Samba 3.0.1 from samba.org shows "bgmilne" as username
When I attempted to "rpm -i samba3-3.0.0-1.1mdk.src.rpm" this morning on my Mandrake 9.2 box, I got an unusual message that doesn't make sense. It said, over and over (thirteen times total): WARNING: user bgmilne does not exist - using root When it went back to root prompt, I did an "updatedb", but nothing for "samba-3" is found when I did the urpmi request.

Samba 2.2.8 doesn't allow to write to group share
Two issues, and I'll discuss them both: I created on my NT4 domain a group called "branch99". They're a "local group" as far as NT is concerned, and it has two members; myself, and another fellow down the hall. My end quest is to create a share on a Mandrake 9.2 box running Samba 2.2.8, and have it permit or deny file access based on NT's typical discretions.

OT - What are these crazy messages?
I'm just dying to know what the origin of these messages with the txt attachments is. I get quite a few here, and even some in other mailing lists. But they're all unique; the attachment filename starts with ATT (followed by four or five digits), and are 192 bytes long. The senders are often different. Anyone got a bead on this? Eric

readline problem under src-compiled R 1.8.x under Mandrake 9.2
R compiles very easily under Mandrake 9.2, with one exception: readline seems not to work. for some odd reason, in the configure script, rl_callback_read_char is set to no, so the R configure script does not use readline (I think this means it refuses to link readline into the executable, but I am not sure.) Now, MD 9.2 uses libreadline 4-4.3-7mdk (yes, it is installed), rather than

latest CVS on Mandrake 9.2 Mini ITX
All, wondering if you can help, I had a perfectly working Mandrake 9.2 box running on a via Mini ITX 5000/classic. Asterisk (zaptel and libpri) was built from CVS head around 22nd July 2005. I decided now was a good time to ghost it up....although humorous for you all suffice to say, I ended up with a partitionless box! Following the install script I had created I built an identical server to

When Upgrading Wine
So, version .16 has come out and I wouldn't mind upgrading. The thing is, I have to patch my Wine source code for a particular game. I guess I have to remove the Wine version I have now, patch the .16 and compile the source code? If there is another way, please let me know. Though, my main question is if I uninstall Wine, will it take thing installed with it; I mean, does .wine still exist

Attention Mandrake Users
In their inimitable style, in their 9.2 release Mandrake have included a version of Shorewall that does not support the kernel module naming convention in that release. I suspect that similar problems will occur if you upgrade your 9.1 installation. You have two choices: a) edit /usr/share/shorewall/firewall and replace this line: for suffix in o gz ko ; do with for suffix in o gz ko

Shorewall and Mandrake 10.1
When I installed Mandrake 10.1, I have no probelms with it''s configuration and usage. However, I wanted to build a custom kernel with support for my built-in sound chip - as I was unable to get the audio to work. After I rebooted the new custom kernel, shorewall broke - no iptables in the kernel, even though iptables were configured in: CONFIG_IP_MULTIPLE_TABLES=y

Mandrake 9.0 won''t ping ...
When installing Mandrake 9.0 with the higher security option you cannot ping any of it interfaces, localhost (127.0.0.1) included. All other connections to the system are fine, e.g. ssh, www, squid, etc. "shorewall clear" doesn''t help. Does anyone know how to turn this off for at least localhost and eth1?? Yours truly, Ben

X11 forwarding between from Mandrake(sshd) to Caldera(ssh) doesn't work!
I am having great difficulty getting X11 forwarding to work between my openssh server (Linux Mandrake 6.1) and my openssh client (Caldera OpenLinux 2.x). I get "X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication." on the Caldera box when I ssh into the Mandrake box and try to run any X app. If I make the Caldera box the server all is fine and works perfectly.
