Linux server not shown in WINS browser
Our shared file server decided to take a hiatus from WINS earlier this week.
On friday we could see the machine name in the browse function of any windows
box when you went to the map network drives portion of windows explorer. Now
the only way I can map a network drive is to enter the server's IP like this:
\\ 192.168.xxx.xxx\sharename
But this also presents a problem because this server

smbmount not exiting in script
I run a script to mount several file shares from machines running W98
and W2000 so that I can do incremental dumps every night of these file
shares.
smbmount almost always fails to exit. This causes the script to stall
and so the dumps are not done. In the am, if I kill the smbmount
processes, the dumps complete successfully, since the mounts were in
fact correctly completed. (I know that

Login time logging?
Hi all!
I need a setup that will log exactly when a user has logged in or out of
samba.
Preferably I would like to have a separate list per user, but this can
also be achieved with grep.
I found some solutions that rely on login script processing which is nice
if your clients are running Win95/Win98 but for anything else it won't
work.
Anybody know of a solution?
Thanks!!

2GB limit in Samba?
Hi.
Is there such a limit to 2GB in samba 2.2.8a-1? I get a "File imit exceeded"
when I try to tar or cp smth to a smbmount. On both machines I can
successfully do dd if=/dev/zero and create a file of 3GB, I can also tar
-cvf it but no cp to smb. RH8 if it matters...

unable to ping windows hosts by hostname
Hello,
On RedHat 9 with samba-2.2.7a-7.9.0, I am connecting to a windows
network through a cisco VPN connection.
When the vpn is established, I can make smb calls (for example, I can
browse network objects using gnome-nautilus)... and I can explicitly
resolve names; for example:
wbinfo -N dheld3 (works)
nmblookup dheld3 (works)
however, a more general lookup fails

smbfs size limit
Hello, Samba-users,
please don?t beat me, but I have to ask this question here, as I
haven?t found an answer I can rely on until now.
I am working on a solution for a backup-problem and one possible
solution could be the use of smbfs/smbmount.
I am testing that now, mounting a WinXPHome(sorry, testing ...)-share
which is 20GB of size (8GB used) to my linux-box. The linux-box is a

user management tool
There was talk a few weeks ago about the possibility of a Tk-based user management tool
that never happened. I'm planning on trying to do this myself. What features were to be in
the one that never materialized? What features might people want in it? To begin, the
program will only be able to do things that can be done straight through the existing
command line tools (net, smbpasswd,

Problem Restarting Samba3
I have Samba 3.0.0 installed on Mandrake 9.2. I also have Samba 2.8.8a
installed per instructions from Mandrake -- but I do NOT start Samba 2.8.8a
automatically. In fact, I don't use it at all. Maybe I should uninstall the Samba
2.8.8a rpm??? I will update to 3.0.1 as soon as an rpm is available from Mandrake.
Anyway, I have a problem when I try to add a new share to my smb.conf file. I

Permissions and authorities
Hello,
We've just migrated from Netware to Samba and have only 1 problem that's
affecting our users.
When a user creates a new document in a directory the owner and group or
both set to root. The directories are owned by a specific user and there is
also a group associated with the directory.
I was expecting that any new documents created would have the same user and
owner as the

Restarting
Greetings'
i have installed a redhat 6.2 on my machine. I have also installed Samba 2.0.6 on it and seems working fine for almost a year. But one of my problem is "Disappearing Mounts". I always use this command ( mount -t smbfs //server/shared/ /mnt/temp -o username%password) for re-Mounting. But several days later... my machine keeps on restarting everytime we access the mounted
