msdfs samba client - Linux CIFS Client
Hello,
my company recently changed the stucture of some shares (Win2000). Since
then, we are not able to access these shares from Linux/Solaris anymore.
I tried smbmount and smbclient and can access the top-level directory of
the share and see the directory structure, but I can't see any data inside
these directories.
A few days ago, someone told me that msdfs is used for the new structure

Problems with Windows 2003 connecting a Samba server
Hi list,
I am encountering a problem in connecting a Windows 2003 to a Samba
3.0.21b server. The Samba server is configured to have a security =
share option, so that no password is needed. I can connect to the
server by typing "net use z: \\192.168.51.1\data", and it is
successful. However, if I try to do "dir z:", no file found! Same
behaviour are found in Windows

smb service response times + OpenVPN
Recently I had the chance to look at smb service response times over OpenVPN
using Wireshark/TShark. Here are 2 samples. In both samples a Win XP Pro
machine is connecting to a server running samba-3.3.7 and openvpn-2.0.6_9 on
FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE.

Win2k oplocks and you
Hello list!
I've seen the threads in this months archives on oplock issues, so I
hope I am not hitting a sore spot by bringing it up again. The reason I
am beating on this is that I've got a testable, repeatable issue with
Win2K terminal server (SP2) running CorelDRAW 10 (patched to current)
against a Debian Woody box running Samba 2.2.3a-6 for Debian. Since I
can repeatedly test the

Folders with ~ (tilde) slow to save
running Version 3.6.23-14.el6_6
I'm having slow save times with folders names ~something.. ie.
/www/~bin/content.txt.
doing this via a windows share.. when I save file it has a moment
(few seconds) of hesitation.. then saves. When I do
/www/bin/content.txt. the file saves instantly.
Is there anywhere I can change a setting to fix this? or is this a
bug. I've looked in the logs

Permission problems after an NT4 -> Samba LDAP PDC migration
Hello,
I replaced an NT4 server by a Samba 3.0.14a ldap server following the
instructions in 'Samba by example'.
Everything works fine except for some files on a W2003 SP2 server:
- when the W2003 server uses the Linux PDC, from a WinXP client, some files are
not writable, and ACLs can be listed but not changed.
- when the NT4 server is up, the same files on the W2003 server can be

News from AIX
Hi,
News from the "AIX is different than the rest of the world" department...
AIX has something similar to setluid() on SCO, just that it uses text
strings (similar to setenv()) and calls it "usrinfo". I've appended
the man page below.
Under normal conditions, well-behaved applications use ttyname(),
logname() and getuid() get the relevant informations, but today

Problems with OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 on Solaris 8
Hi,
I'm not subscribed, so keep me in cc. And thanks for having mailing-list
open for posting.
I had a couple of problems with OpenSSH on Solaris 8/MU3 + recent patches.
1) When I tried to use scp from any other host, sshd on Solaris host
crashed with SIGSEGV. Here's the stack trace:
core 'core.sshd.7637' of 7637: ./sshd -d -d -d

Network access speed.
Good afternoon all,
I have a few questions, and just joined the list and plan on staying.
I had 2 Samba servers at work, both running apache, etc, that we develop on from work and at home over a vpn.
My vpn upload speed is 25K, and at one time windows 2000 could save a document in less than 4 seconds from across the vpn using textpad.
We recently downgraded our crappy 7.1 redhat versions to 6.2

Slow samba access from Mac OS X 10.2.6
Hi,
I'm running samba 2.2.3a-12.3 on Debian Linux (i686). The network is
100Mbit switched and I can ftp data off the server at 9Mb/sec. If I
use either the Finder GUI under Mac OS X or mount manually via
Terminal, and then try to copy a file I get less than 64k/sec! I don't
ever remember having much better speeds than this while using the
various versions of Mac OS X. Windows

'Apple' Samba 2.2.3a on OS X 10.2.6 -> Samba 2.2.8a upgrade
Right, well I've just downloaded the source tarball and compiled it all.
Turned of Apple samba from 'server settings' and fired up smbd and nmbd
by hand... With different log, lock and password directories to Apple
samba, btw...
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a root
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a john
So far so good. But

Compile R-1.7.0 on Mac OS 10.2.6
Hi,
I can't get R-1.7.0 to compile on my Mac. Can someone give me some
pointers?
The machine is an 800MHz iBook running OS 10.2.6. I have installed the
December 2002 Developers Tools and have installed g77, f2c and dlcompat
via fink. I've checked the versions of g77 and gcc and they're both
based on gcc version 3.1. I've got Apple's X11 (Beta 3). I've added

Friendly Reminder: Huge number of small files performance regression from 3.5.16 to 4.6.5 with identical smb.conf
Hello again, Jeremy and other Samba experts,
I'm sorry to be such a pain in your neck(s), but I still need your help
in looking for help trying to find out why SMB2/3.1.1 in Samba 4.6.5
performs so much worse than SMB/1.5 in Samba 3.6.15 in scenarios with a
huge number of small files.
As requested by Jeremy, I have done wireshark "pcapng" captures of the
four scenarios as

problem building dvi and pdf documentation on Darwin 10.2.6
I just installed R-1.7.0 on Darwin 6.6 (a.k.a. MacOS 10.2.6).
'make' and 'make check' run without any problems. 'make info'
builds with no complaints, but 'make dvi' and 'make pdf' fail.
I get refman.dvi and refman.pdf OK (with some warnings from
pdftex that some names are referenced that do not exist), but
R-FAQ.{dvi,pdf} fails as shown below. Attempts

Compiling R for OS X 10.2.6 (Darwin 6.6)
Our lab just picked up a G4 Powerbook (1 GHz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.2.6). None
of us have any experience with Macs but for various reasons we need to have
one around for development.
In any case, we've installed fink, all the Apple Developer Tools and the
Dec2002updater to gcc 3.3. We're now trying to compile R 1.7.1 without too
much success. First we had to get g77, which turned out to

RPC error logging in to PDC on Win-64
I've upgraded one of my client boxes to Windows 64 bit edition but now it cannot login to the Samba PDC, instead it gives a RPC error after entering the password. The Win32 boxes can still login fine.
I can get accounts without admin rights to login but those with the rights are given a message stating "The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
