Realm = or workgroup = ?
I think samba is cool.
I'm trying to understand the relationship between these 3 options:
Realm = MYGROUP.COM
Security = ADS
Workgroup = MYGROUP
And my samba file server is a member of AD
My server is W3K
Nothing seemed to work until I specified the realm
Do I also NEED the workgroup parameter ?
Shouldn't the workgroup and realm parameters exclusive from each other ?

Ads server = huh?
All,
I've installed a Redhat 9 system with all packages from 3 discs.
Now I've removed my samba 2 related packages and installed samba 3 using
rpm.
After setting up kerberos with my W2k system and testing that out
successfully
I set up smb.conf with security = ads etc
I've also set 'ads server' but this config option causes various samba
binaries to report

"home folder" v.s. regular drive mappings
Hey, has anyone on the list experienced the following behavior ?
When \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is specified as the "home
folder" in the AD user profile, XP takes a long time to open up "my
computer"
But when \\server\userhome <\\server\userhome> is mapped via a netlogon
script, XP opens "my computer" quickly
I've searched ms technet

3.0.1pre1 broke my 'valid users' on one share
Before updating to 3.0.1pre1, the following smb.conf worked.
Now when users try to hit the [broke] share they are denied access.
Winbind has no problem finding the users and groups for the domain.
I've verified filesystem permissions, "Domain Users" have full RW access.
I do not seeing anything coming across my smbd log files.

quotas: documentation? Properties?
System: samba 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.x
Starting point: PC's "Properties" window on a share of home directories;
diskspace Used/Free "pie-chart" and figures.
A colleague asked me yesterday whether this properties window could
display the diskspace information, using the user's UNIX quota rather than
the physical space on the disk.
Our environment has potentially 14,000

W2KSP2 Profile and 2.2.2 hell...
I recently got suckered into upgrading to SP2 by Microsoft's auto update
program.
Since this broke profiles I upgraded to 2.2.2.
In the process of upgrading I set up the Profiles share and tried to move my
profile into it.
Unfortunately W2K insisted on trying to log in with the profile still in my
home directory where nt acl support was not disabled. In an attempt to
coerce it into looking

I'm in ADSI hell...
Folks,
I am in the process of fighting my way through my first foray into ADSI
phones. I have a very nice Aastra 480 from Sayson, purchased through
Cylogistics. Very nice phone. However, my experience in configuring ADSI
has been pure pain so far, and it's not all working yet...
1) The locking mechanism for these ADSI phones is... baroque? Arcane?
Perhaps there is a reason why you would

1.2.1 "Silence suppression is disabled" what the hell?
I upgraded from 1.0.9 to 1.2.1.
In 1.0.9 everything worked perfect.
Now, I call in my IVR, and after navigating in menus when I get dialtone
for dialing extension, Sound is choppy and I get bunch of messagess:
-- Silence suppression is disabled (option_silence_suppression=0
chan->timingfd=30)
-- Silence suppression is disabled (option_silence_suppression=0

having hell of the time converting away from UW
I just want to check and make sure not missing anything.
I'm trying to convert a customer away from UW. unfortunately, all of
the mailboxes are in MBX format (my own mistake coming back to haunt me).
mailutil doesn't seem to do conversions properly. It keeps complaining
about an existing copy of /mbox and only if I say to -merge append will
the copy proceed.

To hell with OpenSuse, ditch it and go to Ubuntu
this blog entry
http://www.viggie.com/blog/software/opensuse-ubuntu-usage-experience
, if credible , would seem to suggest that there is no good reason to
choose Suse.
I really don't have time for such nonsense, maybe I'll just reinstall as Ubuntu.
Also, noticed that GCC was not installed when Suse installed. That's
just weird, GCC is part of Linux.
And if you try to install GCC,

nbp hell
Greetings,
I spent the better part of a day tracking down a rather annoying
problem. I would like someone more knowledgeable than myself to
confirm this diagnosis.
I have a RH 8.0 Linux box with three NICS. I had been developing it
testing with an XP box. Everything seemed groovy.
Today I went to put it into "production" and Win98 clients were
having all sorts of problems.

Damn itcl to hell.
Hi,
Sorry to bug people with this what must be a very trivial question. I've got
a Mandrake 8.0 installation and have been trying in vain to get CodeWeavers
Wine (preview #3) installed. I've downloaded and installed the 'blessed'
version of itcl from the CodeWeaver's website (itcl-8.3.2-7mdk.i586.rpm) and
am still getting the itcl not found error when I try to run winesetup.

features.conf / DTMF / automon hell
I have been trying for a very long time to get asterisk to detect and
utilize dtmf tones from my sip clients within my dial scripts. I have
set automon=>#9 in my features.conf, I have Dial(....,gWw) in my dial
scripts. I have Set(DYNAMIC_FEATURES=automon) as the first script in
my extension. I can see the dtmf tones on the wire as SIP INFO
packets. Using the Read() app I have verified that * is
