forcing XP clients to use CIFS
Hi Guys! Anyone know how can I do this trick? I guess there is a registry value for it. As I noticed winxp try to use smbfs first not cifs. In linux it's easier because you can choose when you mount your shares. Regards, Jax

CIFS Proxy Server
Does anyone have knowledge of any CIFS Proxy Servers or using Samba as a Proxy to another CIFS/SMB Server? Are there any documents or resources on this topic? I am trying to implement a general purpose CIFS Proxy Server (the proxy server would implement some authentication and authorization for the SMB requests) which can proxy CIFS servers like Samba or Windows. One particularly hard problem

windows server 2003 shares (smbmount & signing or cifs & kerberos)
hello everyone, the old problem persists :X I'm currently running Novell Linux Desktop 9 (SP2) featuring a 2.6.5series kernel. Smbclient (3.0.14a-0.4-SUSE) seems to support signing negotiation.. at least the following command works just fine: smbclient -k -L //hostname turning signing off manually (-S off) ends up in the common error message cli_negprot: SMB signing is mandatory and we have

smbmount deprecated - what about Windows 9x?
Hallo, I've just installed Kernel 2.6.25.2 - works fine. But now when I use "smbmount" for mounting shares from my Win9x clients the system (kernel) tells me smbfs is deprecated and will be removed from the 2.6.27 kernel. Please migrate to cifs. But at least Win9x seems not to like cifs. Mounting via smbfs works since years, mounting (with the same options) via cifs

Winbind: can't log in as domain user
Sorry about the lengthy post - I'm putting as much in here as I can in hopes that someone can help me ferret out the problem. Basic problem is that domain users can't successfully log into the linux box. I'm trying to set this box up as an ltsp server authenticating against our existing AD (although this is actually in a test lab - I didn't really want to trash anything real

Unix Extensions
I have a Samba 3 server, and a client with Samba 3. The server has a share for home directories, and the client is trying to mount it, but after it's mounted, I still can't create any symbolic links. Also, the GUI login (Red Hat Enterprise default) isn't working, but I think that's just a symptom of the symbolic and hard links not working. Any idea why, when I enable unix

"|dirname| in dfs path \boxname\dirname is not a dfs root" ?
Hi, It's looking to me like the error in the title is the main thing preventing logging into a share via ADS/winbind &c. I see an old note here for someone seeing the same in his error logs: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2007-May/053388.html Ah - this explains a lot. The default for the "msdfs root" parameter changed between 3.0.24 from True to False.

DFS enumeration on a Samba hosted DFS tree.
I've translated a Windows based DFS tree to a Samba based (3.0.23c) one and it seems to work quite well from Windows Explorer and cmd.exe. First off, I have a relatively big tree. grep dfscmd /root/dfs.cmd | wc -l 1614 One issue I've noticed that tree enumeration and manipulation from a Windows machine to a Samba based DFS root just doesn't work at all. For instance dfscmd.exe

Samba 4 and DFS replication
I realize that Samba 4 doesn't yet support DFS replication. But my question is if Samba 4 as an AD server supports DFS replication within the environment. For example, if all we have are Samba 4 servers for AD domain controllers, and we have 2+ Windows servers doing DFS between each other (where the Samba 4 file server isn't involved at all), is that supported?

dfs/dce and openssh
I searched google and did not find any hits on this being solved. I want to get ssh so I can the dsa/rsa style password it in an environment that uses dfs/dce authentication if that is possible (and it has not already been solved). In other words, I want to be able to log into a host as a dfs/dce user without typing my password. Before I dig into the code and trying to do this, I wanted

Help making Samba a DFS host (not root!)
I'm trying to create a DFS root in my 2003 AD domain, and point it to a share hosted on a Samba server. From the documentation, I had assumed that this was supported (msdfs host = yes ?). Am I missing something basic? This is with Samba 3.0.31 on RHEL 5. When I go to create the DFS root (via the msc plugin) and instruct it to use my samba machine as the host, I get this error: "The

Duplicating directory list: Samba, DFS, and XP
Samba 3.3.3 I've seen some relevant posts, but no answers. Users on XP32 boxes will see duplicating directories inside of each other when accessing a samba share through dfs. Not sure how to recreate, but it happens regularly. Problem does not occur when accessing share directly. Performance does not seem affected. A reboot of XP will resolve the issue. Thanks. djm

dfs & shadow copy services
hello configuration: windows XP client linux/samba dfs link to a share on a Netapp box. from the XP client you can't see the tab "Previous Versions" if you rightclick on a file. You can see this tab if you go directly to the Netapp share or if you use a dfs link on a Windows 2003 Server. Netapp is a Shadow Copy Services Provider but apparently the linux dfs cannot handle this.
