XP can browse samba by IP, but not by name - NMB issues?
I have an XP home (falcon) and an XP pro (tatooine) machine, both
behind a rh9 box (hoth) acting as firewall. I've been trying to get
samba set up on the linux box. I think I have it mostly working except
that the XP boxes won't list hoth under "My Network Places - Microsoft
Windows Network - MSHOME",
and I cannot access hoth by name at all from the XP-pro box (by IP, I

Problem with my 'master browser'
Hi!
Configuration: NT1 (NT Server 4.0 SP4)
Unix2 (samba 2.0.3)
Is this a normal behavior? My NT-Server and my samba-server a fighting to be
the master browser.
Look also at my smb.conf [global]-section. The OS-Level of my samba-server
is much higher.

problems with Windows XP clients becoming local master?
Hi there. First time posting to this but I'm getting desperate so apologies
for any netiquette faux pas...
I'm running a Suse box with Samba on it, with Windows XP SP2 clients viewing
it in a workgroup. Some pc's are having timeouts when attempting to view a
network share though. In the logs, sometimes at the same time as the
timeouts, this appears:

Samba 4.1.6 huge security flaw
Hi all,
I've been running Samba 4.1.6 in production for 2 weeks now and it's been
great. However I noticed a huge security flaw today that I hit only once. I
access Samba4 shares over the VPN that is irrelevant since the security
access is user-based, not IP based. What happens right after the connection,
Windows tries to read the shares and some are empty, but they are not
supposed to

After upgrade to 4.9.4, internal DNS no longer working
I was too quick to send my previous email. It can't really be a problem of
the package since I have, as mentioned, another system with the exact same
setup and the exact same package versions and it all works there...

After upgrade to 4.9.4, internal DNS no longer working
The two systems I'm referring to are on different domains, different
locations. No connection whatsoever except me being the one administering
both.
According to oEMInformation the server was provisioned by 4.3.3. I just
checked the Samba log file and it seems that version 4.7.4 was running
before the update.
I'm now looking at the logs right before the upgrade and indeed, there have

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody.
I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since
I couldn't find anything, here I am.
I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux.
A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server,
to manage the list of connected computers.
However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

Samba pid in uninterruptible state
Greetings,
I recently upgraded Samba on an Ubuntu 14.04.2 server from version 4.1.9 to 4.2.3. Upon rebooting Samba process goes into a running state then after a short time it will go into an uninterruptible state. If I check the log.samba, it appears that it is attempting to start, then hangs at the following:

Just a basic samba server...being accessed by windows 7 to the gc and tmr shares with \\10.10.171.9\gc and \\10.10.171.9\tmr

The file server is Ubuntu 18.04 and there was an update to Ubuntu 18.04.1, which I thought would be a mild step.

WINS server looses election irregular in a heterogeneous network
Dear Samba-Users,
I have to administer a Samba WINS Server in a heterogenous network. It's a
student hostel with about 200 mixed (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X) computers. We
have a DHCP, which delivers the WINS-Server address to the clients. I don't
have access to the clients.
The problem is, that the WINS-Server (Samba 3.0.27) looses the
Master-Browser election irregulary. I can't
