New Users wont authenticate.
Im using Samba 2.2.7a on my RH7.3 box. The 3 users I have had on the system
work flawlessly, but when I add a new user (userconf, adduser, smbpasswd
-a) the system takes the user, it exists in both PSSWD files, but won't
allow logging on from the Win9x box.
I look in /var/log/messages and it doesn't tell me anything, nor do my
etc/samba/log.smbd-nmbd files, is there a particular switch

Samba PDC/Windows BDC
I have a RH 7.2 PDC which uses DHCP for 2 machines on the network. My Win9x
machine as a client/BDC just in case and uses a static IP. If the PDC goes
down. I have to put in or take out the PDC's gateway IP and was wondering if
there was a way to get ONLY the info I need from DHCP to the Win machine. To
attempt to clarify, when the PDC is up, it will assign its gateway IP to
the BDC (since it

RE: Shorewall-users Digest, Vol 3, Issue 64
Did I just read completely past this or is this an undocumented feature?
Either way, thanks.
BTW for my first attempt at a Linux firewall, this proved to be a challenge,
but worth it. And most of the problems I''ve had are I/O (idiot operator)
errors. Keep up the good work.

Missing File
Sometimes an install errors out looking for a file called libc.so.6. I did a
locate and the file IS there, it just doesn't see it. I don't want to have
to download a 16 meg RPM just for one small file. Does anyone know where
JUST this file (most likely updated) can be found by itself?

Application Blocking
On my windows machine I use a software fire will called ZoneAlarm. One
feature I like Is the ability to block applications from using the net. I''ve
looked with Shorewall and wonder if it does, or was ever meant to. Not a
complaint, a curiosity.

Ghosting Linux Partitions.
I was thinking of putting a slightly bigger HD on my Linux server and would
like to know the easiest way.
I know that ghost works well on FAT32 partitions, but does it work on Ext3
partitions too?
Id rather not reinstall if I don't have to, so any and all suggestions are
appreciated.
TIA

RSpec-ers:
I''m aware this is quite the FAQ. I have probably asked it myself, but I just
can''t Google up anything but others asking it.
I grabbed the source to Beast, to use as a Rails project uninfluenced by me, or
RSpec. Then I installed the CURRENT version of RSpec and rspec_on_rails, and set
up a model spec on Post.

2.2.8a and printers
I recent upgraded to 2.2.8, which went fine. When I checked smbclient -L
firewall, I saw I Lost my printer share.
I am using CUPS v1.1.3 for printing. When I went back to 2.2.7a it
reappeared. 2 questions:
1> Why did it do this? I ./configured it --enable-cups- --with-pam_(smb)
2> Is there and advantage of upgrading such a small step? Or are there a big
enough issues to warrant this

Samba 2.2.8a Install
I just downloaded and installed the above tar ball, all went fine, all runs,
hits no errors (./configure, make, make install bin, make install_man).
When it finished, it typed, service smb stop, service smb restart, then
smbclient -L firewall, which still reported 2.2.7a.
So I tried it another way, /etc/rc.d/init.d/smbd stop/start...Smbclient -L
firewall yielded the same version number, ditto

re endcoding syntatx ices2?
G'day,
doing a spot of reencoding on my 64k ogg files, trying to create a
stream for those poor sods who are still on dial up. The syntax below
works - gives me a 28k stream. Seems like the bitrate has little
effect on the reencoding. Anyone know all the commands I can use -
still no documentation for this ver2 of ices and icecast hey?

[PATCH nbdkit 4/4] Add floppy plugin.
Create a virtual FAT-formatted floppy disk from a directory of files.
For example:
nbdkit floppy /path/to/directory
The implementation of this is quite different from nbdkit-iso-plugin
since we cannot use an external program. Instead this plugin
synthesizes the MBR partition and FAT32 structures that are required.
To do: Implement bootable virtual floppy using syslinux. This is not

These plugins have in common that they store either a list of
allocated strings or a list of constant strings. Define either
string_vector or const_string_vector as appropriate and use it to
store these lists.

Extend logging of openssh-server - e.g. plaintext password
Also, if password-based auth is not allowed, WTF would you want to log passwords?
This whole idea is ugly, and smacks of a teenage-level prank attempt.
I would strongly object against any such modification of the main source (though I'm sure the maintainers are sane enough to never let such a crap in).
Of course the original poster is free to hack his own copy in whatever way he wants.?

not seeing windows XP
Hello,
I've got two problems in my very small home network. 2 xp (pro) machines
and me, who is the printer server on ubuntu. I've read through the samba 3
by example and the earlier chapters of samba 3 howtos, but there are some
things I still don't seem to be understanding. One of my big issues is
that one of the xp computers is totally invisible to me. I can't call it

S4 - inheritance changed by order of setClassUnion and setAs()
Andreas,
As far as I can tell (/conjecture), this is because the list of classes a
particular class inherits from directly is appended to as needed, and so
the order that a class extends others isd refined by the order that those
connections are defined.
We can see this with two setClassUnion calls, rather than required setAs:
> setClass("grandma", slots = c(a =
