syslinux-3.36-pre8 feedback
Tested floppy boot on two machines (one PII 350, one 486DX4)
Floppy boot with syslinux is very very slow, more than 18 mn to boot a linux
kernel from floppy on the 2 machines.
Tested with 3 different disquettes that were know to work, boot is reached
after this very long time.
Noise from floppy head make think floppy wait approximatly one minute
between each read.
No problem with pxe boot with

Graphical table in R
I would like R to produce some tabulated data in a graphical output. When
I say tabulated data, what I mean is a table with rows and columns. This
would be useful when reading in a big file, performing some analysis on
it, and then wanting to display the results as a table.
Something like
plot(x,...)
where x is a matrix
For example, the result could look (approximatly) like...

solving equation system
Hello,
I want to solve some two dimensional equation system with R. Some systems
are not solvable analytically.
Here is an example:
(I) 1/n*sum{from_i=1_to_n}(Xi) = ln lambda + digamma(c)
(II) mean(X) = x / lambda
I want to find lambda and c,
which R-function could do that task?

TDM2400P FXS Only vs. T1/E1 to FXS Channel Banks
Hello All,
I'm looking to get some feedback on which solution of providing FXS is
going to have the best results with faxing. I'm only looking to see what
method is going to provide the best digitization into Asterisk, not for
transmission from Asterisk to else where. Any recommendations of
specific channel banks are welcome. I will need to provide approximatly

Problem with reproducing log likelihood estimated with ghyp package
I was playing around with the ghyp package and simulated series of
t-distributed variables when suddenly i was not able to reproduce the log
likelihood values reported by the package. When trying to reproduce the
likelihood values, I summed the log(dt(x,v)) values and it worked with some
simulated series but not all.
Is there any obvious flaws with this script?

Time to connect
Greetings Fellow Sambaiites!
I have a small problem that I haven't seen addressed in any of the
forums (have searched the net to no avail!).
I have a small 100 mbit network................using Samba 1.9.18p10
on a Slack box as the PDC.
When I initially look in the NN on any Win95,98 and NT boxes, the
Samba box appears...................when I try to browse the Samba
shares on the

Tweaking AGGRESSIVE_SUPPRESSOR
Using TDM400's here and I have tried everything to cure the echo. I
have used the Milliwatt test from the telco and from asterisk to tune
RX/TX gain via a patched ztmonitor. What happens is I experience
midcall echo. I turned on aggressive_suppressor and it seems to do
great. The problem happens with misc. noise around the office will
cause it to mute the other end of a phone call while

[SO]HO Software RAID5 server: which implementation should I choice?
Hello, freebsd-stable.
Does somebody use some software RAID5 on FreeBSD in real production
system?
I want to build storage server for my home: RAW photos, multi-layer
PhotoShop files and FLAC-encoded music consume a lot of space, and
they should be availible both from desktop & notebook.
Also, all photo-content is unique, so I need some insuranse from
single HDD crash. I understand,

weak password checking for samba 3 ?
I've got a problem with some idiots of my users :=).
They always use weak passwords. Does anyone know
a way to find out which passwords are easy to crack?
I mean usual passwords like god, sex, password, $username, ....
I use tdb as password database.
thank you,

how to make puppet a killer app
I''ve been thinking about how to make Puppet a killer app, and I think there
is one specific thing that could be done to help make that happen:
People using Puppet now to consistently state what they *really* wish Puppet
could do for them -- the recent thread around Puppet on Windows is in that
vein, but it''s not specific enough. For example, I''d like to know what

Performance problems with bitmaphandling on mac (only)
Hello,
i am trying to get an application to run on mac. It already runs fine on linux (ubuntu and freebsd), but on mac I've severe performance issues using bitmaps. I tracked it down that it has something to do with hbitmap using the api for creating a 10 mega pixel image and saving as a bitmap file.
On windows this takes about 1.400 ms, on ubuntu 2.000 ms but on mac approximatly 30.000

XenServer 5.6 FP1 - CPU utilization using sar
Hi all,
Using XenServer with a RHEL6 beta VM, I have sar installed on the hypervisor and VM.
If I do a ''md5sum < /dev/urandom'' to spike CPU usage on the VM, I see the indication
on the XenCenter performance graph on CPU 0. It does increase quickly.
Neither sar output gives any sort of indication that the CPU is being loaded. This VM is
pinned to both processor 0 and 1

Some smbd-processes uses 99% CPU and push load to 10
Hi all
I have a samba 3.0.2a PDC with OpenLDAP running since some month.
Approximatly once in 2 weeks there is a problem with one smbd-child
process which eats up all cpu-resources. I have to kill (-2) it by hand
after that all works normal. I can't figure out why.
Today i had the chance to "strace" this process since all "clients" go
for a birthday party. Now i sit here

Open Source Research
Hi.
My name is Kyrre Myrbostad and I'm studying information systems (IS) at
the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in Trondheim. I am
writing my master thesis on the subject of Open Source Software, with a
particular focus on methods of organisation and techniques for
exchanging information and knowledge.
It would help me a lot in my research if I could have a short

Generate missing data patterns
Dear R-users,
i try to generate missing values in a matrix X according to a given
missingnes pattern R with the probabilities p per row.
X<-matrix(rnorm(3*100),ncol=3)
## indicator matrix for missingnes (1 observed, 0 missing)
R<-matrix(c(1,1,1,
0,0,1,
1,1,0,
0,1,1),ncol=3,byrow=TRUE)
## probabilities for row 1, row 2, row 3 and row 4
