Samba and Seq. Read ahead.
Please don't shoot me for cross posting, but I wanted to share this with everyone. Just thought you'd like to know that I've discovered a very interesting thing about AIX and Samba with respect to Sequential Read Ahead. I had been tracking a number of issues related to performance on my Samba 2.2.7a server and didn't have any issues other than lengthy profiles when I was running

2.2.7a slowness on AIX 5.1-ML03
I have an open PMR with IBM regarding a slowness issue when more than 450 smbds are trying to login and download roaming profiles. The system is a 6H1 with 6 RS64-III 668MHz cpus and 6 GB memory w/Gb ethernet. We have over 10,000 student accounts with roaming profiles and 800 XP-SP1 workstations for them to choose from. I've compiled 2.2.7a in 64 bit and 32 bit modes. Run it on both the 32

Using Asterisc for Taking Calls for Radio
Hello Asterisc-Users List, I am new to the list. I joined with a question in mind: How would you set up an asterisc box so that: (A) Someone dials a number (B) They are presented with a menu (C) Entering a number, like 1, connects a call to me. (D) I am on a mixing board, running an internet radio show. I want to run asterisc into the board, and run an output from the board to asterisc. Is that

Multiple smbd processes generated
We have an occasional problem which manifests with multiple processes being created for a particular user. For example, for a user "xy004": xy004 8463 0.0 0.0 6.02M 0K ?? IW 11:48:59 0:02.02 smbd xy004 9426 0.0 0.0 5.99M 0K ?? IW 11:52:18 0:03.68 smbd xy004 10433 0.0 0.0 5.81M 0K ?? IW 12:17:20 0:00.85 smbd xy004

Run away samba, and free() errors
Hi, I'm running samba 3.0.22, and have reproduced this issue in 3.0.14a as well. I am trying to access a network share with a large number of long directory names (up to around 80 characters), with around 1100 of these directories. Some times it works, but most of the time, the windows machine (running windows server 2003) never gets the listing. It seems to try to reconnect, and samba starts

LOGIC ERROR in smbd locks system...
Hello, i have a little problem here: Using Samba 2.2.2 with IBM ClearCase (2003) on a Sun Solaris 8 machine (2 cpus, 4G ram) (IBM does not support Samba 3.0 with Clearcase, maybe Samba 3.0 will fix the problem, but not able to test it yet). There are more than 100 smbd processes running in average. Load average of the maschine: under 1.0 in normal operation. But from time to time there are

masking of objects between mtrace() and getYahooData()
I am using getYahooData from TTR to get daily data. When i do it standalone, it is fine. It also works fine inside my code. However, when i run code inside mtrace(), i always get the following error: Error in xts(cbind(adj[[1]], adj[[2]]), index(obj)): order.by requires an appropriate time-based object After a lot of hand wringing, it looks to me that it happens because index in xts masks

stuck with affy / limma
Hi, I have a question concerning the analysis of some affymetrix chips. I downloaded some of the data from GEO GSE11324 (see below). In doing so I'm stuck after I identified the probesets with significant changes. I have problems in assigning probeset specific gene names as well as getting the genomic coordinates. Furthermore I have no clue how to deal with the fact, that most genes have

SAMBA eats up all memory...
Hello, I am running SAMBA 2.0.7.0 on AIX 4.3.3.0 I have a 1 Tera Byte filesystem on AIX made available to NT and MAC. There is heavy IO activity on this filesystem and all of a sudden the NT's and MAC's can't read or write any file on this shared filesystem. Also AIX is running out of memory whenever this happens and files cannot be copied onto the said filesystem even at unix

Digium G729 licence unattended install
Hi, One of the key features of Asterisk is that we can install it on many hardware platforms. We've done our best to script this installation process, so that, in case of hardware failure, we can re-install Asterisk on another platform. The question I have is how can we adapt our process so that Digium's G729 licences (or other licenced software) could be installed without asking too

smbd daemon uses all filedescriptors
We are running samba on a number of HP systems running HP/UX 11.00. We moved from samba version 2.0.7. to samba version 2.2.3a. We have about 200-400 smbd's running on one host. Samba version 2.2.3a was running without any problems for about two weeks. But now on two different servers indepent of each other, the file table was full. We found out that ONE smbd used about 5000 !!

What are my smbd's doing ? (was Re: secrets.tdb locking fun!)
Hi all, We're still suffering here with odd performance issues on our Samba 3.0.24 install here on our big chunky Solaris 9 box. The user perceived issue is slow performance (whilst browsing in Windows Explorer, or opening files from within applications etc.etc.) The obvious symptom on the server is a collection of smbd's at the top of the 'top' listing. 4 or 5 or so taking

Custom Installer Kernel
Hi All, I'm trying to remaster the boot.iso image with a custom kernel as the nForce based boards I have are not supported by the stock CentOS 5.0 installer, but they are supported by newer kernels. I need this so I can do kickstarted network installs. Is there a howto available for how to go about this? My google prowess must not be as good as I thought as I've not been able to find

3.0.0 and libiconv
I'm sure i'm missing something stupid, but I'm getting the following message when compiling 3.0.0 on AIX 5.2. bos.rte.iconv is installed as part of the OS, but I installed libiconv 1.9.1 from gnu into /usr/local and it still happens. checking for iconv in /usr/local... yes checking can we convert from CP850 to UCS2-LE?... no checking can we convert from IBM850 to UCS2-LE?... no

Too many smbd processes?
Hello People, /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb status yields the following output: smbd (pid 31224 31209 31102 31098 31077 31069 31056 3237 3171 3154 3147 3144 3131 3129 3128 3124 3119 3091 3077 2590 2582 2564 2491 2468 1964) is running... nmbd (pid 31062 31061) is running... In total 25 smbd's and 2 nmbd's, while only five or six users actually use the samba-server. This many processes causes

unable to open passdb database.
I found many questions but no answers on the web. I described my needs in earlier post, but now switched from security = domain to security = server, and designated the AD domain server as the password server. It works as desired, i.e. I don't need smbpasswd any more, and if windows users change their passwords by ctrl-alt-del, they can later use the new password without coming to admins.

Two smbd daemons and clustered environment
Hello I have a question about running two SMBD daemons on one host. Background for this request is Samba failover in parallel services mode. The actual requirement is to start Samba processes bind to specific IP address. This can be done by specifying following parameters in smb.conf file : interfaces = 192.168.100.1/24 bind interfaces only = yes But nmbd process always is

Lots of "write_data: write failure in writing to client" and "Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1"
Last week we installed Samba 3.0.20b on one of our servers, worked fine and does it's job well. But today the load was rising due two smbd processes taking up all cputime. While looking for hints on what was going on the logfiles show two types of errors (I don't know at this time if it has anything to do with the load spike): lib/util_sock.c:write_data(554) write_data: write failure in

Wine with 2x nVidia GTX260 lame peformance ingame?
Hi people. So I got Steam running properly in WINE by reverting to version 177 of the nVidia driver. Now I have a new problem. I have really shitty performance for Source games in WINE. This means rainbow-y colors, glistening walls, at ~13 fps with all lowest graphics settings. High quality native linux games run beautifully at all highest settings, including Penumbra and Prey and Quake 4. I
