charsets in samba3
Is there any way to make samba use whatever the default charset was on samba
2.2.x (like 2.2.3?).
I've just upgraded to samba 3 and just about every second file displays
incorrectly on my windows clients and most of them refuse to open because of
this. THis is causing absolute chaos to the point where I (an avid windows
hater) am starting to look at reload all the servers in question with

Samba upgrade on dedrat linux
I'm running samba 2.2.5 on a redhat 9.0 server. I'm planning on upgrading
it to 2.2.8a tomorrow.
My questions are thus:
1) I has hassles before when doing this on another redhat box because samba
was installed with redhat's own rpm's which install in different locations.
Would it be OK to do rpm --erase for all the redhat packages (samba, common,

more roaming profile woes after upgrading to 2.2.8a
I upgraded one of my samba boxes to 2.2.8a after all kinds of problems with
roaming profiles not loading corrently.
Everybody can now log in (as log as the w2k machine has sp3 or newer) but I
still get the following error:
Cannot start microsoft outlook.
This happens on w2k prof and on my w2k terminal servers. I could fix the
workstations by adding their user account to the local

split network into seperate networks
I've got a pretty large lan at the moment and we are moving into a new
office building next week.
I'm looking at splitting the lan into seperate networks. At this stage I
have one samba DC that does netlogon, roaming profiles etc for all clients.
I'm not using LDAP with samba and won't be able to too soon as the change
would be major. I have a ldap server used for qmail /

NT terminal server
I'm running a NT4.0 Terminal Server with 50+ peopleon it. All the users' home directories / data etc. is located on a samba server (2.2.1a) on a RedHat7.1 box.
All the users on the server are shown in samba under the same connection as they're all on the same machine... this means samba only runs one copy of smb for all these users.
Everything seems to be working / set up fine but

Roaming profiles
I want to setup a linux box with samba as a file and print server for a
LAN of 20 NT 4.0 SP3 workstations. I want the home direcotories to be on
the server the clients to have roaming profiles.
For this, do I have to make the linux box a domain controller? I want to
avoid it if I can, because the domain control code in not on the
production releases. I don't want to setup an NT server either.

smbclient et al: -k by default?
Hello,
I tried to find something in the HOWTOs and the mailing list, but failed
so far...
Is it possible to tell smbclient and the other command line client utils
to use kerberos auth by default? security=ads is already set, smbclient -k
works fine. I just don't want to specify -k at the commandline all the
time but configure that somewhere in smb.conf
It would also be nice to have

Win2k terminal server and "MultipleUsersOnConnection"
On NT4 terminal server it is possible to change a registry setting to make it create one connection to samba per user ....
I know there has been a lot of discussion around this but I can't find a definative answer in any of the posts: How do you do this with 2000?
The fact that it only runs one smb process is causing serious problems on my samba server.
Anybody?

[Fwd: Winbind under 3.0
I posted this plea for help last week, but received no responses, so I
figured I'd re-send. Since posting this message I upgraded to 3.0
stable using the package posted on the samba.org site, and the behavior
remains the same. I should also mention, if I try smbclient -U guest
and enter an empty password, I can successfully get a browse list fromt
the server. Is there an increased

Win2k joining a Samba domain
Hi,
Having managed to get far enough with the config to get a win2k box to
connect to a Samba v3.0 share where the Samba machine's backend is based
in LDAP, I cannot now add this win2k machine to the domain.
Can anyone give me an example of how to set up an account within the
LDAP server that has sufficient rights to allow the machine to join my
Samba domain?
Regards,
Graham

root prexec/postexec & login scripts
I have a perl script that I'd like to use to create windows 9x login
scripts at login time but I cannot get the process to work right. I have
RedHat 7.3 (actually the k12ltsp v2.1.0 which is a modified RH7.3) set
up as a domain controller which is working well. Manually created login
scripts run fine on the workstations at login. I'm using a netlogon

PrintUIEntry for NT4?
For Win2K, I've been using RunDLL32 printui.dll,printuientry to do a bunch
of different printer related stuff (most notably, mapping printers and
setting the default).
Looks like NT4 doesn't have the same stuff. Is there anything classier I
can use than NET USE under NT4 (without downloading something like
Kixstart)?
Thanks for your help.

equipment
Hello, it is likely that I will have to analyze a rather sizeable dataset:
60000 records, 10 to 15 variables. I will have to make descriptive
statistics, and estimate linear models, glm's and maybe Cox proportional
hazard model with time varying covariates. In theory, this is possible in
R, but I would like to get some feedback on the equipment I should get for
this. At this moment, I have a
