[OT] Fyodor terminates SCO nmap rights -- how about Samba?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
As you all may know Fyodor of nmap fame has terminated SCO's
rights to distribute namp with its products. See:
http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/02/27/1077676955381.html
I know this is off-topic, but I am interested in opinions
on the subject of SCO using Samba in it's products while they declare
the GPL is unconstitutional and invalid.

file permissions on home directories and admin user copying files to it
We want to copy files with the group in the admin list of the [homes]
share. The problem is that the copied files then are owned by root.
I know this is normal unix behavior. However we want the copied files to
be owned by the user of the homeshare.
I read the samba howto section "Users Cannot Write to a Public Share".
Although I want to set the owner on the home shares and not on a

samba 3.0 and freebsd 5.1
I've been working on getting freebsd 5.1 to be a member of and active
directory domain. I have everything up and running fine, but I'm
running in to a brick wall when trying to get nsswitch to use the
libnss_winbind.so I understand that nss is new in BSD, but I am told it
is supposed to work. Has anyone here got it to work right yet?
I have samba, winbind and kerberos working fine. I

FW: getent & winbindd on FreeBSD 5.4
I posted my original post to FreeBSD-questions@freebsd.org and since then
have had a running dialog with another poster. It now seems I am having
trouble with the NSSWITCH function. I am now reporting back to the Samba
list in hopes someone can help me out at this point.
Can anyone help me out here?

Unprivileged user can write to mbr
Hi,
I'm having trouble rationalizing the behaviour described below. Is this
a security-issue (bug) or a feature?
- An unprivileged user 'bztest' with read-only access to /dev/ar0:
%id
uid=1004(bztest) gid=1004(test) groups=1004(test), 5(operator)
%ls -l /dev/ar0
crw-r----- 1 root operator 4, 21 Nov 23 17:34 /dev/ar0
- Now, the device ar0 has the standard mbr installed:

Catch all for dovecot authentication?

So you want to setup a service where random spammer/hacker can trivially DDOS your system?
How many simultaneous 5GB streams can you handle? How much will your bandwidth bill be if you send 5GB a million times in a month?

Network_access_denied and no group in domain
Was: RE: [Samba] samba 3.0 and freebsd 5.1
Hi Aaron,
I deinstalled the 3.0.1 port and got the source tarball for 3.0.2a and
installed from there. I also swapped out 3.0.1 for 3.0.2 on the domain
controller when I discovered the second problem.
I can now use smbclient to log into a file share on the member server,
giving an " smb: \> " prompt but doing ls gives an error of:

idmap + ldap + nsswitch +winbindd
Hello,
I have a couple of questions regarding group mapping. I am working on configuring Samba 3.0.0 on FreeBSD with LDAP support.
1. Am I correct in that winbindd needs nsswitch to work? If so I would need to run FreeBSD 5.1 and not FreeBSD 4.x so that I had NSSwitch support.
2. If I am correct in question 1 is anybody running FreeBSD 5.1 with nsswitch with Samba 3.0.0 +LDAP successfully?

HowTo Chapter12 Group Mapping and LDAP
Hello,
I have a question about the documentation of the Samba Howto's. Specifically, I am not able to understand how group mapping ties into LDAP. I believe I understand the concept of unix to windows group mapping as laid out in chapter 12 as it relates a tdbsam, but get confused when dealing with a ldapsam back-end. There is a note listed " When the passdb back-end uses LDAP

[LLVMdev] [lld] LLD's software architecture (update)
Hi,
I've been following the changes in LLD's software architecture.
Recently a new file was added: Alias.h
In this file, the curret Atom set is extended with an AliasAtom.
While the change seems innocent enough, it has some nasty
potential. Simple.h and Alias.h are placed in the ReaderWriter
component. This is the 2nd component in the layering:

[LLVMdev] [lld] LLD's software architecture (update)
The inverted dependency of Core to ReaderWriter via Simple.h was already
present.
My idea was to fix the problem before it gets bigger.
My proposal would be to move Simple.h and Alias.h to Core. Similar to
UndefinedAtom.h etc.
It would be even nicer to make the naming consistent as well, since there
already is
UndefinedAtom.h
SharedLibaryAtom.h
etc
Maybe:
SimpleAtom.h
AliasAtom.h

course), i get a NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER error.
i can verify that my user DOES exist and that he belongs to the posix group

Catch all for dovecot authentication?
Hi
I'm aware that there are several good reasons not to do what I want, but
in my use-case it would be an interesting feature. So please no
discussions about the reasonableness
I have some spamtrap SMTP servers (postfix). Currently SMTP AUTH is
disabled. But as I daily have thousands of AUTH tries I thought it would
be nice to be able to accept any AUTH request from postfix in dovecot.

Migrating: tdb to ldap (Samba Classic)
Guys,
We have a Samba 4 PDC with TDB backend. We're now trying to a BDC so we
need to migrate from TDB to LDAP . I've read the Samba documentation which
says using tdb in both servers will cause issues. So the question is how do
we migrate from TDB to LDAP in the PDC. The setup we are going for is each
DC will have LDAP setup. The LDAP servers will then be replicated. Reading

For configuration:
