Bootable Kernel
Hello, Sorry to sound like a bad record, but I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting "Bad gzip magic numbers" errors when ISOlinux is trying to inflate the kernel. Right now I'm clueless as to what's wrong. I've tried various kernels compiled on a few different platforms. Has anyone ever seen this before? ANyone know where a better forum to ask this question

Transition to CentOS - RAID HELP!
Hi Folks, I've inherited an old RH7 system that I'd like to upgrade to CentOS6.1 by means of wiping it clean and doing a fresh install. However, the system has a software raid setup that I wish to keep untouched as it has data on that I must keep. Or at the very least, TRY to keep. If all else fails, then so be it and I'll just recreate the thing. I do plan on backing up

How does LVM decide which Physical Volume to write to?
Hi everyone. This isn't specifically a CentOS question, since it could apply for any distro but I hope someone can answer it anyway. I took the following steps but was puzzled by the outcome of the test at the end: 1. Create a RAID1 array called md3 with two 750GB drives 2. Create a RAID1 array called md9 with two 500GB drives 3. Initialise md3 then md9 as physical volumes (pvcreate) 4.

mdadm syntax
Hi All, I am trying to create an MD device. I am using the command: /sbin/mdadm --create --a /dev/md12 --level=1 --run --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda12 /dev/sdb12 to create the device, and to dynamically create the device file if needed. What I want is the device file to be created as /dev/md12, but with the -a flag it creates it as /dev/md<first unwsed minor number>. I have tried various

Every hour I get a mail from logcheck with a line like Nov 6 12:08:34 wheat fetchnews[13617]: clamping maxage for comp.os.linux.admin to global expire 50 The strange thing is that syslog is filled with similar lines, but this is the only one I get in the report. It is the last such line in each group: # many similar lines deleted Nov 6 12:08:32 wheat fetchnews[13617]: comp.std.c++: considering

Accidentally nuked my system - any suggestions ?
Hi, My workstation is running CentOS 7 on two disks (sda and sdb) in a software RAID 1 setup. It looks like I accidentally nuked it. I wanted to write an installation ISO file to a USB disk, and instead of typing dd if=install.iso of=/dev/sdc I typed /dev/sdb. As soon as I hit <Enter>, the screen froze. I tried a hard reset, but of course, the boot process would stop short very early in

Question on best way of configuring this
I have a Windows XP machine that I don't use very often, but I leave it powered up because once in a blue moon I need to remotely access it (eg from work), and to keep the Antivirus software up to date. When I do use it at the console I'm mostly doing basic video editting or transcoding (eg from transferred TiVo content). I sometimes play older games on it (eg Carmaggedon or Worms 2;

Received Date vs Date Header
I am trying to figure out why my mail clients are not correctly showing me the received date versus the date header date. I am using Dovecot 1.1B9. Here is a copy of the rawlog from Dovecot when I started up the client. Is Dovecot supposed to be sending the received date and the date header during this conversation? * OK [RAWLOG TIMESTAMP] 2007-11-30 16:48:31 * NAMESPACE ((""

mdadm --stop
I have been trying to delete an md. I have recently updated to version 1.12 of mdadm. I used to be able to do mdadm ,dev. --stop. It does not seem to be stopping, but I do not get any error and the $?/return code is 0. The --verbose option for mdadm does nothing for --stop. How do I determine why this is not successful? Thanks...Art

ext3 external journal and fstab
Hi again! I would like to add an ext3 partition (eg. /dev/md11) with its external journal (on /dev/md21) to /etc/fstab in order to have it mounted while system-startup. Do I have to specify the external journal device in fstab or does the partition find its journal device by itself? If the first, ho should I specify it? I created the journal with mke2fs /dev/md22 -O journal_dev and the ext3

INN removed from CentOS 6
I use inn to make internal company announcements and discussions available to remote offices. I note inn is removed form RHEL 6. What replaces inn? http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Technical_Notes/apc.html Will inn be available from elsewhere? Will I have to compile it? Should I modify my scripts to create and install html files for a web server? That would

question about disk performance in domU
Hi all, When I ran the experiments to compare an application''s execution time in both a domU (named cctest1) and a native Linux machine (named ccn10), I noticed the application executes faster in domU. The host of the domU (named ccn9) and ccn10 are two nodes of a cluster and they have same hardware configurations. domU (cctest1) is created by exporting loopback files from dom0 on
