HowTo Chapter12 Group Mapping and LDAP
Hello,
I have a question about the documentation of the Samba Howto's. Specifically, I am not able to understand how group mapping ties into LDAP. I believe I understand the concept of unix to windows group mapping as laid out in chapter 12 as it relates a tdbsam, but get confused when dealing with a ldapsam back-end. There is a note listed " When the passdb back-end uses LDAP

Caller-ID name lookup via anywho.com
Hey all,
Did I see something on here about using an AGI script to do reverse
lookups via anywho.com? I have a PRI that only gets caller-id number and
no Alpha.
TIA,

Netware 5.0 to Samba/LDAP migration
I'd like to migrate a Netware 5.0 serve to Samba and LDAP. I'm
wondering how I might export the usernames, passwords, and perhaps
group memberships to the destination LDAP. If I can get the data into
LDIF form, I'm okay from there. Does anyone know how the passwords in
Netware 5.0 are encrypted? I hope to bring them over, but reseting the
passwords is not out of the question (just

Repeat Review Request
Folks,
I like criticism! Please give me lots of it - particularly in respect of the
updated "Samba-Guide". It should now be up on the Samba mirror sites.
You can download it from:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
I have incorporated all feedback into this book. Did I get it right this time
or should I give up?
So far, not a word of feedback is deafening!
Is it

failure to add a machine to domain
We put together a samba 3.0.x server to replace an nt domain
controller 3 weeks ago when our nt servers were being hit by and
unpatched/unpatchable vulnerability in nt. we went through numerous
howto's and other documents. The net rpc vampire seem to grab
everything fine. However, now when we attempt to add a machine to the
domain we get a failure.

cannot login from some machines after upgrading from 2 to 3
Hi.
I've got a strange issue here. Some time ago (in march ;) I upgraded my
FreeBSD-6.0 Samba 2.2 to 3.0 (currently 3.0.24). After creating groupmaps
and doing all the other upgrade tasks, everything seemed to be alright.
However, it was not possible to login from some machines (getting error for
the wrong password). After disjoining and rejoining domain with these
machines, it was possible

group add and groupmap with ldapsam
hello,
trying to set up an pdc with 3.0.4 on solaris with openldap
creating groups and adding groupmaps does not work.
net group add asks the password for the ldap-manager, comes back without
any message, but the group does not exist after that.
if i try to make a groupmap without adding a wingroup first, the result
is the following (no question for the password!)
/usr/local/samba/bin/net

With a Samba 3 PDC, can I promote a Samba BDC to become new PDC?
I'm helping out a small office upgrade their NT 4 PDC to Samba. It's a small
office of 6 people, so tdbsam is being used. They keep having tape backup
issues
and other problems, so one of the reasons for the Samba migration is to allow
me
to SSH into their box and remotely administer it from home on
evenings/weekends.
Currently I'm testing the move using two dummy machines, and

samba roaming profiles not working
I've been at this for hours now and am still not getting it to work.
I've been through the lists trying to find an answer and so far as I can
tell, everything is configured OK. Obviously it's not, but I'm stuck.
I recently installed Squeeze on my home server, overwriting a Lenny
installation. I've been able to add my NT (Windows XP/Pro) domain
accounts back in and pdbedit

OpenSUSE 11.1 with OpenLDAP => some surprises (ldap.conf, nss-ldap.conf, nsswitch.conf)
Hi,
this has nothing directly to do with samba, but there might be some
people who try to use samba with (Open)LDAP on OpenSUSE 11.1 like me.
Between 10.2 and 11.1 the nss_ldap configuration has changed a bit.
The file which configures the access to ldap is now /etc/nss-ldap.conf
and seems to have the identical layout as the former /etc/ldap.conf.
Also needed is the "nslcd"

SLES 10 LDAP NSSWITCH
I am trying to run samba as a PDC on SLES10 with ldap backend for samba
accounts and local users vi nss_ldap. I can get everything working.
ldap backend is populated with smbldap-tools
samba talks to ldap (pdbedit -L confirms)
nss_ldap (getent passwd|group report correctly)
but if i attempt to restart ldap it will not bind to ports to listen. If i
remove ldap settings from /etc/nsswitch.conf

winbind and compat mode in nsswitch.conf
Hay together,
is the following entry in nsswitch.conf possible ?
passwd: compat
passwd_compat: winbind
I want to use the compat mode, so i can use the +/- semantic.
But in this case i cant login with username/password.
If i configure the nsswitch.conf like:
passwd: files winbind
The login works, but so i cant use the +/- semantic.
Andy ideas ?
Thanks,
Andy

Why would nsswitch.conf be needed at all ?
Hi,
I have setup a samba server as a domain member to share print queues.
As I'm doing print quotas, I need the users to be authenticated properly.
The setup works except that it appears that I need to add winbind to my nsswitch.conf.
This is kind of upsetting as I don't see a reason why I have to share windows users' namespace with my linux users base (mainly root and system users

nsswitch wins reverse lookup
I don't get reverse lookups (gethostbyaddr) over winbind wins to work.
Normal lookups work and also wbinfo -I gives back a netbios name for an IP.
my entry in nsswitch.conf is hosts: files dns wins
(dns reverse lookups ar ok)
The wins server is also samba and runs on another server.
Many thanks for any help...

Samba from source on CentOS 5 -- nsswitch woes
Samba users,
I have compiled Samba 3.3.6 from the pristine sources on samba.org on a
CentOS 5 machine. When I compiled Samba, CentOS's samba-common package
was installed and specifying 'winbind' in /etc/nsswitch.conf allowed
winbind to supply user information. For the sake of cleanliness and
removing old libraries, I removed the samba-common package. Now,
specifying

openssh and nsswitch integration in FreeBSD
Hello!
I'm working on openssh and nsswitch integration in FreeBSD. I am lucky
to participate in Googles' Summer of Code and openssh+nsswitch
integration is the part of my project. I've almost completed the patch.
I'd like to describe some details here. I'll be glad to correct or
change some things if you wish.
The idea is to replace system-wide known-hosts file with
