Urgent information (legal stuff) about the future of SAMBA
I am sending you this email because of an incident which threatens the very existance of Samba. Earlier today, the bnetd project was shut down to the DMCA. Since bnetd is alot like Samba, I figured you would be interested. Bnetd is a server that pretends to be a battle.net server (starcraft multiplayer). This server was created by reverse engineering the communcations protocol, just like Samba

Samba and netgroups in LDAP
Hello,
Has anyone got netgroups working with Samba 3.0.14a where the netgroups
are stored in the LDAP directory? I'm using Solaris 9 and SUN's
directory server v5.2.
What I'm seeing is that samba goes through the motions of looking up a
host in a netgroup, but no query is seen by the LDAP server or on the
network and the host is never found in the netgroup.
Any help would be

"valid users" + ldap on Solaris 10 problems
Hello,
We have just migrated a server from sun solaris 8 to sun solaris 10. In
the old machine we had a Samba 3.0.20b and in the new one, we have samba
3.0.21, both compiled like this with no problems:
env LD_FLAGS="-L/usr/local/lib" ./configure --with-ldapsam --without-pam
--with-quotas --with-ldap --with-included-popt --with-acl-support
--with-libsmbclient
We share user's

Where do SIDs come from?
Hello,
I've got a potentially major problem:
I've recently changed from samba-TNG (vintage last February) which was
working tolerably well in our environment barring a few locking problems
and the ever increasing tdb files and memory footprint.
As our number of clients has passed 150, the amount of memory used on
our Solaris server became unsustainable and I took the decision to migrate

smbmount
I installed samba on a PC running SuSE 10.2, using the version from the
SuSE 10.2 repository (3.0.23). All very nice, except smbmount is
missing.
As I understand it, this would seem to be because the version offered
had not been compiled with the --with-smbmount option.
Is my interpretation correct? And if so, how can I fix things? Do I
have to download the source and do my own compilation

Where does Windows get the samba name to put into the Network Share name?
I have upgraded our sun server from samba 3.0.20b to version 3.2.4. If I
type "smb -V" on the sun, I get the proper version number of "Version
3.2.4". When I map a network drive from my PC to a share named "home1"
on the sun, the PC mount point is named "home1 on 'Samba 3.0.20b
(server)'. I have unmapped all drives and re-mapped them with the same
result.

DMCA and webcasting
Last year I arranged with my college radio station and ITS department to
webcast the radiostation using icecast. The webcast has been a wonderful
success so far. My problem now is not technical, but political. A few days
ago I recieved the following message from the station director:

it's funny.
I only started this so my ex-girlfriend on the other side of the world could hear a song (downloading mp3's was not possible for complex reasons but streaming audio was)
but goddammit i'm going to make this thing work if it kills me.

Possible change to group behaviour from 3.0.14a-> 3.0.20?
Hello,
I may be missing something, but it seems that there has been a change
between 3.0.14a and 3.0.20 which means that a user's primary UNIX group
HAS to be mapped to a valid NT group (i.e. the primary UNIX group in the
LDAP DB has to have the sambagroupmapping attribute and a SID). Can
anyone confirm this as a new requirement or am I being a bit stupid?
I'm using an LDAP backend with

Migrating Domain from TNG to 2.2.2: A cautionary tale
Hello,
We recently undertook to migrate our domain from samba-TNG to samba-2.2.2.
However, it did not go smoothly. One of the main reasons is that even
if you start 2.2.2 with the domain SID from the TNG installation, you
find that the users' RIDs are different. This is because samba-TNG
calculates the RID from the unix UID using the formula UID*4 + 1000
where as 2.2.2 uses UID*2 +1000.

The rates are in arbitration, and I doubt they will come out anywhere
near that amount. It just isn't feasible, even for large companies.

Problem adding printer drivers
Hello,
Environment: Samba-3.0.23c on Solaris 9 using LDAP (Sun DS 5.2)
I'm trying to follow the procedure in the Samba 3 HOWTO in Chapter 21 to
install printer drivers to the print$ share on the samba server. I've
got as far as extracting the drivers from a Windows machine and am
trying to register them with Samba using the rpcclient adddriver command.
The command I'm using:

Fw: share a folder rw, but not deletable?
Is there a way in UNIX to make a folder with read+write permissions for
some group of users, but only allow them to read and write to the
folder... not actually delete the folder itself?
I have some samba shares, and directories inside them that I want to
remain with their current structure and permission settings -- with many
similiar group-specific files inside each folder, but I don't want
