Connecting without smbpasswd file
Hi; We've recently upgraded from Samba 1.7 to Samba 2.2.8 and we're using Samba to allow our users to connect to their Unix home directories from their PC's. Under 1.7 users were able to connect by mapping a drive from windows explorer and entering their unix username and password. Now, when we do this we get a "Incorrect password or Unknown username" error message.

Configuration options used in compiling Debian Samba 3.0 packages
Sorry if this is more a Debian question than a Samba one. Are the Debian binary packages for Samba 3.0 on the Samba site compiled with active directory and kerberos support? Is there a general way to tell what options were used when compiling Debian packages? Gary Vetter ND Retirement and Investment Office 701 328-9879

rsa_private_decrypt() failed
Hello, I'm running several Sparcs with Solaris 2.7 on them. They all have Openssh 2.9 installed, and all work fine. Except one. Every once in a while I get this: "Disconnecting: Corrupted check bytes on input." When I truss or I am at the console I get this: "rsa_private_decrypt() failed" I've tried reinstalling with OpenSSH 2.5, 2.9 and the commercial versions.

[jakob@crt.se: Re: [PATCH] Maildir support]
I don't think he's talking about mail server or clients here. I think this needs some clairification. This really only effects the $MAIL upon login. I've messed with this some, because it's caused problems for me personally at work. Here's the deal with an example: If you do a configure, on a Solaris 2.7 box, and then build sshd, when you log in you get this is you echo

timeout problems with 2.2.8a
Last year the samba servers for our Georgia Tech computer clusters were crashing about once a day running samba 2.0.7. Upgrading to 2.2.5 was disastrous - the Windows machines in the cluster started giving chronic bad-password errors. Since daily crashes seemed an easier problem to fix, we dug in and fixed the 2.0.9 source code. (Our patch is attached, for those interested in running 2.0.9

Revisiting slow explorer.exe connections
Hi: I recently encountered a problem reading directories via an XP Pro client shared from a samba server (redhat's rpm samba-2.2.7-5.8.0). File listing was sometimes VERRRY slow. It was not a DNS issue in this case. The symptoms, and my fix is below, but I wanted to ask, is there a way to deal with this from the server? (I dunno- like redirecting port 80 or something). >From the client,

XP Home client problems.
Hi, Please ignore this mail if you have already received this mail before. I have been trying for 2 frustrating weeks to get my XP Home machine to talk to the Samba server on my SuSE 9.2 Linux box. Described below is the crux of the problem. When I do an smbclient on the Linux box I can see the Windows machine listed. However, when I do a net view on the Windows XP Home machine I do not

Printing vs. iptables
Recently, Windows 2000 SP4 clients have developed a problem when using a network printer connected to a Samba print share. Some applications are OK. But take, well, notepad, for example. Selecting a local printer is normal, but there is a two minute delay (!) in selecting a network printer. Once selected, all is well. All smb operations are frozen until the selection happens. This is

Puppet modifying directories by executing shell script as non-root user results in kernel-level insufficient privilege complaints
I am using Puppet 3.1.0 on a CentOS 6.3 machines. The puppet master and puppet agents use CentOS 6.3 as their OS. I have a puppet script (init.pp file for the puppet module) that contains the following exec type: exec { "postgres init": cwd => "/applications/module", command => "bash initializePostgres.sh", user => "postgres", group =>

This happens with all kinds of files, with all kinds of programs, including Office97, text editors, develoment environments, etc. Sometimes - the incidents itself seems to be random and is not

RE: XP Pro timeout; we have a winner - webclient service
Thanks to Jason Balicki for the correct fix to this problem. The 'webclient' service in Windows XP, somehow interferes with access to the Samba server. With the service stopped and disabled, the clients are working again. [Q] Why does it take so long for XP to logon?
If I login to our Samba box (RedHat 7.1 + 2.4.20) under Windows 2K via Start->Run->share name, I get logged in almost immediately. It averages about 25 seconds under XP. This behavior has been true in various versions of Samba since I believe XP was available and is reproducible on every (several) Windows 2K/XP boxes I have tried. This is a workgroup environment with Samba acting as

Problems usign samba with Windows XP Pro
Hello, I have upgraded my computer from W2K to W XP Pro. I use samba connections to reach an Aix server (4.3.3), on which samba 2.2.8a is installed. Before upgrading my computer, everything worked perfectly, but since, the first time I try to access a file or directory on a samba network filesystem, I takes approximately 5 to 6 minutes to make connection. After that, response time is fine. Do

SMB/NMBD configuration troubles.
Folks, I am stumped! I have followed every tech tip I could find and I am still unable to complete my SMB installation. Specifically, I fail Test 4 and Tests 9 and 10. I believe the problem has something to do with the NMBD configuration. Below are the parameters of our system. Any help is greatly appreciated.
