SMB Signature problem against WIN2K3 server using samba3.0.0 release( Samba Developers Response requested)
There are many discussions about this problem, but none of the
developers of samba stepped in and gave any good explanation.
Is this solved in Samba3.0.0 official release? (In what's new section of
3.0.0rc4, the 14th point is win2k3 security settings related matter. Is
this the fix for SMB signature?)
In one of the discussions there is a mention of disabling security

Home share
Hiya,
I want to stop students from writing .bat .exe .com .jar etc files to their w drives but allow staff to do so. I have the normal homes share in the smb.conf file.
I decided to put the parameter include = /usr/local/samba/lib/%G_smb.conf
I have a staff_smb.conf and a students_smb.conf file.
In these files it has just the homes share in it. The only difference is in the students file it

samba-3.0.0 release won't authenticate
Hello,
This is the 3rd time I'm sending the message.
I've just upgraded from samba3-alpha23 to samba3.0.0 release. I'm
running samba with an LDAP backend and I used the convertSambaAccount
conversion script, and now the latest 3.0.0 ldap schema. The problem I
have is that no Windows user can authenticate against their home
directory, or any other machine. Authentication against the

MS Word unable to sense file opening by other users
Thank you for answering. I am testing Samba 3.0.1Pre1 on RH9 . MS Word 97 keeps opening already opened files without sending any warning as it would normally do when accessing W2K servers. Same program , same files behave differently with Samba and W2K. However, I found that Powerpoint is nevertheless able to sense correctly the situation by always giving such warnings - " test.ppt is

Hello everybody,
This is the scenario I have: I've joined a GNU/Linux machine to an Active Directory domain using winbind, and I've shared [homes], so now every user of the entire organization were I work can see a shared resource named like his/her username when they connect to that PC, but I don't want that, I just want the people from my department to see their homes (they are the

Re: kerberos/samba/solaris
Hi,
I found a solution that worked for me:
My kerberos installation wasn't in the $PATH though one should think the
binaries are recognized by using the --with-krb5=/path flag :-(
I simply exported my $PATH including the '/path/to/kerberos/bin' and
voila, everything is fine :-)
best regards

samba3: problem with machine accounts - change PC name
Hi,
Running samba 3.0.0, LDAP passdb.
I've in smb.conf (script is from samba3.0.0 source tree)
add machine script = /usr/local/sbin/smbldap-useradd.pl -w %u
delete user script = /usr/local/sbin/smbldap-userdel.pl %u
When a machine (win 2000/xp) is added once to samba domain on-the-fly.
Everything works well.
Things get tricky, when there's need to change machine name.
Samba doesn't

Smbmount with networked windows system backups
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to automate the backups at my office, and am running
into trouble with the windows machines. I have used the smbmount command to
mount the windows systems onto our RedHat Linux 6.0 box. I can verify that
they are indeed mounted successfully.
I have a copy of BRU, which is an excellent piece of backup software.
Ideally, I would like to use BRU to back up

VT built in?
Hi Xen team,
one short question before I grab the new machine of a colleague: did you
build Xen3 for Sid with VMX (virtualization with the newer
Vander...Pacifica)? Or will I have to build it myself?
Sorry for the direct mail to this list, but I'm not subscribed to
Debian-Users. Please CC me, as I'm also not subsribed here. Thx.
kind regards,
Wolfgang

Samba Bug?
Hi,
I've been trying to get in touch with someone to discuss a problem
with Samba that I've been experiencing. I can reproduce the bug
on the systems for which I am responsible, and am interested to
know whether it is a local problem or a genuine bug. (I have searched
the archives, updated to the latest Samba release and read the docs :)
I posted to this list and have had no replies -

Notification of file modification in subdirectories not working
Hi Volker
Thanks for reply.
managed to capture Samba logs 4.2.7 in debug 10
Subsribed to events on path /watchfolder recursively.
First notification is renaming a folder in a subfolder, path
/watchfolder/test/renamed - that works OK.
Second notification is on path /watchfolder/test/subfile.txt and editing
that in Notepad on another Windows 7 machine via UNC path
That does not show

Samba slow to Windows clients
Hi All,
I have just built a new P 4 1.8 RH8.0 Server rpmed up to Samba 2.2.7-2
It works GREAT for smbmounted shares on my linux boxes and sssllllooooowwww
on my Windows clients (2K and 98)
Specifically, moving a 15 Mb file over my 100 MBit network with one hub
takes
around 20 sec for the smbmounted share on a Linux box and 8 minutes on a
Win2K/98 box.
Any ideas?

Hi All,
I'm trying to migrate from an NT4 domain to samba-3...
sorry this is so long...
when I run the "net rpc vampire" I get errors for users and machines
in uppercase or contain uppercase chars.
I'm in a test env before I go live!
I'm on a gentoo distro w/ shadow.
useradd FOO errors, this might be the culprit...
I set up some dummy accts and made them members of

Increasing samba performance
Hi.
Between 2 linux (2.6.11 client and 2.6.14 server) machines connected by
a 100Mb link I get samba performance copying a file from the client to
the server through a smbmounted share of around 4.2MB/s
Is this to be expected? Or can it be improved (and if so, how?) I've
tried tweaking SO_(SND/RCV)BUF (after reading numerous articles on
samba performance...), but it doesn't seem to have

NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and smbmounted Win shares
Setting this dword to 1 in
HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Control/FileSystem is supposed to
suppress updates of a file's Access Time attribute when
browsing but even read-only accesses with NotePad or
plain copy leave no traces.
However, if you cp or cat (or for that matter tar) a
file on an smbmounted Win share, the Access Time is
updated regardless of the setting of
NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate.
