Ads server = huh?
All,
I've installed a Redhat 9 system with all packages from 3 discs.
Now I've removed my samba 2 related packages and installed samba 3 using
rpm.
After setting up kerberos with my W2k system and testing that out
successfully
I set up smb.conf with security = ads etc
I've also set 'ads server' but this config option causes various samba
binaries to report

Can connect directly, but not browse samba server from Windows Workgroup network
Dear Samba gurus,
I have a Fedora 8 linux server, running samba 3.0.28a-0.fc8. I am
doing the simplest thing of all - exposing a public read-only share
within MS Workgroup environment. My server has a fixed local IP
address (192.168.1.200) and it's on the same subnet as the rest of the
machines. The server and machines are connected to a 24 port CISCO
switch.
My problem is that I can

Hi all,
I'm going on my tests and I've tried followings tasks:
I have stop nmb smb winbind service.
I have rm -f /etc/samba/secrets.tdb and /var/lib/samba*.tdb files.
I have modified smb.conf file as I wanted to connect to NT4 server instead
ADS so:
netbios name = MILLX01
wins server = xxx
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_KEEPALIVE
workgroup = GKNSMI
#realm = SINTER.GKN.COM

Windows 2003 + winbind = hell
Hi,
I want to set up authentication using samba 2.2.7 winbind and pam with
Windows 2003.
The Windows 2003 server is set up in "mixed mode".
I follow the HOWTO, set up smb.conf and join the samba server to the domain.
I hit a road block when 'getent passwd' yields no active directory users.
I have been trying to get this running for two days, and I am beginning to

Fixed: 3.0.1pre1 broke my 'valid users' on one share
Setting 'winbind use default domain = no' and adjusting my share access to
use the DOMAIN+ prefix fixed the problem.
There must be some portions of samba which are not friendly with this
option, yet.
The main reason why I like this option being, when ADS user's login to my
server via ssh they can use the username alone, instead of prepending
'DOMAIN+'

Samba benefits.
Hi,
First of all, excuse me if this topic could be already posted in the past
but I can't believed on that.
I'm working for a big company which have some plants in America and
Europe.Americans plants works prevalently with MS Server while Europe plants
works on both MS and Linux-Samba.Our rightly compromise was to keep both
systems work togheter (samba domain member).

Chapter 10 "Active Directory, Kerberos, and Security".
Hi all,
Referred to Samba-3 by Example I don't have clear one point on Chapter 10
"Active Directory, Kerberos, and Security":
How to set Windows 200x ACLs in 10.3.4.2 section you wrote at point 2:
"Be very carefully. Many problems have been created by people who decided
that Everyone should be rejected but one particular group should have full
control. This is a catch-22

No KDC in requested realm (workgroup name)
Hello all,
this is with Samba 3.3.4 on FreeBSD, built locally from ports. The
server is joined to a Windows 2008 AD domain. I'm only using winbind,
because all I need are users and groups; this isn't a file server.
As far as I can tell, it is actually working fine; winbindd can get
all the required information from the DC.
The NetBIOS name of the domain is MYDOMAIN, the DNS name is

How to query for REALM or WORKGROUP before join?
Folks:
samba-common-3.5.8-75.fc13.x86_64
samba-winbind-clients-3.5.8-75.fc13.x86_64
samba-winbind-3.5.8-75.fc13.x86_64
samba-client-3.5.8-75.fc13.x86_64
If I try to join without setting the appropriate WORKGROUP I see:
Failed to join domain: Invalid configuration ("workgroup" set to
'WORKGROUP', should be 'FOOBAR') and configuration modification was not
requested

ADS Domain Member Workgroup vs Realm
I would say that workgroup = ZARTMAN should be right. Workgroups normally don't have dots in their name.
Than you should also try:
idmap config ZARTMAN:backend = ad
idmap config ZARTMAN:schema_mode = rfc2307
idmap config ZARTMAN:range = 10000-99999
One more thing is that it's not recommended to have a .local domain realm.
Have a look at this above glibc...

Add domain defauts to WORKGROUP if not specified
We currently are running smbclient 4.0.7. Users need to add domain name or "\" before username for authentication to succeed. Otherwise, smbclient prepends WORKGROUP\ to username.
In a particular environment, "WORKGROUP\username" does not have access to the user's home directory.
If we add "workgroup =" parameter in smb.conf file, it now passes. Is it valid to

ADS Domain Member Workgroup vs Realm
I'm working to setup Samba as a domain member to a Windows Server active
directory, and I keep hitting road blocks. There's some real terminology
hurdles in the wiki.
In a nutshell, my problem is this: I setup a Windows 2012 Essentials ADS
domain and I ended up with zartman.local for my "domain" in Windows. So,
I've got a dns zone in windows server that is domain.local

"home folder" v.s. regular drive mappings
Hey, has anyone on the list experienced the following behavior ?
When \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is specified as the "home
folder" in the AD user profile, XP takes a long time to open up "my
computer"
But when \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is mapped via a netlogon
script, XP opens "my computer" quickly
I've searched ms technet

3.0.1pre1 broke my 'valid users' on one share
Before updating to 3.0.1pre1, the following smb.conf worked.
Now when users try to hit the [broke] share they are denied access.
Winbind has no problem finding the users and groups for the domain.
I've verified filesystem permissions, "Domain Users" have full RW access.
I do not seeing anything coming across my smbd log files.

Unjoin Domain
Hello,
I would like to rename my w3k AD domain (I am fine with this process) -
one thing that worries me is how the samba 3.0.3pre2 Suse 9.0 server
will handle it. Should I delete the computer account from AD? Is there
an unjoin/rejoin domain procedure for samba?
For the domain name change to work, the AD needs to be in native mode,
can anyone see any problems with samba switching from mixed

Assigning cases to groupings based on the values of several variables
Dear R-ers,
my task is to simple: to assign cases to desired groupings based on the
combined values on 2 variables. I can think of 3 methods of doing it.
Method 1 seems to me pretty r-like, but it requires a lot of lines of code
- onerous.
Method 2 is a loop, so not very good - as it loops through all rows of
mydata.
Method 3 is a loop but loops through fewer lines, so it seems to me more
