unable to open passdb database.
I found many questions but no answers on the web.
I described my needs in earlier post, but now switched from security =
domain to security = server, and designated the AD domain server as the
password server.
It works as desired, i.e. I don't need smbpasswd any more, and if windows
users change their passwords by ctrl-alt-del, they can later use the new
password without coming to admins.

2nd try: sync of passwd and smbpasswd
Hello,
I'm using samba2.02 and shadowed passwords.
I' m on the way to migrate from plaintext to encrypted passwords.
Therefore I've set the parameter update encrypted to "Yes".
After everyone has logged in I will set this parameter to "No" again and
set encrypted passwd = Yes.
So far, so good. But three questions are remaining for me:
a) what to do with those who

weird winbind scenario
Hi, I have a box running Mandrake 8.2 and samba 2.2.4 on an NT
domain. smbpasswd -j says it joins the domain ok, I use the included
sys-auth-windbind file for pam, and the winbind entries are in
nsswitch.conf. Everything appears to be running, but when I try wbinfo -u
I get "Error looking up domain users". getent passwd only return the linux
accounts. Yet wbinfo -t returns

Samba 3.0.x and high processor utilication caused by /etc/passwd access
Hello together,
since upgrading on samba 3.0.x (issue happens with all 3.0. release) the
cpu-load on my samba PDC ist constantly near 100%. The cpu power ist
consumed by all running smb-processes. Systrace shows me that the smb
processes tried to access to /etc/passwd on a permanent basis. My question
is: Why tries samba to access etc/passwd so often and produces this high
cpu-load?

unix password sync problems!
I have been trying for hours to get the unix password sync going properly
with Samba 1.9.18p4 running on FreeBSD 2.2.5
I have compiled Samba with the ALLOW_CHANGE_PASSWORD option enabled.
I created the smbpasswd file as ENCRYPTION.txt states, and can set
passwords as root.
However, when a user tries changing their password, it doesn't work.
The error reported is:

samba and NT PDC
Hi,
as windbind is not supported on FreeBSD I hope to get some hints how to
solve the following issues:
I want to setup a samba (2.2.2) fileserver that just contains the
home-directories for all users of a Win-NT 4.0 Domain.
- How can I use the PDC for authentication instead of smbpasswd?
- I am looking for an easy way to auto-genarate a home-dir each time a new
Domain-user is created via the

I have a few different problems with samba 2.2.5 PLEASE HELP
I am running samba 2.2.5 on a Redhat Linux 7.3 box in a very large Windows NT domain, and I am running into a few different issues that make no sense to me.
1) For some reason my local clients can only get to the server by using it's fully qualified domain name. If you use the short name you receive a message about not being permitted to connect from the current workstation ( or something

Annoying winbind problem solved
I have been on the web for hours reading email postings about WINDBIND.
Here is the scenario. Samba 2.27 on Redhat 8, installed via the redhat
RPMs. the first interesting note was that there is no samba-winbind rpm.
It is a part of the samba-common.rpm in redhat. I have been using Samba
as a file server for quite some time. And 100% of my issues with it stem
from permission problems. So I heard

Unix password Sync
Ive just discovered that my previous email is wrong - the password sync
does in fact work under Solaris fine. What is happening however is that
when I create a new account, and call smbpasswd $user as root, it only
updates the SMB password and not the Unix password as well.
I though I could change my call to /bin/passwd in my new user creation
scrip with /usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a, but as

Password sync between W2k ADS and samba 2.2.x
Hi list,
is there any chance to synchronize passwords between
the smbpasswd of samba 2.2.x and the ADS of a win2000
server-system, but without using winbind ?
We don't want to use winbind, because with this we
have to change our running infrastructure of samba
from Samba-PDC with smbpasswd.
Does there exists for example a little tool that can
be run by crontab to sync the passwords ?
Hope

SAMBA+LDAP in a Workgroup
Hi,
This may be a dumb question (I'm new with this), but is it possible to use
SAMBA in combination with LDAP in a Workgroup?
All the manuals and examples I can find, are talking about Domains and
PDCs.
I have to set up a new Samba server and checkout LDAP but I'm not allowed
to change the Workgroup settings...
Now we use smbpasswd...
Is LDAP worth the effort and time?

Samba topography question joining with ADS?
I have the current situation and am trying to figure out which way is
the best approach.
Our organization has two domains, REMOTE and LOCAL
REMOTE - remotely located Active Directory, Windows 2003
LOCAL - local Samba 3.0.x, Linux server
I have computer labs and students that would like to login to REMOTE and
also local accounts that need LOCAL.
There is no way to have a WinXP station

How to sync /etc/smbpasswd with /etc/passwd ?
While we do sync our /etc/passwd whenever /etc/smbpasswd is changed via the
Samba sync option that does not seem to be possible the other way round:
I just want a /etc/smbpasswd generated from my /etc/passwd with the correct
passwords as used for the UniX login...
Is that possible ?

howto sync unix passwd & samba passwd?
Hi,
I'm using samba-3.0.28-0.fc8. I'm trying to build a file server for 100
users. I created a perl script that automatically adds the 100 users plus
their passwords with success. Now I'm having difficulty creating a script
using the smbpasswd command because passwords must be entered in stdin. I
also tried smbpasswd -s option but it asks passwd in stdin. Is there a way
that I can use

win password sync works, smbpasswd fails
Really odd behaviour on a Debian/Squeeze system: when users change
their password from within Windows, everything works fine (i.e.
passdb.tdb is updated and /etc/shadow as well via password sync, the
user can log in on both systems).
When I try to assign a new password via smbpasswd (or create a new
user, which causes the real problem), /etc/shadow is updated
properly (unix logins are possible),
