Automount, NIS, and Samba
I'm needing a strategy to accomplish the following:
We have AD, with Server for NIS working on the DC. I've got NIS
successfully working for login - or at least the client starts to login and
then complains about a lack of home dir, which is fine for now.
Each AD user has a directory on a fileserver, and I'd like these to be
automounted as the home directory. The share path to a

Linux clients can't logon to win2k shares unless domain admin
Disregard yesterday's message from me regarding dots in the username. I've
tried debugging and what I found was, unless I try to logon as a domain admin
to a win2k share, I get ERRDOS. The machine I'm using is joined to the
domain, and is using Samba version 2.2.5. Here's my mount command:
mount -t smbfs //server/share /mnt/smb -o username=[username]
where username is a user

mapping winbind users to nis uids and gids
Hello!
I've got users that access linux file server from Win stations using
Samba
and winbind authentication but also have AIX based workstations
accessing
the same server using nis authentication. They have the same username
registered in NIS domain and in Windows domain.
Is it possible to map winbind users (usually using uid & gid > 10000) to
nis
users, so user john

SAMBA ADS to NIS mapping
I am working in an environment with an HP-UX NIS that my Red Hat ES 4.x
system is using for Unix access controls.
My Red Hat system is serving as an NFS server for the HP-UX users who also
could be Windows users coming from a Windows Server 2003 active directory.
I have tested some configurations of SAMBA using winbind, but I don't get
the results I want. What happens when using winbind

Winbind: can't log in as domain user
Sorry about the lengthy post - I'm putting as much in here as I can in
hopes that someone can help me ferret out the problem.
Basic problem is that domain users can't successfully log into the
linux box. I'm trying to set this box up as an ltsp server
authenticating against our existing AD (although this is actually in a
test lab - I didn't really want to trash anything real

Winbind help?
Hi there.
I've posted a couple of winbind-related queries to the group over the
last couple of months, but have yet to get a reply. I've read the
official howto, as well as any other documentation I could get my hands
on, but am at an end to my personal understanding.
Is there a separate mailinglist for winbind users, or have I simply
asked a question nobody knows the answer to?

FreeIPA is a good option, generally. As best I understand it, it's
currently available in a Docker container for CentOS.

Replacement for NIS/NFS?
+1 for freeipa. It is an extremely well integrated domain controller with a
functionality similar to Microsoft Active Directory.
I would highly recommend setting up an AWS Virtual Private Cloud or
something similar and practice deploying freeipa a few times with a few
clients. It takes some understanding of the caveats and implimentation
before you will be able to deploy it successfully in a

Automount homes via smb question
I'm working on a client setup for thin-client machines in an AD with
about 2000 users. One of the requirements is that the server (an LTSP
box) not store each and every user's home directory. All of our users
have a Home Folder setting in their AD object, and I'd like to use
samba to mount that as "home."
What works now:
smbd, nmbd, winbindd. Compiled Samba 3.0 onto a

Need to restart ypserv to update the nis maps
Hi
I use NIS om my network (CentOS4.6). When an update on a map occurs
(home directory changed in /etc/passwd for instance), I run make -C
/var/yp/ and check the result on a client. On the client I use "ypcat
passwd" and find indeed that the update has propagated (the clients run
ypbind service). On the client I have configured /etc/nsswitch.conf with :

Bug or misconfiguration? Trying to add local user in NIS environment
Hello -
Is the following a configuration issue (which is usually the case) or a bug?
I''m trying to ensure a local user is present in a NIS environment
using the following recipie:
class dduck_add {
user { "dduckl":
ensure => present,
uid => 60030,
gid => "100",

winbind working... nis maps?
Hello Samba list!
I'm looking for quick verification that this will not work:
I already have a Gentoo workstation authenticating to a Windows ADS. I
can log in with my DOMAIN+username and it takes the domain password and
maps my uid into the proper range and all that good stuff. Samba is rad
like that.
However, I have a grip of various unix systems, and rather than spend

Replacement for NIS/NFS?
Hi,
Over the last few years, I've been using a rather bone-headed solution
to implement centralized authentication and roamin user profiles in
Linux-based networks: a combination of NIS and NFS.
I'm aware it's not ideal in terms of security, but it's been running in
our local school since 2010, and it just works. The current setup is
based on Slackware Linux on both server

NIS libuser and auto-make of maps
I have my NIS user/group files separate from the system user/group
files using libuser to manage them and that works well, but I am
trying to find a way to get libuser to invoke a 'make' of the NIS
maps whenever it updates the master files. Is there a routine I
can configure in libuser to do this, or am I stuck having to do
it by cron?

LDAP-based NIS server .vs. NIS migration to LDAP?
Greetings!
I tried to post this question to openldap group but somehow my post never
showed up there.
Anyway, I built PDC using Samba3 and OPENLDAP and now like to integrade NIS
service to it. I searched the net there are quite a few guides on how to
replace NIS with LDAP.
However, in our environment, we have almost all sorts of Unix platforms,
e.g. Linux (mainly Redhat), Solaris, HPUX, AIX,

NIS passwd and paswd.byname map encryption
Hello listmates.
It appears that in order to authenticate a Mac OS X Lion client via NIS the
passwords in passwd and passwd.byname maps need to be MD5 encrypted. How do
I see what encryption has been used in my maps? How do I change it?
Thanks.
Boris.

autofs handling of nis maps - Centos4
I have the following nis map (auto.facvs)
* -vers=3 &:/disk1
Which allows hosts that have /disk1 exported to be mounted to
/facvs/$hostname
It works fine, but on Centos4, it allows me to
cd /facvs/foo (where foo isn't a real host out there)
I find it has mounted my local /disk1 as /facvs/foo. It seems to be
ignoring the key in the map pertaining to the host if it's not a valid

Help with nis password changes
I normally try not to ask questions until I have done as much research as
possible, and again, this is the case...
Just after I thought I had my RH5 samba/nis server working fine, I come across
the inability to update nis passwords.
