Can't mount dir on hdb1
Hi All,
Running Samba on a Fedora 4 machine in a mixed home environment.
Domain=[HOME-NETWORK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.14a-2]
Trying unsuccessfully to mount the dir that's on hdb1 on another Fedora
4 machine. Can mount any dir from hda just fine. Only problem is the one

R- exp(-1000) ? - how to get R to give me an actual answer ?
Dear All,
I am a novice user of the R software package. When I try and compute,
exp(-1000) or exp(-2000), i get the answer as zero. Is there any way i can get
R to compute the answer and give me an actual number ? ( by increasing the
precision or any other method).
If I cannot get R to give me a number, can anybody give me some advice on how
to manually compute this number ?
I would greatly

couple questions about supported UPSes and politics of purchase
a customer of mine needs a UPS capable of supporting a small server in his
office. Obviously, nut is a good thing for him for clean shutdown etc.
especially with the crappy quality power in his office condo.
I wanted to purchase an MGE UPS but it looks like they purchased APC and are now
flogging that product line. Now, I've never been happy with APC. I have an APC

How to Simulate UPS on battery?
I've recently moved from installing NUT from source to installing NUT
from the FreeBSD package (FreeBSD 9.1).
One would think that I might have learned not to change anything, but I
made the change. And here is my tale of woe.....
My first question is: is it possible to simulate a "UPS is on battery"
state?
Some background:
UPS comm port is connected to and monitored by

I completely agree (having said that I'm pretty new to all this so I might be full of it).
You should run your own CA if you have an active financial interest in your company (say your the owner). No added benefit to have your certificate certified by a third party, why would they care about that one client). Ofcourse people would say "but ofcourse you would verify your own

Mark Crispin - RIP
'Father' of the IMAP protocol. Died Dec 28.

Had a TOPS-20 in his basement that did a great job of keeping the house
warm in the cool months (I remember one BAR bof where he extoled the
benefits of this form of home heating).

I can't see any security advantages of a self signed cert. If the keypair is generated locally (which it should) a certificate signed by an external CA can't be worse just by the additional signature of the external CA.
Better security can only be gained if all users are urged to remove all preinstalled trusted CAs from their mail clients (which seems impractical). Else an attacker could

Playback over Console
I'm trying to setup a primitive announcement-paging system in my house
using the line-out from my * box to a cheap amplifier that runs to
speakers on our first and second floors from the basement. I have a
extension that connects to Console, and console is set to auto-pickup.
I'm using alsa drivers.
This all works great, except for one thing. I want to play a tone over
the console after

internet wireless network requirements
I currently am using CentOS 4.4 desktop computer. What would I need to recieve an internet signal from a wireless router that is connected to an Apple computer that is located upstairs? I am in the basement less than 150 feet from the Apple computer. I do not have wireless card in the CentOS desktop computer and am looking for a card to install to accomplish this.

GeForce 4 TI 4200 for free (this is no joke, this is no spam !)
Hi there,
I read on last news about Nouveau on Phoronix that some hardware has been
given to Nouveau developers.
Therefore, would someone be interested by my old GeForce4-Ti 4200 / 64 Mb ???
I can send it to any developper that would be interested, instead of having
this card rusting in my basement !
You also can see that proposal on the following topic in the phoronix forums :

Not a User Yet - but have some questions
I've been tasked with fitting out an appartment building with a phone system.
The entire appartment is getting broadband, with Cat6 Cables into each
appartment and fibre down the trunk. I was hoping to have PSTN in the
basement connecting to the IP system.
Today I found out however that one of the services will be paid TV - and it
will need a PSTN backchannel - ie a modem. The set top

Explain to me VoIP termination service.
I'm confused about VoIP termination service. Would this mean that I could
have an Asterisk server in my basement and receive/call PSTN phones via a
VoIP termination provider? The "call" out from my box would go over the
Internet to a termination provider which would in turn convert it to analog
over the PSTN to someone's plain old phone? And vise-versa, a plain old
phone caller

Enterprise quality SIP provider
I need to setup incoming (over an 800 number and some local DID's) and
outgoing phone calls (all over the country) with an Asterisk server.
This asterisk server has 20 Polycom 430 phones connecting to it.
I need the best possible SIP provider out there. I have tried
http://www.nufone.net and http://www.broadvoice.com and they do not
even come close to the expected quality.

9.0-RELEASE PV from scratch on XCP v1.1.0
Title: HOWTO-FreeBSD-on-XCP

* The Challenge - ParaVirtualized FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE under XCP 1.1.0
The idea here is to create a PV FreeBSD VM under Xen Cloud Platform
(XCP) without starting with an HVM first. The documentation I''''ve
been able to find on-line is at least a year old and is mostly written

Powering off the big stuff first
Hello,
I had an idea last week: why shut everything off (in my basement) when the power goes off (and run time goes below X minutes)?
My idea: shutdown the big stuff first (two servers) leaving the little stuff (switches, wireless, gateway) running for a while longer. I might get another 30 minutes of internet that way. Let me watch a bit more streaming?.
I?m convinced that idea is achievable

Best Environment for development
This is a newb question, and probably one that is a matter of taste
more than objective merit.
I''m working on a home server, running Linux [FC 4], hosting a website
[look for generocities.com shortly]. I have a delightful new Windows
XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop.
What would the community recommend for the environment in which I develop?
I don''t mean technologies like RoR
