Wierd interaction between Samba and HTTP?
Hi, O/S: Fedora Core 6 When running samba-3.0.24-1 (downloaded from Samba WWW site), all is well. But when updating Samba via 'yum update' to samba-3.0.24-5.fc6, things get bad. Things are equally bad when I try the next BETA release of Samba. When things don't work, I try to mount a share from Windows, like: net use z: \\<host>\jeff and it fails. When it fails, I

Windows XP slow access to network places shortcut?
All, In winxp & 2k for that matter, you have the ability of saving shortcuts to network places in the my network places. When some of my users try to access these shortcuts(to a samba share) in winxp, it takes a horrendous amount of time for the folders to populate the screen. Especially when viewing in windows explorer with the folders view button depressed. Under tools>folder

RE: XP Pro timeout; we have a winner - webclient service
Thanks to Jason Balicki for the correct fix to this problem. The 'webclient' service in Windows XP, somehow interferes with access to the Samba server. With the service stopped and disabled, the clients are working again. smbclient ls error: NT_STATUS_PATH_NOT_COVERED (user permissions are okay)
Hi everyone: I'll try to be both succinct and accurate here: Attempting to get a directory listing from a DFS export fails using "Samba 3.0", but works fine on windows (XP, 2K, NT4). This happens via smbclient and via "smbmount"ed directories. I had no problem joining this domain, and the user that I am connecting as has permissions to open these folders (I checked

webDAV (webclient) interferes with XP logons
Very long story short... 1. Samba server on machine running iptables or behind a firewall 2. Client XP domain logins taking 45 seconds or more. 3. The problem: webDAV (webclient) is running on the XP workstations and this mysteriously triggers access to port 80 on the file server, which in turn adds up to long delays. If you are running an HTTP server and it isn't blocked then

Re: smbclient ls error: NT_STATUS_PATH_NOT_COVERED
Hi everyone: I'd appreciate any help here... Using smbclient I can change into a directory within a DFS share, but when I attempt to list it's contents, I receive the subject error. I can view the directory (folder) from a win client using the same credentials. I already posted much of my configuration, sans the "smb.conf", although if anyone suspects that there are

net testjoin question
Hi: I had a problem joining a (red hat 8) machine (client) to our campus wide domain. Unfortunately I am in the dark as to many of the details of this network design here. So I am trying to back out some details. One machine had no problem joining the domain. Both are almost identically set up (compiled samba 3.0.2a). The other resisted a sucessful join until I added "-S" to the net

Documentation updates...
Hi all, Just a couple of suggestions for documentation updates. First of all, perhaps you should include the following about Windows XP and slow logons/long delays in opening files: Windows XP and slow network logons/long delays in opening files =============================================================== Windows XP includes a WebDav client that attempts to open shares via HTTP. [Q] Why does it take so long for XP to logon?
If I login to our Samba box (RedHat 7.1 + 2.4.20) under Windows 2K via Start->Run->share name, I get logged in almost immediately. It averages about 25 seconds under XP. This behavior has been true in various versions of Samba since I believe XP was available and is reproducible on every (several) Windows 2K/XP boxes I have tried. This is a workgroup environment with Samba acting as

rsync problem with smb/ncpfs filesystem?
I'm trying to rsync a smb filesystem to a novell netware filesystem. Both file systems are mounted on a debian woody system (from root). On both file systems the rsync process has "root" file system rights. But trying to rsync a file with a read only flag like -r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 3441648 Jan 20 1998 WEBCLIENT.EXE to the novell filesystem gives this error: rename

Samba and the WinXP WebClient
Hi! We've had horrible performance when opening files from out Samba server with OpenOffice.org on some of our XP machines (not on all, I might add). Also, the general file transfers (copy to/from server) were fast and adequate. Then I had stumbled upon the Samba HOWTO which mentioned turning off this "WebClient" service on WinXP. I'm just rather curious, why does this

Printing vs. iptables
Recently, Windows 2000 SP4 clients have developed a problem when using a network printer connected to a Samba print share. Some applications are OK. But take, well, notepad, for example. Selecting a local printer is normal, but there is a two minute delay (!) in selecting a network printer. Once selected, all is well. All smb operations are frozen until the selection happens. This is
