WinXP duplicate computer name problem
I've setup Samba as a PDC and it's working fine. I have one windows xp
machine already joined in the domain and working ok.
But when i tried to add another WinXP machine to the domain, i got the
error: "Could not join domain because the computer name is duplicated on
the network". I don't think those were he exact words, but that's what
it meant. Now, there is NO other

Samba PDC + WinXP = problems fetching remote profiles
Hi, everybody!
I have 20 WinXP client machines and a sever running
Samba (first try was with 2.2.8, now it's 3.0.0rc1).
If it matters to someone (for statistics, fun or for
understanding the problem), i use Slackware 9.0 Linux,
kernel 2.4.20 on server (and clients are XPpro/SP1,
buld 2600 as far as i remember). I almost had no
problems configuring samba for browsing and fortunately

File Systems - Which one to use?
We are looking at implementing a Linux box running samba in the near
future with about 1TB of disk online. The purpose of this box will be
for basic file and printer sharing needs. I am doing research on the
different journaling file systems avaible in RH 7.3 and up (ext3,
reiserFS, and JFS) and was wondering if anyone has had any real world
experience with them (mostly reiserFS and JFS) and

big file server
Hi
I plan to set up a big file server, something like motherboard with 4 ide
ports and an additional 4 ide daughter card, a PIV proc and 512 or 1024 MB
ram, a 100 or 1000 MB NIC, with 6 or 7 200 GB ide HDDs in a sigle box. I
don't need lightning performance, just disk space. Of course this would be
served by some linux os and samba
questions (relative to samba configuration and behaviour) :

Old bug resurfacing?
I found this in the archives:
http://samba.cadcamlab.org/lists/samba/Feb2002/00318.html
It pertains pretty directly to the problem I'm seeing.
I first started having it with my 2.7 installed version
so I upgraded to 2.8. I'm still having the same problem.
Basically, I have a group of web developers that use
the linux/samba server for editing files for the site.
All the files are

Call for help with Samba Printing and WinNT
Hi [Samba]s
This is a call for some generous people to try out the process of
installation of a Samba printer on WinNT and WinNT Terminal Server
Edition. I am working through Kurt Pfeifle's HOWTO on Printing and CUPS
printing in Samba 3.0, and finding some issues with NT/TSE. It would be
good if we had some confirmation or otherwise of these problems so that
Kurt can update his HOWTO (this is

Samba vs. Windows : significant difference in timestamp handling ?
Hi there,
i still have a weird problem with Powerpoint an Excel files stored on a
Samba share.
Only read on if you
-use a samba share as MULTI-user file repository (no force_user etc.)
-where multiple, different users share files in common directories
-the modification time of a file is of any relevance to you.
(seems like lots of folks don?t bother access rights or keep their

Raidzone, reiserfs, huge files
I posted about 2 weeks ago about problems we were having copying files
larger than about 17.6GB from NT to Samba 2.2.8a-1 on a Raidzone 1.3TB
system. Since then we have done much investigation, together with the RZ
people. I wanted to briefly post the current situation, in hopes someone
may have some suggestions.
One of the most recent and enlightening things we tried was to hang a spare

Samba on ReiserFS
Dear Listmembers,
I try to work with samba (newest rpm for SuSE, 3.0.1.pre2, but that does not
matter, the effect was there in 2.2.7 and 2.2.8a too) on an sufficient armed
system (the system does not matter either, I have tried it on different
machines) using ReiserFS (version 3.6.4-12).
When accessing one share from one machine (i.e. copying two or more files at a
time to or from the share)

Samba performance question
Hi all,
I am running a samba server (2.0.3) in a small eth-based home network.
There is only one win client (NT workstation, Sp4).
The samba box ist set up with wins support enabled and the NT box?
wins server entry points to samba server. Everything works fine: no
error messages neither server nor client. The server shows up
immediately in the NT?s network neigborhood. Browsing is fast.

Full wNT/w2K ACL conformance
We are planning to replace a quite big domain running W2K with Samba ( at
the very least, the DC ).
Though i'd love to have the extra security capabilities of W2K ( Kerberos )
as a DC, Samba/NT4 as PDC/BDC with ldapsam will more than suffice for now.
The show-stopper right now is this: we need to be able to assign "real"
Full Control permissions: a user who has "Full

WinXP DFS problems, debugging with dfsutil.exe
Hello Johan,
I'm having the same problems with DFS and WinXP clients since I upgraded
to 2.2.8.
I tried to clear the cache on the client side with dfsutil.exe that
comes with the Win2000 SP2 but to no avail.
Can anyone else confirm this problem?
It's also strange that on the WinXP clients the version of the samba
server is still registered as a previous version (2.2.6 or 2.2.7).

I am unable to copy a file larger than 4GB to a samba fileserver!
My config:
- client is windows nt 4.0 sp 5 (I tried sp 6 without any change, I tried
w2k, too)
- server (now) is samba 3.0.6 on suse linux 9.0 kernel
2.4.21-99-default/I586
- share is on a reiserfs hardware-raid array with plenty of free space
(explorer correctly _shows_ >500 GB, mapped as ntfs drive)

NTFS backup question
Hi.
I know that this is the Samba list, however I searched the net and asked
the below question on MS mailing lists, but I didn't got any usefull info,
so:
Does anyone know of any free tool that can be used from WinXP command line
to backup files from NTFS 5 volumes paths (eg.
\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1) to a file on a diferent
disk or to a stream. The specific of my

No umlauts in filenames
My samba setup cannot handle files whose names contain german umlauts
(????).
The server is samba 2.2.8a-1 on Redhat 8.0 (from the binary RPM from the
samba site), the client is running WinXP Home Edition.
When I create a file whose filename contains umlauts on the samba share
from the WinXP machine, the filename is displayed with question marks
instead of the umlauts by ls on the linux machine,
