Open Comment to John Terpstra
John, It's great to see you on this list. I'm a Samba newbie and recently found your book, "Samba-3 by Example". I must say this is the best written "how-to" type of book on any subject I have ever seen. The various examples fit a number of categories and answered so many questions for me. I just wish similar books were available on other applications. I just

Encryption
Kevin, Firstly, you need to obtain the DES libraries. Then you need to tell the Samba Makefile that you wish to compile in DES encryption services and link with the DES library. Then in the smb.conf file you need to add to the [Globals] section: encrypted passwords = yes Then you need to create a separate smbpasswd file. Please read the documentation in the docs directory of the Samba source

Does 3MB/sec seem as fast as
John, I haven't done any direct performance testing, although I am planning on figuring that out now. (BTW, how is performance testing ran?) However, I can say that since converting over to the Samba PDC/File Server that the file transfer performance just feels much faster. Regards, Robert Adkins II IT Manager/Buyer Impel Industries, Inc. Re: FW: SAMBA+ACL+XFS
Paul, Your samba does have ACLs support built-in. Please check that your system has the ACLs support libraries. Since you are using kernel 2.4.x you need to have the bestbits acls support libraries installed on your machine. Check the documentation for XFS to see how to mount the XFS file system so it has ACLs support. You should manually be able to set POSIX ACLs using the setfacls utility.

patch for rpm spec problem
The following is a description of an rpm-based rsync build problem on my Redhat 7.1 system, and a patch that fixed the spec file. The problem occurred on several recent rsync releases, including 2.5.7: rpm -tb --define '_topdir /home/user/tmp/rpmbuild' rsync-2.5.7.tar.gz ALMOST works; it uses the spec file in lsb, not redhat/7.1. This spec file fails due to bad date format in one line,

Jonckheere-Terpstra test using coin package?
Is it possible to implement the Jonckheere-Terpstra test for ordered alternatives using the coin package: Conditional Inference Procedures in a Permutation Test Framework? I found jonckheere.test{clinfun}, but it uses a normal approximation when ties are present in the data. To make this concrete, I've include a small dataset.
