say on a w2k machine), will it be a problem backing it up on a linux backup server mounting the windows share (while it is still open and written to by the windows machines of course)?
