Ext3 vs. Reiser?
Hi!
I was just wondering how Ext3 and Reiserfs compare. When I reinstalled my
server (because of a stupid hacker) I took the opportunity to change to
ReiserFS. And I have to say it's really much faster than Ext3.
I don't have benchmarks, but for example, stuff like "make dep" on the linux
kernel is much faster (even though I had enabled write cache when I was
using ext3).

reiserfs
Hello All.
Is there a kernel module or something that can be yum'd on centos 4.4
to get rieserfs support? Trying to mount a raid device and getting:
mount: fs type reiserfs not supported by kernel
Thanks,
Thomas

Transaction ordering
Greetings.
If I issue the following sequence of pseudo-syscalls:
fd = open(temp_file, O_WRONLY)
write(fd)
rename(temp_file, dest_file)
fsync(fd)
close(fd)
(where dest_file is in a different directory)
Does ext3 order the commit such that the file write effectively happens
in the journal before the rename? That is, is there any chance that, if
a crash occurred, that the destination

Disabling compression in sshd causes problems
Greetings.
If compression is disabled in the sshd config file, and a client
attempts to connect with compression enabled, the session fails with the
following error message:
no matching comp found: client zlib server none
This error message is produced on line 285 of kex.c (version 3.4p1).
This happens with either UsePrivilegeSeperation on or off, so I do not
believe it is a PrivSep issue.

[LLVMdev] LLVM linkage flags
An enumeration for the kinds of linkage for global values.
Hi, I'm currently writing a compiler that takes llvm-ir input. I'm a little
confused by the following linkage flags:

You're probably using an old clang. There is an option
"-Wno-switch-bool" that turns this warning off, but if your clang does
not understand it, there may be no other

lib/util.c:smb_panic yp_get_default_domain Samba 3.0.2a
Samba Folks:
I'm having what seems like a relatively benign issue with Samba 3.0.2a.
I'm running SuSE 9.0 (with all updates) on an Athlon XP, 512MB RAM,
RieserFS on SATA hard drives. Linux kernel version 2.4.21-202-athlon
(from SuSE).
I can repeatedly and predictably get the following error in the log.smbd
file when connecting via Mac OS X. (smb://serverIP/) I get the same

What was wrong with this sequence?
I thought I understood things, but I guess not. I recently configured a new
system for a colleague as follows:
1. Redhat 7.1 install Dell Inspiron 8100 - three partitions on 30G - /,
/boot, swap
2. Boot up
3. configure, make, make install of linux-2.4.12-ac3 (with approriate lilo

Outlook .pst on a samba share; do or don't?
Hi listers.
People here are trying to push me into moving the Outlook .psts on a samba
share for back-up reasons. I'd like to hear your experience about this: is
it feasible in the size of 20 users with 400...800MB each .pst? Any special
settings on samba side? Something special that I should pay attention to? Or
is just "NO"?

Performance Increase Suggestions
Hello Everyone,
I have a few users that are complaining about the "slowness" of
copying files to and saving files directly to the Samba server. From my
own recollections, the speed is rather identical to the speed we
experienced on our old Windows NT 4.0 fileserver.
One thing that could be the impetus of this issue is that Samba
is serving up files, for opening and copying from the

FW: Outlook .pst on a samba share; do or don't?
I'm running a new (6 months old) fast server, with an ultra-scsi

elderly: some are 5 year old 350Mhz machines, and my users are
finding it faster to put their .pst files on their Samba-shared
Linux home directories. (50 users, .pst files from 100mb to 1.5Gb).
(yes, yes, I know, 1.5GB is WAY too big for a .pst file; its

Copying EAs and ACLs
Hello,
I am the guy behind the ext2/ext3 patches for Extended Attributes and ACLs,
and I've recently been asked about ACL support in rsync by Eric. Upon
investigating I found that you have an ACL patch against rsync-2.5.5 [1]. I
also found some other postings to rsync@lists.samba.org concerning rsync and
ACLs [3].
Are there any plans for finalizing an integrating that rsync ACL patch?

data=writeback option on root partition - RH 8.0
Well, I had the first use of the recovery mode on the RH 8.0 install CD
today on a dev system. I changed the mount option for the root
partition to data=writeback to see what all the claimed speed increases
are about, and the system failed to mount the partition r/w, so the
resulting boot failed.
After search usenet, it seems other RH folks have had this problem,

Blacklist IP after 2 failed PPTP connection attempts
I am running shorewall 1.4.8-1 on my firewall. I am also running poptop
on this firewall for remote VPN clients to connect to our local network.
I would like to set some options in pppd, so that after 2 failed user/pass
attempts are tried, the IP address is blacklisted, and an email is sent to
the admin of this IP address that has been blacklisted.
I know this may be more of a ppp question than
