smbclient's tar_re_search broken?
Hi all,
My old and stable backup script don't work anymore.
It's based on smbclient's tar command using crX parameters for creating
archive, excluding files based on basic regular expressions.
The box is running Fedora core 2, fully updated:
kernel-2.6.8-1.521
samba-common-3.0.7-2.FC2
samba-client-3.0.7-2.FC2
The error is easily reproducible:

Odd behavior of NFS of ZFS versus UFS
I have a test cluster running HA-NFS that shares both ufs and zfs based file systems. However, the behavior that I am seeing is a little perplexing.
The Setup: I have Sun Cluster 3.2 on a pair of SunBlade 1000''s connecting to two T3B partner groups through a QLogic switch. All four bricks of the T3B are configured as RAID-5 with a hot spare. One brick from each pair is mirrored with VxVM

Using rpcclient or samedit to randomise trust account passwords
when an nt 4.0 workstation or backup domain controller is joined to a
domain, the trust account password is set to a well-known initial value.
if you are concerned about internal network security, this is not really
an acceptable risk: any captured network traffic can be decoded simply
from knowing the name of the workstation, which is contained in the
network traffic itself. the initial value

NTP
Hi folks,
Have there been any changes to the way ntpd behaves in the past few
updates? Reason I ask, whenever I run the ntpq or ntpdc, I immediately
get a response of Name or service not known. I know things used to work
sometime back, and never saw this kind of stuff. Nothing has changed in
the /etc/ntp.conf file, nor has anything changed in the
/etc/ntp/ntpservers files.

Group sharing between NT and Linux domains
I need a little better information regarding the mapping of groups
between an NT PDC and a SAMBA PDC, which trust each other.
On the NT machine is a group called "ntgreen." On the Linux box (running
RH9 with Samba 3.0), there is a group called "lxgreen".
I've done a: net groupmap add ntgroup=ntgreen unixgroup=lxgreen. The
mapping shows up in a net groupmap list.

nscd crashes
I've had problems with nscd crashing every few days on my CentOS 4
mail server for a while now. The problems started maybe around CentOS
4.2, although I don't remember for sure. My debugging efforts let me
to disable nscd's persistent cache, and that seemed to work for a
while, but since upgrading to CentOS 4.4, the crashes have started
again.
When nscd crashes, the rest of the

Solaris/NUT 'wall' behaviour
I have compiled and installed NUT-2.2.1 on Solaris 10 on my Sunblade
2000 and it seems to work very well, except that the behaviour of
'wall', which upsmon uses to report significant events, may differ on
Solaris from other systems. On Sol10, wall writes the message *only* on
the console, unless the "-a" switch is used. On a standard JDS (GNOME)
system, there isn't normally a

nscd segfaulting on centos 4.5
Does anyone know if there is a fix for nscd segfaulting after a short period of time.
Googling for it came up with one result that suggested deleting the files in
/var/db/nscd , but that didn't help. Another result was about run away processes which
is not the problem I'm having.
They are x86_64 boxes.

filesystem remounted as read only
Hi,
I'm running kernel 2.6.8-15, lvm2 v2.01.04-5 and acl v2.2.23-1 on a
Sunblade 100 (sparc). In a few months we have experienced for several
times that an ext3 filesystem is remounted as read-only (this is due
to the option "errors=remount-ro" in /etc/fstab). Sometimes there is
no error in log files but sometimes we see:
kernel: init_special_inode: bogus i_mode (3016)

Has anyone had problems accessing random websites since going up to 6.4?
Since about the day after I got partly upgraded, if I try to access
nytimes.com, or orbitz.com, I get server not found.
With a lot of work, I, my manager, and the other admin, found that setting
options edns0 in /etc/resolv.conf fixed it - I suspect that the network
folks updated their internal nameservers (which are M$)

Samba 2.2.5 on Solaris 8

i compiled Samba 2.2.5 with gcc on a Sunblade with Solaris 2.8. Last month i
compiled Samba 2.2.4 on the same machine without problems.
The following options i used:
./configure --with-winbind --with-pam --with-quotas
I got the following warnings:

nscd and winbindd
Dear samba folks,
I have a special question regarding the simultaneous operation of nscd and winbindd on the same host:
We are running in a Samba file server setup where the nsswitch.conf looks like this:
passwd: files ldap
group: files ldap
shadow: files ldap
hosts: files dns wins
networks: files
protocols: db files
services: db files

NSCD, should it be used or not with LDAP, pam, nss
Again, another confusing issue in two how-to's I'm trying to resolve.
In the SBE (samba-3 by example) Pg 161 in the PDF states. (It's
actually page 200 of the PDF, but 161 of the numbered document pages.)
"The name service caching daemon (nscd) is a primary cause of
difficulties with name resolution, particularly where winbind is
used."
