How best to get ACL support?
My Dell server was preloaded with Redhat 7.2 , Linux 2.4.7-10, gccv2.96 with Ext3 file system.
I want to install the machine into my company W2k domain using winbind but my Linux kernel does not support the needed ACls. I
Does the latest Linux kernel come with ACL support and if so should I just update the kernel to 2.4.19 which I think is the latest production quality kernel?

Please, Help me.
Hello.
I have downloaded from the internet ftp site the samba's gz file and I have
installed the program on my Server (Sun SPARC Solaris).
I have done the following steps to install the program:
1. With the ROOT user, I have created the "/usr/local/samba" directory with
following permissions: drwxr-xr-x
2. I have put the "samba-2.2.1a-sparc-solaris-2.8.pkg[1].gz" file into

forcing XP clients to use CIFS
Hi Guys!
Anyone know how can I do this trick?
I guess there is a registry value for it. As I noticed winxp try to use
smbfs first not cifs. In linux it's easier because you can choose when
you mount your shares.

cifs samba mailing list
For two days now I've tried for two days now to get cifs working on a
redhat 9.0 2.4.20 based linux box. I followed the instructions given at
http://de.samba.org/samba/Linux_CIFS_client.html, i.e. compiling
cifs-0.6.8 and mount.cifs rev. 1.2.2.1. I successfully loaded the cifs.o
as a module and following the given examples I tried:
[root@r151-101 cifs]# /sbin/mount.cifs //raid/demo

Samba 2.2.5 and LDAP start_tls
Hi,
I've a problem in connecting samba 2.2.5 to LDAP with ldap ssl = start_tls.
I've already patched the file pdb_ldap.c and configure.in and run autconf (as
described in the Samba-LDAP-PDC howto).
However, doing a rpcclient servername -U root%password -c "enumprinters" shows
this in the log:

samba and very large files
I am seeing a problem that I am not sure how to fix and since I have
never had to use samba for anything major like this I am not sure where
to go. So, here is goes!
I have a few Gentoo systems that currently have a bunch of data on them.
I have been tasked with getting data from some Windows machines to the
Gentoo systems so that we can dump the Windows machines. So, the windows
machines are

CIFS and DFS
hello,
maybe this is the wrong place, but according to
http://us1.samba.org/samba/Linux_CIFS_client.html
linux kernel cifs should be able to handle M$ dfs shares. I looked at the
installation and usage instructions but it doesn't work. On the mount.cifs
manpage I found no hint about a special switch to activate dfs parsing.
Can anybody put some light into this?

Net ADS JOIN error
Hi all,
After having spend 2 days to resolve my problem to configure Samba 3.0 (the
path to the libgcc_s was wrong) I've finally installed it and I'm trying to
join the W2K AD domain with the command:
1. kinit admin@OUR.DOMAIN.ORG (asking password and getting the ticket from
the W2K)
2. net ads join -Uadmin@OUR.DOMAIN.ORG (doesn't work)

Small problem with XP client
Hi all,
got a small problem with a windows XP client when logging onto a 2.7 samba
server.
While the user can log on o.k., every time they do, notepad fires up and
opens desktop.ini for editing.
Can anyone suggest why and how to fix this.

Samba + OpenLDAP + ACL patch on Linux 2.4.18 problems.
Hi, all.
I compiled Samba 2.2.5 (on Linux) with these optinos:
--with-smbmount --with-acl-support --with-ldapsam
The compilation went fine and everything seems to be working except for
the ACL part.
I've applied the ACL patch for Linux 2.4.18 (from acl.bestbits.at) and
installed all the tools to go with it. That part works:
root@madrid# getfacl /tmp

CIFS Proxy Server
Does anyone have knowledge of any CIFS Proxy Servers or using Samba as a
Proxy to another CIFS/SMB Server? Are there any documents or resources
on this topic? I am trying to implement a general purpose CIFS Proxy
Server (the proxy server would implement some authentication and
authorization for the SMB requests) which can proxy CIFS servers like
Samba or Windows.

Active Directory - Which Samba version is needed?
Hi!
I'd like to setup a Samba server which should do user authentication
against an Active Directory. Our AD admins told me, that we do not have
Window NT 4.0 Domains available.
What I'm trying to accomplish, is that the users can login with the same
username/password they use with the AD. Also, if the password is
changed in the AD, this change should be reflected on the Samba server.

windows server 2003 shares (smbmount & signing or cifs & kerberos)
hello everyone,
the old problem persists :X I'm currently running Novell Linux Desktop
9 (SP2) featuring a 2.6.5series kernel. Smbclient (3.0.14a-0.4-SUSE)
seems to support signing negotiation.. at least the following command
works just fine:
smbclient -k -L //hostname
turning signing off manually (-S off) ends up in the common error
message cli_negprot: SMB signing is mandatory and we have

mounting samba shares on linux with non-ascii dirs
Hi!
I've just searching the list archives but cannot solve my problem with
mounting samba (v3.0) shares back on linux (RH 8.0 and 9).
Mounting on Win clients works fine and any filenames (including long
names with non-ascii chars and spaces) are perfictly supported and accessed.
Mounting the share back on (even the same) linux box is a complex task.
I use: mount -t smbfs -o guest

Samba and SMB Signing.
I have a question I hope one of you can help me with.
In what version did Samba begin to include support for SMB signing? It looks
like 3.0 but I need to be sure.
According to http://de.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/samba-3.0.0rc4.html
<http://de.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/samba-3.0.0rc4.html> on line 14 is
