Multiple instances of /usr/bin/smbd -D
Hi,
I'm new to the list, so "hello everybody" ...
I have a (big) problem wih my new PDC under samba with ldap auth. When
I start a new session, samba launch multiple instances of smbd for
this new user in 5-10 minutes ... The system is very slow on the
client and finish to crash and need to close the session. But, when I
close the session, the smbd processes aren't

Bastille-linux
Has anyone got Bastille-linux running on Centos-5.6?
http://bastille-linux.sourceforge.net claims RHEL5 support but I ran
into problems running it on a Centos 5.6 test system.
First I had to "ln -s /usr/lib64/Bastille /usr/lib" just to get it to
run at all. Then I tried faking /etc/redhat-release with
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6
... but I get this (why would it want

Asterisk and Bastille
Has anyone also run Bastille on the Asterisk pbx?
Here's the link: http://www.bastille-linux.org/
It's a Linux hardening add-on. I was wondering if it'd mess up my
Asterisk installation if I also installed Bastille, if it was a good
idea to install it and work through the problems that may arise - or if
it's not necessary.

Your experience with os hardening tool - Bastille?
Hi All:)
I would like to start using a tool for automating of os hardening. I found
some informations about Bastille. One things which attracted my attention
is that in http://bastille-linux.sourceforge.net/news_updates.htm the last
post is from January 29th, 2012 :D
Is the tool ready to use at the moment with CentOS 6/7? Are there any
alternatives which you can recommend?
Thanks for all info

Samba / Winbind / LDAP - Can't access shares
Hi All,
I have the following setup. Samba/LDAP PDC, Samba BDC, Samba member
server, Win2K member server, 300 Win XP Client PCs.
I can access the shares on the PDC from all Win XP clients. I can
access the shares on the Win2K member server from all XP clients, I
can't however access any of the shares on the Samba BDC or Samba member
server from the XP clients.
LDAP is working fine and

Merlin Legend
I have a legacy pbx that I know nothing about. The PBX is a merlin legend
system (now owned by avaya). I have found information on the list that I
can use a 100D T1 card to bridge the PBX to an asterisk system. We are
looking to head this route as well as replacing are AUDIX VM system with
Asterisk. Has anyone done this that wouldn't mind sharing some of the
merlin specific setup?

FC5. Samba 3.0.23a Win XP Pro SP2. Cannot logon from XP to samba on Fedora
Hello,
I have just performed a yum update on my Fedora 5 machine, which I think included a samba update, and I cannot connect from WinXP to the shares defined on Fedora. When I select the samba server from WIndowsXP, a dialog box prompts for the userid and password. When userid and password are entered the dialog box just redisplays and I am not logged on, no matter how many time I try.

Home directory weirdness after upgrade from 3.0.33 to 3.5.6
Hi List,
I've just updated from Samba 3.0.33 to 3.5.6 on my Centos 5.5 PDC and am
having problems accessing home directories.
To allow a backout option I set up a new server, put 3.0.33 on it,
joined it to the domain and rsynced the home directories over with the
flags necessary to maintain the permissions and user/group ownership.
This worked and after completion I upgraded the new

Linksys 160nl
I'm finally biting the bullet, and replacing the 12-yr-old box that's been
my firewall/router with an appliance. First, does anyone have any idea
whether the WRT160 nl can use tomato? Second, is there any way, or any
reason, I could/would want to run bastille against the firmware?

PCI/DSS compliance on CentOS
I have a client project to implement PCI/DSS compliance.
The PCI/DSS auditor has stipulated that the web server, application
middleware (tomcat), the db server have to be on different systems.
In addition the auditor has also stipulated that there be a NTP
server, a "patch" server,
The Host OS on all of the above nodes will be CentOS 6.2.
Below is a list of things that would be

[ANNOUNCE] sch_ooo - Out-of-order packet queue discipline
Hello!
I like to announce sch_ooo, a new queue discipline that, attached to a
class (or a device, as root) reorder the packets that pass by delaying
some.
Example:
tc qdisc add dev eth0 root ooo limit 100 gap 4 wait 1100
This queue will create a pfifo with limit 100 and will delay
every 4th packet with 1100ms.
An stream of 6 packets like this: 1 2 3 4 5 6, generated by
ping will be reordered

subset function unexpected behavior
I was surprised to see this unexpected behavior of subset in a for loop. I
looked in subset.data.frame and it seemed to me that both versions should
work, since the subset call should be evaluated in the global environment -
but perhaps I don't understand environments well enough. Can someone
enlighten me? In any case, this is a bit of a gotcha for naive users of
subset.

[PATCH] packet delay scheduler
Okay, here is a very simple QOS scheduler that delays packets for 2.6.
It is good for testing, and might be useful for people who want to put
some class of traffic into a "penalty box".
Alexey''s tc command is really easy to extend to new disciplines. There is
a version which knows about this scheduler at:

[PATCH RFC] s390/virtio-ccw: Adapter interrupt support.
Handle the new CCW_CMD_SET_IND_ADAPTER command enabling adapter interrupts
on guest request. When active, host->guest notifications will be handled
via global_indicator -> queue indicators instead of queue indicators +
subchannel I/O interrupt. Indicators for virtqueues may be present at an
offset.

Hardening CentOS by removing "hacker" tools
Hi,
My boss asked me to harden a CentOS box by removing "hacker" tools,
such as nmap, tcpdump, nc (netcat), telnet, etc.
I would like to know which list of packages would you remove from a
base install. I would appreciate if someone could point me to a
"standard" way of doing this. I know there are procedures for
hardening a machine (I remember reading about Bastille Linux)
